Crash Bandicoot N. Sane Trilogy gets new level, HDR support & faster loading in free update

Here we are just a year later, and Crash is back again! All of us at Vicarious Visions are so excited for the release of our brand-new Crash Bandicoot 3: Warped level, Future Tense, which will be available at no additional charge for PS4 players who own Crash Bandicoot N. Sane Trilogy.

We can’t wait to see your reactions to the new level and watch as you all try (and try, and try) to fully conquer the level, including the bonus area, death route, and of course the platinum relic. But before we talk more about Future Tense, let’s talk about what else PS4 players have to look forward to!

Stormy Ascent

For those of you who bought the game last year, you may or may not have picked up our first DLC level, Stormy Ascent. Stormy Ascent is now also available at no additional charge for all PS4 players; just head to the PlayStation Store and download it!

If you’re just now picking up the N. Sane Trilogy for the first time, Stormy Ascent is a notoriously difficult level that was cut during Naughty Dog’s original development of Crash Bandicoot. Last year, we rebuilt it and released it along with a brand-new bonus area for the level. If you’re a fan of hardcore challenges, you won’t want to miss it!

Crash Bandicoot Stormy Ascent

New game updates

Additionally, fans will notice some new updates to the game starting today. These include improved loading times, as PS4 fans will get to experience our exciting new Nitro loading technology! With this new loading behaviour, the game will start loading level content into memory predictively while you play, in addition to dynamically keeping the most frequently used asset in memory.

The result of these optimisations is that you should typically experience loading times nearly as fast as Crash can say “Woah!” I’m also happy to say that we are bringing HDR support to PS4 and PS4 Pro! If both your TV and console support it, HDR will automatically enable when you start the game.

Future Tense

And finally, most exciting of all we have Future Tense, the first ever brand-new level designed for the original Crash Bandicoot trilogy! We’ve built a difficult, dangerous level full of hidden areas to discover. If you haven’t unlocked all of Crash’s abilities in Warped, don’t worry – you’ll still be able to complete the level. But for the completionists and speed runners, you’re going to want to tackle this level with every ability you’ve got.

Future Tense combines the old with the new. While the focus was to design a brand-new level, we still wanted to give the hardcore Crash Bandicoot fans that are versed in development lore something they could recognize, so we paid homage to the Crash Bandicoot cut Waterfall level in a few ways.

The Waterfall level was based on ascending a giant waterfall in a dense jungle, using logs to launch you higher as you go. Future Tense has you ascending a giant skyscraper in an urban jungle, using elevators to take you to the next floor.

We’ve also added the iconic “Waterwheel” hazard from the cut level, and keen-eyed players may spot an area or two of the level that matches silhouettes from the Waterfall level.

Crash Bandicoot Future Tense

With today’s release of Future Tense, Stormy Ascent becoming available at no additional charge, and the PS4 updates, there are more reasons than ever to jump into the world of Crash Bandicoot! We look forward to seeing you there!

5 farming tips to get you started this weekend in Harvest Moon: Light of Hope for PS4

Hi everyone! My name is Tyrone Walcott, from Rising Star Games – it’s an honour to be here to talk about our latest game, Harvest Moon: Light of Hope Special Edition!

The Harvest Moon series celebrates its 20th anniversary in Europe this year, and Light of Hope is the first time a Harvest Moon game has appeared on a Sony system in nearly ten years – we’re super-excited to bring this latest title to a whole new audience!

Like all Harvest Moon titles, Light of Hope is a game designed to be enjoyed by both veterans and new players alike. It blends together classic gameplay from 20 years of Harvest Moon history while also packing in all the modern gameplay innovations you’d expect, making for a super-streamlined and smooth gameplay experience.

There is even two-player couch co-op available for the first time ever in the series, and the beautiful “retro plus” visual style will bathe fans in the fuzzy glow of nostalgia.

Harvest Moon: Light of Hope

That said, everyone can do with a bit of a helping hand sometimes, and our developer friends at Natsume have provided some starter advice to help you restore the lighthouse, rebuild the town and help your farm and the townsfolk thrive!

