Why you might be playing Bloodborne for a long, long time

If you’ve played one of FromSoftware’s brilliant, brutal Souls games, you’ll know that they can suck you in for months at a time. I’ll sheepishly admit to having lost a couple of hundred hours to the series myself. Depending on your perspective then, you’ll be happy to hear that the studio’s forthcoming PS4 debut, Bloodborne, will offer just as much value, with the main adventure comparable in scope to any of the Souls games.

However, factor in the Chalice Dungeons feature – as revealed last month – and Bloodborne is promising to take up residency in your console for much longer than its predecessors.

A quick recap for the uninitiated. As you play through Bloodborne you’ll obtain various items that you can use to perform rituals in the game’s central hub area. These rituals serve to open up a Chalice Dungeon.

These dungeons are ruinous areas underneath the town of Yharnham that differ depending on the combination of items you use in your ritual. No two players will ‘spawn’ identical dungeons, though you can invite other players to fight with you and help clear out the instance that you’ve created.

The size – and difficulty – of each dungeon will vary, as will the enemies and boss fights you encounter. Once you’ve defeated the Chalice Dungeon boss you can save and replay the dungeon, or perform a new ritual to bring forth a brand new challenge that’s unique to your game. Like I said, Bloodborne is going to be with you for a good long while!

Want to find out a little more about what to expect from the Chalice Dungeons? Check out the video above to see some gameplay footage and hear from Producer Masaaki Yamagiwa. Beyond that, stay glued to PlayStation Blog for lots more on Bloodborne in the run up to its 25th March launch.

And one final thing: for those of you that don’t yet have a PS4 and are looking forward to Bloodborne – we’ve got you covered! Hitting stores across Europe from launch day, the Bloodborne PS4 bundle includes the following:

  • Bloodborne

  • Black PS4 console

  • Black Dualshock 4

Check your local retailers for the chance to pre-order now.

MLB 15 The Show – new features and release date revealed

Spring is just around the corner and that means life is about to get a whole lot better. Baseball fans across the world relish the return of America’s great pastime along with the return of peanuts, Yasiel Puig, Matt Vasgersian and of course, MLB 15: The Show. As many of you are excited for the new MLB season to begin, the team here in San Diego is just as excited to show you everything we’ve been working on for MLB 15 The Show.

Take a look at some of the features we’re particularly proud of below and be the first to read about how you can celebrate our 10th Anniversary of MLB The Show. Be sure to head over to The Show Nation to see the full feature list.

mlb15_keyart_12032014_1417689191_1418123574

Year-to-year saves (PS4, PS3, PS Vita)

Users who purchased MLB 14 The Show will be able to continue their Franchise and Road to the Show progress in MLB 15 The Show with the Year-to-Year Saves feature. Saves between the two releases will be forward-compatible, meaning you don’t have to worry about starting your Franchise or Road to The Show seasons over!

Gameplay improvements (PS4 & PS3 only)

  • Advanced AI logic results in outfielders taking more realistic routes to the ball

  • Upgraded motion system allows for dynamic speed matching from run to catch to throw

  • User controlled cut offs

  • All new slide and tag system

  • New speed paradigm for fielders and base runners

  • Enhanced ball physics for pop ups, fly balls, and shots into the gap

  • Dynamic pitch breaks: Allows for more realistic pitch recognition when batting

  • Simplified Analog swing controls

  • Dynamic Difficulty 2.0

  • New situational base covering intelligence allows for new animations to play when a player has time or is in a hurry to get to his base

  • More than 70 new situational third out fielding animations

  • New Input Type option for hitting

    • We’ve separated swing input as a separate option

Licensed equipment (PS4 & PS3 only)

For the first time ever MLB The Show will include licensed equipment from some of the most recognisable brands in baseball. Earn as you play to enhance your RTTS or Diamond Dynasty players and partner with iconic brands by bringing sponsorships to your Franchise team! (Equipment on PS3 version is not seen during gameplay.)

