New Call of Duty: Black Ops III campaign trailer exposes a bleak future

Hello PlayStation Nation! All of us here at Treyarch Studios want to thank everyone that participated in the Call of Duty: Black Ops 3 Multiplayer Beta last month. Thank you to all the PlayStation 4 players who were among the first to play the Beta. The data that we received has been invaluable as we make our final preparations for the November launch.

As excited as we are about Multiplayer, we’re also working hard on Zombies and Campaign too. In fact, it’s been some time since we last spoke about the Campaign in Black Ops III on PlayStation 4*. Without a doubt, this story is the most ambitious that we’ve ever undertaken.

Black Ops III engrosses players in a dark and gritty future, where a new breed of Black Ops soldier has emerged, and the lines between humanity and military technology have been blurred. You must navigate the hot spots of a new Cold War to find your missing brothers. While much has changed, one thing remains the same: everything you know may be wrong. How far down the rabbit hole are you willing to go to uncover the disturbing truth?

To help show you what we mean, we wanted to give you a look at what’s in store for you coming this November. Check out the trailer above.

The Black Ops III campaign opens up possibilities never before seen in the franchise. Customize your character and join with up to four friends for furious online co-op action. With larger environments, overhauled AI, and full progression systems, we’ve designed the campaign to be a re-playable and evolving experience.

Stay tuned for more information on the various campaign systems and features starting next week.

Call of Duty: Black Ops III is set to release on November 6th. Those that pre-ordered the game on PS4 will receive the NUK3TOWN Bonus Map at launch. The fan favorite multiplayer map comes to Black Ops III in a big way, re-imagined and re-designed from the ground up to highlight the new momentum-based, chained-movement system.

There’s still a lot of exciting stuff to share between now and November. We’ll be sure to check in with you all soon!

*Call of Duty: Black Ops III campaign mode will be available on next-gen platforms only, including PS4.

PlayStation Plus in October: Broken Age, Super Meat Boy, Unmechanical, more

The summer is over and the nights are drawing in but on the bright side that means we can spend more time losing ourselves in the world of videogames, with a fresh batch of PlayStation Plus games on their way to your system of choice.

Take note that as of the 6th October we will be removing Driveclub PS Plus Edition from the Monthly Games catalogue so if you haven’t had a chance to download it yet make sure your grab it before it disappears.

Without further ado, here are the games coming your way on 6th October:

Broken Age

The first graphic adventure by Grim Fandango creator Tim Schafer in 16 years, featuring beautifully hand-painted 2D worlds and an all-star vocal cast, including Elijah Wood, and Jennifer Hale.

Broken Age is a timeless coming-of-age story that follows, Vella Tartine and Shay Volta – two teenagers in strangely similar situations, but radically different worlds. You can freely switch between the characters and their individual stories, helping them take control of their own lives, and dealing with the unexpected adventures that follow.

Super Meat Boy

Team Meat’s fiendishly brilliant twitch platformer puts you in the shoes of Meat Boy, a red, cube-shaped character, as he attempts to rescue his girlfriend, Bandage Girl, from the game’s antagonist Dr. Fetus.

Across more than 300 levels, you must attempt to reach the end of each level, while avoiding crumbling blocks, deadly saw blades, and various other fatal obstacles. The core gameplay requires fine control and split-second timing – prepare yourself for a true test of your gaming skills!

Unmechanical Extended

Set in a fantastic world of flesh, rock and steel, Unmechanical follows a lone robot trapped in an underground complex. A handsome adventure game that combines tricky puzzle-solving, alluring exploration and engrossing atmosphere, it’s easy to pick up and play, but the challenges will truly test your logic, memory and wits.

Also joining PS Plus this month is light-hearted co-op platformer Chariot (PS3 only), wacky side-scroller Kung Fu Rabbit (PS Vita and PS3), and rhythm-based martial arts fighter Kickbeat (PS Vita and PS3).

Leaving PS Plus on 6th October

Don’t miss out! Make sure add any of the games scheduled to leave the service to your download list now to ensure you get to play them.

Not a PlayStation Plus member? Then join today from just £5.49/€6.99 per month. To find out more, visit our PlayStation Plus site

Remember, if you’ve not got access to your PS4, PS3 or PS Vita then you can also buy through our online store

Uncharted: The Nathan Drake Collection demo available today

Last week you voted for your favourite Uncharted Moments and the votes are in! There was a close tie between the Train Wreck from Uncharted 2 and the Cargo Plane from Uncharted 3, but there could only be one winner, right? The Train Wreck! The very opening minutes of Uncharted 2 grab you pretty instantly and — for a lot of people — never let go.