1. Best starter tool to upgrade

Harvest Moon: Light of Hope

The watering can is an essential item, you’ll be using it every day to water your crops, and the upgrades allow much greater splash coverage saving time for other things!

The hoe is a very useful item to focus on as well, because of the various kinds of ores required to repair houses and upgrading the hoe will also help locate the ladder much more easily to advance through the mine.

2. Best crop layout

Harvest Moon: Light of Hope

A three by three plot is a good option at the start, because that’s the maximum that can be sown and harvested in the same action.

Once you start making a bit of money you can play around with different layouts and even design your own patterns, picross-style on the ground!

3. Ladder trick

Harvest Moon: Light of Hope

The position of the ladder in the mines is completely random… except that we can tell you it will never appear in the bottom row touching the wall.

Upgrading the hoe means you can till a wider area to locate the ladder without losing so much stamina – be sure to take enough bread with you!

4. Festival tips

Harvest Moon: Light of Hope

Success in the Fishing and Cooking festivals hinges on your ability to dazzle the judges with your skill and discipline! For cooking, try to use the highest grade ingredients; for fishing definitely upgrade the rod and use fancy bait to lure the fish.

Once the lighthouse has been restored, higher quality produce can be purchased from the townsfolk too.

5. Saving the lighthouse is just the beginning

TITLE

Restoring the town is just the start of your adventure: take your time to nurture relationships with the townsfolk, woo bachelors and bachelorettes for potential marriage; play the Brainiac scientist and focus on creating wild mutations of crops; continue to expand your farm and enjoy the rewards of all your hard work!

Harvest Moon Light of Hope Special Edition is available now on PlayStation Store and in retail stores on 26th June. There’s also an exclusive Collector’s Edition for Europe that contains all of the exciting content of the Special Edition, plus the full Season Pass, a hot drinks mug, a tote bag and a selection of pin badges, all lavishly presented in a barn-shaped presentation case.

Thanks for reading, everyone! We hope you enjoy playing the game as much as we have enjoyed creating and publishing it.

Pick up Harvest Moon: Light of Hope before 7th July on PlayStation Store to get a 66% discount off its RRP.

Customise pets and befriend the four-legged undead in The Sims 4 Cat & Dogs expansion, out next month

Something new is coming to PlayStation 4, and you’re gonna need a lint roller! The Sims 4 Cats & Dogs Expansion Pack* will be available on PlayStation 4 beginning 31st July, 2018.

With this pack, you’ll get the Create-A-Pet tool, a new world, and as many cats and dogs as your Sims can handle. If you love pets, but want to create other kinds of animals, keep reading to find out how to hack The Sims 4 and do just that!

With the addition of Create-A-Pet in the The Sims 4, there are tons of ways to customise your dog or cat through their breed, colouring, and more.

The Sims 4

And to make matters more creative, you can experiment with the painting feature. Add a few spots here, a bright colour there, and you’ve got yourself a rainbow pup! Plus, get even more detailed with stencils that design more complicated patterns.

But where do different types of animals come in? Well, getting inventive with the paint tool can bring your vision to life. Make a kitty resemble a raccoon, make a puppy a panda, or get crazy with something out-of-this-world!

With this pack, you’ll add Brindleton Bay, the perfect stomping ground for Sims and pets alike.
But wait, there’s something else. Something. . . spooky.

The Sims 4

We’re really not even sure we should tell you, because it’s (actually not) that terrifying! If you find yourself in a dank, misty area near the lighthouse, you may stumble upon a pet cemetery. And after the sun goes down, ghost pets have been known to scour the grounds, looking for new Sim friends. So if you see one, approach with caution, say “hello,” and even adopt that furry friend. See, that wasn’t so scary!

If you’re looking for cute kitties and doggos, The Sims 4 Cats & Dogs Expansion Pack has you covered. And if you’re looking for something more unique, it’s got that, too! Paint a pup, create a kitty, adopt a ghost pet, and much more.

Pre-order The Sims 4 Cats & Dogs today!