Graphical improvements (PS4 only)

  • Real-time seasonal sun and shadows

  • Player skin tone realism. More variations of skin tones with gloss and specular improvements

  • Revamped night lighting

  • More accurate and photorealistic rendering system

  • PS4 gets 10 more Minor League stadiums

Franchise Mode refresh (PS4, PS3, PS Vita)

With the addition of General Manager Contracts, you now have to consider Ownership Expectations when running your team, and your performance will determine the job offers that come your way. Building a championship-caliber team is more fun and dynamic than ever before, with the new Performance-based Player Progression, as well as much improved Trade and Contract logic. Partner up with Brand Sponsors, giving your broadcast elements an official sponsor and earn some extra dough to spend on your team.

Directional Hitting interface (PS4, PS3, PS Vita)

Featured for the first time in MLB 15 The Show is the new Directional Hitting interface, which allows you to influence the direction of your hits in real-time while you swing. Using the L-Stick, you can attempt to influence fly balls, ground balls, pushed hits, pulled hits, or any of those in combination.

Universal Rewards (PS4 & PS3 only)

  • Virtual Baseball cards to be collected and easily assembled into a competitive Diamond Dynasty team

  • Licensed Bats, Gloves, Batting Gloves, and Cleats that enhance your Road to the Show or Diamond Dynasty players’ abilities

  • Brand Sponsorships for your Franchise team that spice up your in-game interface and earn your team some extra income

  • Collect entire teams to unlock MLB legendary alumni players from each MLB team

Legends (PS4, PS3, PS Vita)

We partnered with the MLB Player’s Alumni Association to make a total of 30 Legends playable in MLB 15 The Show. Collect an entire MLB team, and you’ll unlock an iconic alumni player from that team. There’s one from each team, and though you’ll have to find or unlock the card to slot them into your Dynasty squad, you can simply opt in to utilizing the whole pool of Legends in your Franchise mode.

“Inside The Show” news suite (PS4, partial PS3)

Franchise, RTTS, and Season modes all feature a new suite of features centered on providing news updates from around the league. Inside The Show is a new radio broadcast that will be heard at the beginning of each new day and will discuss recent scores, notable performances, team news, milestones, records, standings, and more. In addition, the new League Updates panel, found in season based modes, gives the user a quick snapshot of updates from around the League so you don’t have to dig through multiple screens to get the basics.

As you can see, our goal this year was to build off the solid foundation of MLB 14 and expand on the game we love to make MLB 15 The Show the best baseball game ever made.

We’re also excited to announce the worldwide gameplay reveal of MLB 15 The Show on 5th February at 10.00pm GMT on Twitch. PlayStation Plus in February: Transistor, Yakuza 4, Thief, Rogue Legacy, more

Hi everyone! As the nights are still long and days a little chilly up here in the northern hemisphere what better way to keep yourself entertained than with a fresh batch of PlayStation Plus games. We’ve got a real mix of treats for you this month…

New on PlayStation 4

First up this month on PS4, rich 2D action adventure set in mythical ancient Greece. Apotheon takes you on a journey to the top of Mount Olympus where, as humanity’s last champion, you must pass through the land of the dead, infiltrate Mount Olympus, and end the wrath of the Gods. With sword, spear, and shield in hand, you will sneak, conspire, loot, and battle your way through majestic palaces and chthonic depths as you climb towards godhood.

Next up a game that IGN, Game Informer and Edge all rated 9/10! Transistor is a sci-fi themed action RPG that invites you to wield an extraordinary weapon of unknown origin as you fight through a stunning futuristic city. The game integrates thoughtful strategic planning into a fast-paced action experience, melding responsive gameplay and rich atmospheric storytelling.

New on PlayStation 3

First up on PS3, a dark adventure in the form of Thief . A rising tide of fear in The City has led to hatred saturating every stone and whilst the rich prosper, the less fortunate face misery and repression. Into this shadowy world steps master thief Garrett. Square-Enix’s franchise reinvention features intelligent design that allows you to take full control, with freedom to choose your path through the game’s levels.

Also on PS3, an open world adventure set in the criminal underground of Tokyo. Yakuza 4 lets you play as a variety of characters whose stories are all cleverly woven together in one big conspiracy. Which story will you follow first?