E3_2015_Mediakit_018

We’ll be playing it live today and talking to the team about what it actually took to pull this epic moment off (Hint: it wasn’t easy). Tune in on the Naughty Dog Twitch channel and sound off in the chat, or share your favourite Uncharted Moments in the forums.

Watch live video from NaughtyDog on www.twitch.tv

With less than two weeks until Uncharted: The Nathan Drake Collection launches on 7th October (9th October in the UK), we’re happy to announce that the demo will go live on PlayStation Store today! Even if you’ve battled through war-ridden Nepal a hundred times, playing it with enhanced graphics and gameplay on PS4 is like playing it fresh. Don’t believe us? Download it.

E3_2015_Mediakit_018

Be sure to download the demo from PlayStation Store today and mark your calendars for the third Uncharted Moments stream on 6th October. Don’t forget to grab your copy of Uncharted: The Nathan Drake Collection so you can join the exclusive Uncharted 4 multiplayer beta, available 4th December through the 13th! PS4 toddler horror Among the Sleep has a release date

Hi, everyone! My name is Kristina and I work at Krillbite Studio. We’re a small game developer from Norway. We are so happy to announce that Among the Sleep is coming to PlayStation 4 on 10th December!

This game isn’t for babies

We have received a lot of attention for the story in our game. Among the Sleep is a psychological horror game where you play as a two year old child. You get to experience the world through the eyes of a toddler with a vivid imagination that could easily scare your pants off. We wanted to create an atmospheric horror game with an eerie feeling of helplessness.

We have ported Among the Sleep from PC and it’s taken a while. Wonder why? It was caused by several reasons and the simple way to explain it is that there was a lot of technical work. If you are curious I’ll give you a short explanation!

E3_2015_Mediakit_018

Full visual upgrade

The porting required a conversion of our game engine, Unity. This project has been moved from Unity 3.0, to 3.5 and so forth all the way up to the most recent version 5.2. We wanted the game to look the best and work perfectly with the PlayStation 4 hardware. We had to redo the lightmapped levels and we had to rebake everything, which is fancy developer speak for fixing lights and putting it all together.

Another time-consuming issue with conversion were related to the physics engine used in the game. Unity uses Nvidia PhysX which has been completely redone in the newer versions of Unity. We encountered a lot of weird and funny bugs because of this. We saw chairs floating and doing 360s as you grabbed them, and apples flying hundreds of kilometres an hour. Among the Sleep was actually quite fun with fruit flying around randomly, but it sort of broke the atmosphere so we made the apples go back to their fruitbowl.

One of the coolest things in the PlayStation version of the game is the full audio-visual upgrade – Among the Sleep now has even better graphics and an even better sound experience. We think frame rate is an essential part of a good game experience and have worked hard to get the game to run at a proper 60 frames per second. This was probably the biggest part of the upgrade and it makes for a super smooth experience and does a lot for immersion!

E3_2015_Mediakit_018

Super excited for release

We are a young studio and we started making this game in school. We made a lot of strange stuff and code at the beginning of the project that has been coming back to bite us in our behinds during the porting process! But we have also learned so much that will help us make our next game development experience much smoother!

We are so proud of the PlayStation 4 version of the game and can’t wait for you to get your hands on it! You guys will be one of the first to be able to experience the commentary edition! The PC community have given us so much love for this horror game and we hope you will enjoy this even more polished version of the game this Christmas!

Hi everyone! When we announced our new title recently, we mentioned that we were going to be running a beta in the near future. Well, I’m pleased to announce that the Hardware: Rivals beta will be launching exclusively to PS Plus subscribers worldwide tomorrow, 30th September.

HWRblog2mash

In case you missed our previous post, Hardware: Rivals is an arcade-style vehicle combat game where you can get behind the wheel of a Tank or Fast Attack Vehicle, load up with devastating weapons and hunt down and destroy your opponents. Check out the trailer to get an idea of what you can expect in the beta.

Anyone with an active PlayStation Plus subscription is eligible to take part, and you can download the game from the PlayStation Plus section on the PlayStation Store.

During the beta we’ll be letting in batches of players on a first-come-first-served basis. When you launch the game, you’ll automatically be granted a beta key if one is available, and can start playing right away.