Fish, farm, decorate and more in chilled out town sim Castaway Paradise, out 31st July on PS4

How many of you are big fans of Animal Crossing? We certainly are, so much so that it inspired us to make our own game. Our fresh take on the concept is Castaway Paradise, coming to PS4 31st July!

The story is simple: you’ve been caught up in a storm, and now find yourself washed up on the shores of a quiet island in the middle of the ocean. You’re covered in seaweed when you wake up to see a friendly stranger looking down at you. This time, being shipwrecked might just be a stroke of luck!

Castaway Paradise Screenshot

Your new island home is full of quirky characters and things to do. The goal… is to do what you want! The villagers are happy to offer guidance and jobs, but nothing is mandatory. If you want to spend your days hunting for the biggest or most colorful bugs, go for it. Whether you’re farming, fishing, or taking jobs, you can be earning cash by selling things you find. Even a relaxing walk along the beach can be profitable if you take the time to collect some of the bits and pieces which have washed up.

Castaway Paradise Screenshot

So what can you buy with your earnings? There is a huge range of items, furniture, and clothing to collect. We’ve taken inspiration from events, cultures, and styles from around the world. Whether you want to show your love of soccer, hold a traditional Chinese tea party, or even turn a room of your house into a hospital ward, you have freedom to mix and match.

What you see in these screenshots is just a tiny taster of all the content in the game. The same goes for clothing. Dress up for holidays like Christmas or Halloween, put together a stylish party outfit, or wear horribly clashing colors! You can do whatever you feel like each day.

Castaway Paradise Screenshot

Naturally, the island’s other inhabitants will celebrate holidays with you, and you can get to know them as you help with fixing up the island after the big storm. There’s no need to rush around meeting everyone at once – just take your time. You’ll have plenty of opportunity to get to know your way around as the seasons change.

If you’re an outdoorsy type, we’ve got fishing, gardening, farming and bug-catching. If you prefer more artistic pursuits, we’ve got interior design, dressing up, and the chance to shape the island into your perfect tropical getaway.

In Castaway Paradise, the world is your oyster. This is a holiday that never needs to end! With so many things to do and so many customisation options, you could spend a lifetime trying out different clothes and redecorating your home. We’ve made so much content for the game that sometimes even we get surprised by something for sale.

Castaway Paradise Screenshot

If an island holiday sounds appealing, make sure to mark the release date in your calendar: 31st July! Why not treat yourself to some time in the sun? We’d certainly recommend it!

Your PlayStation Plus games for July are Absolver and Heavy Rain

Phew! Well, that was one heck of an E3. Not only did we get to show off a whole raft of awesome exclusives, we also kick-started our massive Summer of Plus campaign, which will be bringing exclusive benefits to PS Plus members all throughout the summer.

During our E3 Showcase we announced Call of Duty: Black Ops III would be joining PS Plus as a special bonus title, available to download until 11th July (you can grab it here) and we’ll have more exclusive discounts and extras in the weeks and months ahead. Stay tuned for all that and more, or head over to PlayStation.com for all the latest offers.

Just like always, we’ve also got our monthly line-up of games and wouldn’t you know it, it’s that time of the month again. The following are available for download from 3rd July:

Absolver

Dust off your knuckles, it’s time to get your hands dirty. Part RPG, part fighting game, part shared-world online brawler, Absolver stands alone as something a little bit different.

What’s really special is how well it all meshes: playing either PVE or PVP you’ll set out into the lost empire of Adal as a humble prospect and build your own combat style as you progress, picking up weapons, meeting new combatants to hone your skills against or befriending fellow travellers to spar with, trade secrets and impart fighting wisdom.

If you’re looking for a unique online experience to play with or against friends and enjoy mastering deep gameplay mechanics, Absolver is the perfect thing for you.

Heavy Rain

TITLE

Hot on the heels of the hugely successful Detroit: Become Human we’re keeping the Quantic Dream train rolling throughout July by revisiting its break-out PS3 exclusive Heavy Rain.

Set in a rain-soaked recreation of Philadelphia, you’ll follow the trail of a mysterious serial murderer known as the ‘Origami Killer’, through the actions of four main characters, each connected somehow to the criminal.