New on PS Vita

Coming to PS Vita this month, acclaimed 2D platform adventure Rogue Legacy . You must traverse a procedurally-generated castle to uncover the secrets of your cursed heritage. You have only one chance though, as there is no redemption from death. Do you have what it takes to uncover your family’s history and redeem its honour?

Finally this month, Kick and Fennick – an adventure about a small boy with a big gun! Soon after waking up in a desolate but colorful world, Kick meets a small flying robot named Fennick. When Fennick saves Kick from a menacing guard robot, they find out Fennick’s battery is broken. Together, they embark on an adventure to the Core Tower to find Fennick a new energy core.

You can also use Spotify while playing games on PS4, enabling you to soundtrack your gaming sessions with your favorite songs in the background. Want something heavy and rocking for an intense Destiny Raid? How about some old school hip hop while taking to the pitch in FIFA? With more than 30 million songs and 1.5 billion playlists, Spotify on PlayStation Music has it covered.

As we get closer to launch we look forward to telling you about some of the other great features that will be available exclusively through Spotify on PlayStation Music.

The new service will launch initially on PS4 and PS3, as well as Xperia smartphones and tablets. You’ll of course be able to listen to your favorite playlists – including existing playlists from current Spotify users as well as Spotify curated playlists – and enjoy the service on all of Spotify’s supported devices.

Prior to the launch of Spotify on PlayStation Music, the Music Unlimited service will close in all 19 countries on 29th March 2015. Nearly all of these countries will be among the 41 markets where PlayStation Music featuring Spotify will be available at launch, including the UK, France, Germany, Spain and Italy. From 28th February 2015, Music Unlimited users with active subscriptions will receive free access to Music Unlimited through 29th March 2015.

New on PlayStation Store: Dying Light, Grim Fandango Remastered, Life is Strange

First up this week, first-person action survival game Dying Light. Roam a city devastated by a mysterious epidemic, scavenging for supplies and crafting weapons to help defeat the hordes of flesh-hungry enemies the plague has created. At night, beware the Infected as they grow in strength and even more lethal nocturnal predators leave their nests…

Elsewhere, one of the most acclaimed adventure games of all time is back! Grim Fandango’s epic story of four years in the life (or death) of Manny Calavera, travel agent to the dead, has been remastered to look, sound, and control better than ever.

Also out this week, episodic adventure game Life is Strange, rhythmic-puzzler Magical Beat and new costumes for LittleBigPlanet 3 based on some rather elusive creatures.

And lastly, if, for whatever reason you have yet to pick up inFAMOUS Second Son, then I’m happy to say that it is your deal of the week, so go grab it now!

Check out the first trailer for incoming PS4 eSport title Gunsport

We previously introduced Necrosoft Games’ Gunsport to you back in April — it’s a cyberpunk volleyball with guns-style eSport for the PS4, coming in late 2015. After a successful showing at PlayStation Experience, we’d like to finally reveal to you our first teaser trailer. In it, you’ll get a glimpse into the world of Gunsport – a world without war.

In the alternate future of Gunsport, humanity has lost its taste for war, and regional pride now takes the form of sport and performance, much like football or soccer does in America and Europe. But each region, many of which were newly formed after the fall of war, has achieved its new found peace in a unique way.

Today we will tell you about one of those: Neo Tokyo. Neo Tokyo reflects a Japan that is consumed by technology, much like you see in the real Tokyo of today. But Neo Tokyo also marries this with another real Tokyo trend – the desire by some to return to a time of master craftsmanship, strong national identity, and creation.

gunsport_01

This is why the Neo Tokyo you’ll see in Gunsport appears to be so analog focused – with neon signs, personally crafted automobiles, and buildings that are allowed to wear down and show their character, without losing their functionality. Everything in Neo Tokyo was hand crafted to bring out its unique flavor.