Everyone who gets a beta key in-game will also able to invite a friend to join them, so think carefully about who you want backing you up!

Finally, anyone who participated in our closed beta already has a beta key waiting for them as a little thank you so come and check out what’s new.

E3_2015_Mediakit_018

The game is still deep in development so your participation and feedback is incredibly important to us. We have a dedicated beta forum where you can learn more about the game, leave feedback and get the latest updates from the dev team. The original PlayStation launched in Europe 20 years ago today

Hello PlayStation Blog! Today we are celebrating 20 years to the day since the launch of the original PlayStation in Europe. Duly, this means there is plenty of reminiscing (and cake!) here in the office this morning!

20th Cake_celebrations_sm

If you didn’t manage to get your hands on one, then here’s another (albeit final!) chance to do so. We have created a super gaming quiz to test your knowledge of the past 20 years of PlayStation gaming. We have 20 PS4 20th Anniversary Editions to give away, with runners-up claiming a Dulashock 4 20th Anniversary Controller.

Enter here and, as always, please read the terms and conditions. Good luck!

And that’s not all that’s happening today.

We’ve created a special PlayStation Music playlist of our favourite gaming tracks from the past 20 years, with 21 tracks from 1995 to 2015. From Chemical Brothers’ Chemical Beats featured in future-racing classic WipeOut, to LittleBigPlanet’s The Orb of Dreamers, there should be something for everyone.

Click on the album cover below for a quick link to the playlist via the web player, or alternatively check it out via Spotify on PlayStation Music through your PS4.

20 Years of Play Playlist

Over on the PlayStation Forums, have your say on the games you think defined each generation. Head over there now to complete the survey. The results will be posted next month.

Speaking of lively debate, which is your favourite PlayStation character? Here are 20 of our top picks. The first PlayStation game I owned was Speed Freaks, I still lovingly remember Tabatha and her temper tantrums!

20th Anniversary Character Montage

Finally, let’s take a look back at where it all began with the original PlayStation console. We’d love to hear your favourite memories – please do comment below!

Thanks for all of your support over the past 20 years – here’s to many more!

PS4’s 3.00 system software, codename: Kenshin, is available tomorrow. We want to extend our sincere thanks to everyone that participated in the beta. We’ve listened to your feedback and made this system software update even better.

There are a lot of changes in this update, from entirely new features to UI enhancements. While we detailed its key features earlier this month, we wanted to give you an overview of our favourite new additions. This update is focused on creating new ways to connect with friends and players around the world, expanding the social capabilities of the system even further.

  • Events: A new Events app has been added to PS4, accessible from the home screen. This will give you an overview of activities taking place in the games you play most, as well as official broadcasts.

For instance, this week we have a double XP racing event in Driveclub and a Team of the Week Event in FIFA 16, you can register directly from the Events app. Once registered you can utilise the auto-boot functionality to set your PS4 to automatically turn on and launch the game and Event at the Event start time. Stay tuned for new gaming events and broadcasts.
  • Communities: PS4 users will have the ability to create and join communities based around shared interests, like games, genres, and more. Communities include a message board with general discussion, screenshots shared by players, and the ability to join parties/games. You can find the Communities for the games you own on the game’s live detail page. See the Communities your friends have joined in the Friends app.
ATT00002ATT00006

  • PlayStation Plus: We’ve made a dedicated section for PlayStation Plus, which you can access from your PS4’s home screen. Once there you can easily manage your membership, see the monthly free games to download, as well as deals for PS Plus members, and all of the games you’ve redeemed through PS Plus on PS4. And a reminder to PS Plus members, your online storage for PS4 saves has now increased to 10GB.

ATT00004

  • Sharing video clips to Twitter: Now it’s easy to share video clips to Twitter directly from your PS4. Maximum video length is 10 seconds, though you’ll have the ability to trim longer clips. Don’t forget – you can double tap the SHARE button to start recording a video, and press it again to stop.
  • YouTube live: Now you can livestream directly from your PS4 to YouTube. Livestreams will be viewable across YouTube.
  • Request to Share Play and Broadcast: Want to try out your friend’s new game? Now you can Request to start a Share Play session or watch your friend play via a Broadcast. Your friend can chose to start a Share Play session or begin a Broadcast.
  • Live from PlayStation: Keep up with the hottest gaming trends by viewing the most popular broadcasts, video clips, and screenshots uploaded from around the world.
  • PNG Screenshots: If you’d like your game screenshots to be in a higher quality format, you can now select PNG instead of JPEG. To access, press Share > Share Settings > Screenshot Settings > Image Format. We took some comparison shots.
  • Favourite Groups: We’ve added the option for Favourite Groups to the Friends app, making it easier to access groups of people you play games with frequently. You can see we have favorite groups for Call of Duty, Rocket League, and (of course) our Destiny fireteam. Once you’re in the favourite group, you’ll see the online status for players, what games they are playing, and the option to message or chat in party.
Favourite GroupsFavourite Groups 2