You’ll be challenged to make tough decisions and search for clues that will help track down the killer and save a missing child.

A deep, atmospheric narrative-driven gameplay experience, Heavy Rain established the branching story-telling approach which has become Quantic Dream’s signature. Remastered now for PS4, the game looks and plays better than ever. If you love a slow-burning crime drama, or have only recently discovered the studio’s work, then you’re in for a treat.

Anything else?

We’re topping off those two titles with a pair of games each for PS3 and PS Vita leaving July’s final line-up looking like this:

Not only this, as mentioned above Call of Duty: Black Ops III, is also available from now until 11th July as part of the monthly games line-up, so grab it while you can.

July’s regular line-up will be available to download on PlayStation Store from 3rd July. That leaves you with a few days to grab any games you might have missed from June:

How upcoming super-slick PS4 card battler Insane Robots favours fun over deck-building busywork

Insane Robots is a unique card battler with intense multiplayer battles, a huge one-player campaign, randomly generated battle arenas, and a unique cast of beautifully illustrated robots. With all of that added, we took away two big things normally associated with the genre that some players hate: time-consuming deck building and expensive card collecting. This enabled us to make something really special.

And we are super pumped to announce that the game will be coming to PlayStation on 10th July.

A long time ago…

TITLE

Although the game comes out this summer we started work on it in 2013 when we built the core of the battle system using some old business cards. The Playniac team then took the game on tour, playing it with friends, family and strangers, at festivals and events, around the world. All the time we worked on the gameplay, mainly the battle system, making it more and more fun to play.

With the raw material being just cards, it was quick and easy to add in new elements and develop existing ones. By 2015 we were ready to enter the digital realm, confident that we had a core game that was a lot of fun to play.

Pulling no punches

TITLE

The Insane Robots battle system is super easy to grasp. Each robot has two main circuits, attack and defence, and these circuits must be powered up with tokens for them to work. As well as your own circuits you are able to be sneaky and attack the enemy robot’s circuits using hacks or glitches, to make them malfunction.

All Insane Robots can all be augmented to give them additional skills. In multiplayer these 100+ augments are randomised before battle to deliver an ever-changing experience. In the one-player campaign these can be discovered and equipped to give you the best chance of defeating the increasingly difficult robot opponents.

Less admin, more fun

TITLE

So, all the elements of card battles are there, but the way that Insane Robots introduces and employs them is super-slick. And we wanted to go even further in our quest to make the genre more accessible: we removed the need to spend ages building and editing decks before going into battle, and we won’t be releasing huge collections of confusing and costly add on card packs after launch either.

We feel it isn’t necessary and helps us shift the focus away from boring ‘admin’ to enable players to get right to heart of the fun battles. This also means that players who don’t want to buy extra cards won’t be left behind.

Ready one player

TITLE

One of the big elements we added in the transition to digital was the 16+ hour single player campaign.

In this you explore a hex-based map and battle in tournaments that take place in procedurally generated arenas. As you traverse the map you have to avoid environmental hazards like the acid cloud or the ring of death, as well as other robots.

Or, you can chase enemy robots around the map and challenge them to a duel to the death! This is where strategy comes into play, with a ‘rogue-lite’ system which means you can lose everything you’ve collected, but only in that tournament – we’re not that cruel!

TITLE

The single player campaign is driven by a huge story, where users are given multiple choices as they voyage through the five sprawling environments. Each decision plunges you deeper into the world of Insane Robots and leads to a seminal showdown that will put all your battle skills to the test.

The game is available to pre-order today on the PlayStation Store with a limited time discount for PlayStation Plus members.

Everything you need to know about World of Tanks: Mercenaries, out today on PS4

Prepare to roll out and fight for fortune, Commanders! World of Tanks: Mercenaries, the next and biggest evolution of the global tanking phenomenon, is free to download from 26th June.

Set against the backdrop of a war without end, it’s time to fight for yourself and be your own hero. Mercenaries shakes up the classic World of Tanks formula with a host of new vehicles to use, maps to explore, stories to tell, and game features to dive into.