Neo Tokyo also values a strong sense of group identity, which you’ll find in our characters, which we’ll be introducing at a later date. The current Neo Tokyo characters you see in the trailer, on the right side of the screen, are… shall we say apprentices in the game of Gunsport. Where you might consider these players to be initiates, or street punks, our final characters are masters, sponsored by the Yakuza for their prowess and what they represent to the national identity. That doesn’t mean they always go along with what others say, though.

The future of Gunsport

In this trailer you’ll also catch a few seconds of the Blue Cambodia background, as well as our team from the People’s Republic of Oakland (on the left), which is a new city-state in the US. There will be more stages and characters revealed as we move forward – we are trying to make this a very international game, as we are a very international team. No two people at Necrosoft even live in the same country!

What we’re showing you here in this trailer is our prototype – since its creation we have been working hard to revamp and update all our backgrounds, characters, and we hope you’ll like what we have in store.

The game is tough, it’s hard, it’s fast, and since each team has its own stage, its own weapon set, and its own personality, we think it will provide a fair amount of variety. Please feel free to follow our progress as we work on Gunsport through our official site, and our Twitter account. We hope you like the trailer, and may all your shots be true!

New video explores Life is Strange’s ‘rewind time’ concept

Hello from all of the DONTNOD development team! We’re still hard at work here at the studio but would like to share the second Life is Strange dev diary for you to see more of the game we’ve been creating here in Paris.

This second video from the three part series is called ‘The Butterfly Effect’ and explains everything you need to know about Max’s ability to rewind time, including how the concept originated and exactly how rewinding time in Life is Strange works.

If you want to ask us any questions about the game we’re hosting a Reddit AMA on Wednesday 27th January 2015 between 3.00pm and 5.00pm CET (2.00pm-4.00pm GMT) at http://ift.tt/XfzBdY. Hope to see you there!

Thanks for all the support and kind comments so far. The first episode is being released in just seven days and counting. The wait for Life is Strange is almost over and we can’t wait to hear what you think.

10 of the best #PlayStationMemories

Hi there everyone. It’s a little quiet on the news front today, so it seems like a good time for something a bit different. As some of you might remember, during our 20th anniversary celebrations last month, we put out a call via Twitter and Facebook for you to share some of your best PlayStation memories.

Over the past couple of weeks we’ve rifled through your contributions, picked out a few of our favourites, and illustrated them with the animations below. Take a look, see if your suggestions made the cut, and let us know which clip is your favourite!

Brand new The Order: 1886 story trailer makes its debut

Well, it took a few years to get here, but I’m happy to say that The Order: 1886 went gold last week!

It’s almost hard to believe that the game is wrapped up. There are definitely times when we miss the madness that takes place when finishing a game. From our first initial pitch of the project back in 2010, to growing our team over the last four years, we have poured all our energy and passion into this game and we can’t wait for everyone to experience it.

Back at the PlayStation Experience event in December, we were able to finally show a long demo of the game that encompasses the many things we have revealed until now: Neo-Victorian London, The Order, its Knights and their weapons and technology, and their struggle against the Rebellion and the Half-Breeds.

We still have a lot more to tell you before the release but today we’re presenting a brand new trailer that we hope will whet your appetite; a glimpse into the conspiracy that has been slowly brewing in the city of London.

From the whole team at RAD, a very big thank you for your support and encouragement. We’re looking forward to the launch on 20th February and for everyone to be finally able to get their hands on the game.

The Elder Scrolls Online: Tamriel Unlimited launches 9th June on PS4

We are excited to announce that The Elder Scrolls Online: Tamriel Unlimited edition arrives on PlayStation 4 on Tuesday, 9th June! This marks the first time in the series’ history that you’ll be able to play an Elder Scrolls game on the console with your friends.

Tamriel Unlimited features all the major updates that the game has seen on PC over the last year plus many important changes that will be rolling out in the coming months.

The biggest change coming with Tamriel Unlimited is that you will no longer need a game subscription to play! Because we are removing the requirement for a monthly game subscription, you will now need to ensure you have an active PSN account with PlayStation Plus to play ESO as long as you like.

3D Boxshot Wizard LHS v1.1

If you’ve played ESO on PC or Mac, you’ll immediately notice the major changes made to the game’s user interface. The game now caters to your Dual Shock 4 controller, and feels closer to experiences you’ve had with past Elder Scrolls games on consoles.