  • Stickers: From the PS4 system’s Messages app, you’ll see a new option for Stickers. The 3.00 update will contain stickers themed around Uncharted 4, Knack, Little Big Planet3, Resogun, and more.

We’re constantly striving to make PS4 even better, and appreciate all the feedback! We hope you enjoy the Kenshin update, and let us know what you think in the Comments below.

How Croteam built a bot to beat its PS4 puzzler The Talos Principle

The 13th October launch date for The Talos Principle: Deluxe Edition on PS4 is drawing near and with that we wanted to pull back the curtain a little bit on the award-winning philosophical puzzle game. Making a game is hard, and making a puzzle game might be harder because it requires finding a fine balance between challenging players on an increasing difficulty curve while always being fair with the logic and reasoning required to find the solutions.

E3_2015_Mediakit_018

At a certain point during the development process, we realized that we need to test gameplay on daily basis, as minor design changes could break carefully planned puzzle concepts very easily. We just couldn’t afford manpower for that purpose, since The Talos Principle was shaping out to be very, very long, so we had to think of something completely different. And what better way to test a game about sentient AI than with AI? Thus – The Bot was born. His purpose was to play through each new game build and solve all puzzles, reporting ones that couldn’t be solved (due to errors in mechanics, obstacles etc.).

To be able to do this, Bot got a set of navigational and behavior markers, telling him what to do on specific spots, like pick up a hexahedron or connect a red emitter with a red source. Using this basic programming and advanced path navigation, he was able to solve puzzle after puzzle, until the whole game was tested, which would take average human around 4-5 hours. Once the logic for automated bot testing was there, we could actually skip the rendering part and do the time-lapse, so that it took him only 20 minutes to go through entire game, and report all bugs that he could find.

E3_2015_Mediakit_018

This helped us tremendously as we could sleep peacefully knowing the game could be played from start to finish. We estimate that Bot spent equivalent of 80,000 human hours of pure playtime to test The Talos Principle: Deluxe Edition completely as well as the included expansion Road to Gehenna.

While there will always be a place for standard human testers in games, advances like the Bot in The Talos Principle provide developers like Croteam hundreds of hours of human playtesting time compacted down to just a day or so. By utilizing several of these bots testing simultaneously, Croteam can comb through the game in a few hours and repeat with each adjustment made by level designers in order to create a nearly flawless experience for the fans.

The Talos Principle: Deluxe Edition launches on PS4 13th October via PlayStation Store. This PlayStation-exclusive edition includes the original award-winning game and the massive Road to Gehenna expansion for more masterful players.

5 reasons why you should pick up FIFA 16 on PS4 today

The new season of EA Sports FIFA is here and we cannot wait for fans to get their hands on the beautiful game.

Regardless if you’re a seasoned FIFA player or have been curious about joining the fold, here are five reasons to play FIFA 16.

1. Earn big rewards in FUT Draft

Experience FIFA Ultimate Team‘s new mode, FUT Draft. Build a squad by drafting available players, then play in a series of up to four matches. Win or lose, you’ll earn high-value FUT rewards to use in your Ultimate Team Club.

fifa16_ps4_nyfcwalkout_hires

Draft a squad and challenge opponents in a tournament to win coins, packs, and more. Test your team-building skills and pick the best player for each position from a five player draw. Make key choices based on player quality or team chemistry. Earn bigger match prizes as you progress – win all four games in a row to earn the best rewards!

2. Increase your club’s budget in Career Mode

Participate in pre-season tournaments to strengthen your squad and your club’s transfer budget in Career Mode. Also new this year, player training options allow managers to focus on individual player attributes and build the perfect squad to fit their style of play.

3. Women are in the game

For the first time in the FIFA franchise, play with 12 women’s national teams, including the World Champions USA, previous title holders Germany and popular sides like Australia, Canada, France and Sweden. Experience this all new way to play and compete in Kick Off, an Offline Tournament, and Online Friendly Matches.