This is the perfect time for new players to check out World of Tanks: Mercenaries on PlayStation 4, and if you’ve never played World of Tanks before, here are a handful of things you need to know to get you started on your career as a soldier of fortune in the world of Mercenaries.

Enter the Mercenary nation

TITLE TITLETITLE

Guns for hire are fighting for themselves in a world governed by lawlessness, which has given rise to the new Mercenary nation. Joining the game’s nine existing nations, including the UK, Japan, and France, vehicles from the new Mercenary nation are available to fight in multiplayer battles alongside history’s finest war machines.

Take the reins on new Mercenary vehicles

Mercenaries scour the world for parts and weapons to use to survive. The new vehicles in World of Tanks: Mercenaries are brought to life using parts scavenged from tanks from other nations – some tanks are made up of several different vehicles from a host of different nations! The result is an armada of unique, combat-ready vehicles that would strike fear into the hearts of even the most seasoned tank commanders.

TITLETITLE

Earn Mercenary vehicles with the contract system

Traditionally, new vehicles must be purchased using XP and Silver earned from battles. The contract system is brand-new to World of Tanks: Mercenaries, and lets you take on missions to put together a new Mercenary vehicle. If you don’t fancy the grind, the contracts can be bought out for Gold – but the fun is most definitely in the thrill of the hunt!

TITLE TITLETITLE

Battle with powerful new crews and commanders

Each Mercenary vehicle comes with a fully trained Elite Crew, consisting of incredibly powerful and skilled soldiers who are more than prepared to take on dangerous missions and deadly skirmishes.

The first five Mercenary Crews introduced with the new tanks can be seen in our launch trailer for Mercenaries, from the erratic Crazy Snake to the furious Fallen Knight, and the bombastic Storm Hunter!

Discover a new world

In World of Tanks: Mercenaries, World War II dragged on for so long it reshaped the entire world. You can explore the new landscape that serves as the backdrop of the Mercenaries universe, shaped and ravaged by years of war, in a series of new and revamped battlegrounds to fight on in Multiplayer.

Fan-favourite maps have been completely changed to fit in with the new world, with the lush Liberty Falls and a war-torn Himmelsdorf available to fight in with or against players around the world.

TITLETITLE

Steal from a coalition of chaos in War Stories: The Heist

A brand-new War Stories campaign serves as the entry point to the Mercenaries universe. In ‘The Heist’ you can embark on an action-packed mission full of espionage, nuclear tensions, and epic tank battles.

The story-exclusive Trinity tank, helmed by a motley crew of Mercenaries, is your vehicle as you take on a dangerous assignment. When a shadowy agent with atomic ambitions tasks our ‘heroes’ with stealing nuclear material, they soon find themselves at the mercy of an unprecedented partnership between the United States and the Soviet Union.

It’s an explosive, dangerous, and totally awesome way to get acquainted with the new world!

Watch Dreams’ in-house band, The Molecules, perform live at E3

E3 2018 was amazing for the team at Media Molecule. We were able to give press the chance to go hands-on with Dreams, build a mini-story along with other developers and community (all hail the Mega-Penguin!) and demo Dreams live on a giant stage at the Sony Booth. And when you watched the Sony Press Briefing you may have seen the clips of Dreams spliced in and thought “Everyone loves a guitar playing banana but what does it all mean?!”.

Well, the jig is up… err… the gig is up? Following the briefing, our in-house (in-game?) band The Molecules played a 15 minute set, performed entirely in Dreams, for those attending the after show party. And now, you can see it too!

Performing a live gig using Dreams has been something we’ve wanted to do forever, so seeing it actually happen has been a, dare we say it, ‘dream’ come true. But, how did we do it? Well, we’re planning to show everyone what went into bringing this concert to life during our June Dreams livestream.

Please join our awesome performers and creators (the human ones… mostly) when we get the band back together on Friday 29th June at 5.00pm BST/6.00pm CEST live on our Twitch channel. And in the meantime, please enjoy the first ever live appearance by The Molecules!

Satirical PS VR puzzler Salary Man Escape launches today – find out how it was made

Hi everyone! I’m Michael Ren, Senior Producer on Salary Man Escape, and I speak for the whole team when I say we’re ecstatic to be finally launching the game!