One of our biggest changes arriving in time for ESO’s PS4 launch is addition of the Champion and Justice systems. The Champion System is a totally new progression system for max-level characters, while the Justice System, which allows you to steal, murder, and be brought to justice if you’re caught! Stop there, criminal scum!

Tamriel Unlimited also debuts ESO’s new optional membership package, ESO Plus. With this premium membership service, players will be granted free access to all of the game’s DLC game packs; bonuses to XP, gold, and crafting; and a monthly allotment of Crowns to purchase items from the Crown Store.

What’s the Crown Store, you ask? This is an all-new merchant store to ESO game full of optional cosmetic and convenience items you can purchase for Crowns, a new currency allowing you to buy content directly from the from the PlayStation Store. You’ll be able to fully enjoy ESO without being a member, but we think you’ll really enjoy the benefits if you have fun playing the game.

Those that don’t enroll in ESO Plus can still expect free patches that implement fixes and other improvements along with optional DLC offerings you can purchase to add more adventures to the already-enormous game.

Between now and the game’s release, we’ve got plenty more to share on Tamriel Unlimited – including details on when you’ll first be able to play the game in beta. Until then, sit back and enjoy the fourth, and final part of our ESO cinematic trailer.

On behalf of everyone at ZeniMax Online and Bethesda, we look forward to having our Elder Scrolls fans in the PlayStation community join our adventure. See you online in June!

Final Fantasy XIV Patch 2.5 “Before the Fall” Now Live

Today, an article from my US-colleague, Matt! Greetings, PlayStation gamers! My name is Matt “Bayohne” Hilton and I’m on the Final Fantasy XIV community team. We’re extremely excited that Part 1 of our latest Patch 2.5, titled “Before the Fall,” is now live! As with each major update, there is a lot of exciting content to tackle and I’d like to introduce PlayStation Blog readers to some of the major points to experience.

First off, if you haven’t seen it, check out the Patch 2.5 – Before the Fall trailer!

We’ve got new dungeons for you and your fellow adventurers to challenge, including the massive “Keeper of the Lake!” Here you’ll be tasked with climbing inside the wreckage of a giant Garlean airship that was destroyed by wyrm lord Midgardsormr. The remains of the wyrm lord are still wrapped around his defeated foe to this day…

The final chapter of the Crystal Tower story also makes its debut and sends players into the World of Darkness, where familiar Final Fantasy bosses await. Will your alliance of 24 adventurers be able to overcome the Cloud of Darkness?

The primal elder Odin has been spotted once more in the Shroud and adventurers have been asked to investigate. You know what that means? It’s time to form a party to try and take him down! This special battle was originally created for our global fan events, but now it’s available for everyone to try — and it’s even harder than before.

Of course, everyone’s favourite Manderville man makes his return as well! Hildibrand — agent of enquiry, inspector extraordinaire — is hot on the trail of the phantom thief and it’s up to you to assist in solving the case! It seems that Gilgamesh has returned with even more arms than before… each wielding a different weapon, too! Maybe we should talk this out???

We’ll also be launching Patch 2.51 in February, featuring the Manderville Gold Saucer! If you’re a Final Fantasy VII fan, you may find a lot of similarities here from the Gold Saucer there! Mini-games, chocobo racing (that you’ll actually control yourself!) and even a full version of the Triple Triad card game from Final Fantasy VIII will be playable! (I can’t wait to spend a ton of time here… fighting bosses and saving the world can wait a bit!)

As I mentioned earlier, this is just a look at “Part 1″ of our Patch 2.5 release. Before the Fall Part 2, set to release in March, will conclude the main storyline that began with A Realm Reborn and prepare players for the release of Heavensward, our first expansion!

This is just a brief look at what’s available to play and there is much more waiting for you to experience. What’s that? You don’t currently play FFXIV, but you want to try it out? Well, perfect, because we have a 14-day (get it?) trial available for free on the PlayStation 4, as well as on the PS3 in the coming days! It’s a great opportunity to jump into the realm of Eorzea and take the first steps of your adventure!