It’s been a long year of development, and there were certainly bumpy roads, but ultimately everyone’s put their heart into the project and are proud of what they’ve accomplished. We hope now that our to-be players will have as much fun (and frustration :P) playing Salary Man Escape as we did making it!

Salary Man

Dear employee,

Thank you for cancelling your vacation. As a token of gratitude, here is a postcard of the sites you were scheduled to visit. We are also throwing in a nice video we shot during the last off-site management meeting.

Please don’t watch it during work hours.

Yours truly,

The Management

Developed by the team here at Red Accent Studios, Salary Man Escape is a satirical and edgy physics puzzle game for PlayStation VR where the player must use skill and make tactical decisions to help a disgruntled salaryman escape his life.

Through clever interaction and manipulation of blocks and platforms, players must reorganise an edifice of bricks in order to create a route for the salaryman to reach the exit.

Inspirations & beginnings

Salary Man

We started out with the idea of grabbing things in VR, with special attention paid towards the depth and volume of the 3D space. With this as a basis, our Lead Designer Michael Michael worked on a prototype puzzle game, which we were instantly attached to.

With the theme and graphics, we tried many different concepts that matched the gameplay. Some concepts were having a tiny robot escape a mechanical city, a little spider escaping a furious human, and ’80s electronics gadgets running away from being “retired”.

There was something to love in all these concepts, but ultimately none stood out enough. Then one day, the Lead Artist Yu Jian Wei casually compared the difficulty of the game to the daily grind of a salary man, and that image of a suffering worker just stuck with us. We created some early concepts, and the rest was history.

Designing the puzzles

Salary Man

Our Lead Designer Michael takes a somewhat unorthodox approach to the creation of the levels featured in Salary Man Escape. Instead of thinking of the puzzles as singular entities and designing them individually, he tackles level design by the chapter (up to 13 levels per chapter).

Using the new mechanics each chapter introduces as a design focal point, he starts out by giving players a smooth on-ramp with simple tutorial levels, acclimatizing them for what’s to come.

When players reach the middle levels, they will experience increasingly complex iterations of the same mechanic, as well as mixed levels that incorporate previous mechanics. These provide a satisfying challenge, but shouldn’t stump anyone completely.

It’s the final few levels of each chapter where the difficulty starts to spike, and where Michael really gets to flex his creative muscle. Players will encounter ridiculous puzzles that will boggle all but the most apt puzzlers.

If a player manages to survive all the normal levels and still wants more challenge, then there are the hidden levels. There isn’t much to be said about these except: “One does not simply beat the hidden levels in Salary Man Escape”.

Thus with this design, players will be met with a recurring cycle of “easy at the start, fiendish at the end” as they attempt to progress through the entire game.

In a twisted but poetic way, the ups and downs one experiences during their time with Salary Man Escape perfectly mirrors the same daily ups and downs of our suffering central protagonist – the salary man himself.

Key features:

  • Unique VR perspective: With the freedom of movement in VR, players are provided a perfect 360 degree perspective of the puzzle, which allows for a special 3D puzzling experience
  • Physics-dependent puzzling: Solving puzzles in Salary Man Escape is all about leveraging physics properties like weight, balance and force. Each individual playthrough will never behave exactly the same, and so players must expend their creative energies to discover the best solution to a problem.
  • Edgy art style, ’80s Japanese soundtrack: The game features a minimalistic, monochromatic visual style, contrasted with a cheerful, classic ’80s Japanese soundtrack, to evoke and symbolize the bleak, yet often humorous existence that is the ‘salary Man’.
  • Six chapters, 78 levels: The game features hours of gameplay, with six chapters, 60 basic levels, and 18 PS4-exclusive hidden levels. Each chapter introduces a brand new puzzle mechanic to the mix, making puzzle progression increasingly more complex and difficult.
  • Unlock hidden levels and achievements: Unlock hidden levels (which feature special mechanics) by collecting the coins scattered throughout the previous levels, often in off-path locations. Complete all levels to earn special achievements and bragging rights.