Now if you’ll excuse me, it’s time to start tackling some of this new Patch 2.5 content!

Borderlands: The Handsome Collection hits PS4 next month

Ever since we announced Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel, nearly every fan I’ve heard from at trade shows, on Twitter, in the comments, or on the forums has asked one question: when is it coming to PS4? Well, we appreciate your patience, and today we have some good news for all of you: not only are we bringing The Pre-Sequel to PS4 on 27th March, but Borderlands 2 is coming along with it! Both titles will be available in one package as Borderlands: The Handsome Collection.

The Handsome Collection has both games running in gorgeous HD and looking pretty damn great, at a resolution and performance level never before seen in Borderlands on consoles. Beyond that, The Handsome Collection also has another cool first for Borderlands: four-player split-screen! Yup, four friends can hang out on the couch and play in split-screen on a single TV with The Handsome Collection, in Borderlands 2 or The Pre-Sequel.

Have you already started Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel and/or Borderlands 2 on PS3 or Borderlands 2 PS Vita? Don’t worry: using Cross-Save functionality, you’ll be able to transfer your save to and from PS4 to pick up right where you left off, along with your levelled-up character, Badass Rank, and everything else you worked so hard for.

But what about the DLC? Well, that’s all included, too. Yup, The Handsome Collection includes ALL of the add-on content for both Borderlands 2 and The Pre-Sequel, which is a heck of a lot of stuff. To give you an idea of just how much we’ve stuffed into that little box, here’s a list of everything you’ll get in addition to the base games:

  • Upcoming Season Pass Content (playable class)

  • Upcoming Season Pass Content (campaign add-on)

Back when Borderlands 2 came out in 2012, it launched alongside a pretty extravagant Collector’s Edition that some of you might have been able to snag. With Borderlands 2 and all of its add-on content coming to next-gen, we knew we had to top ourselves. And so, Borderlands: The Handsome Collection will receive an extremely limited Collector’s Edition, the Claptrap-in-a-Box Edition!

Limited to only 5,000 units worldwide, the Claptrap-in-a-Box Edition includes a remote controlled Claptrap steward bot that you’ll control with a companion app from your iOS or Android device. You’ll be able to play voice samples of some of Claptrap’s most iconic lines and look through a camera to see where Claptrap is headed, all while you control his every move (while balancing on one wheel)!

The Claptrap-in-a-Box Edition also includes 12 really cool exclusive Vault Hunter lithographs, and a collectible steel case, it’ll be available for €349.95 at participating retailers and we recommend getting a move on it if you’re interested — we don’t expect these to last long.

Lastly, we’ll be talking more about The Handsome Collection during our panels at PAX South this week, and I hope we’ll see some of you in San Antonio. Even if you can’t make it, stay tuned for more details leading up to launch.

See you on Pandora and Elpis!

New Project CARS trailer makes its debut

Hi there guys, Andy Tudor here from Slightly Mad Studios. I hope everyone had a great holiday and New Year! Normally the holidays are a welcome time to relax with friends and family, eat turkey, celebrate over a couple of drinks, and watch some movies but there’s no rest for the wicked unfortunately – we were hard at work getting Project CARS ready for launch in just a few short months!

Having made the decision to get players like yourselves involved in the creation of the game right from day one, you’re finally going to get your hands on what we believe is truly the most technically-advanced, beautiful, intense and authentic racing game there’s ever been! YOU have tested it, YOU have guided its direction telling us what features, cars, tracks and much more to put in, and ultimately YOU have been approving it at every step of the way so that it’s truly the racing game of your dreams.

For those still wondering why they should get Project CARS, here’s a quick rundown of what to expect…

  • It’s got a huge variety of motorsports on offer. Our teams are based in over 18 different countries so cars and car culture all mean something different to us all. For me, it’s growing up in the ’80s with the Formula 1 days of Nigel Mansell and Ayrton Senna. For others it’s modern-day NASCAR, the German Touring scene, or European Endurance racing. So with Project CARS we wanted to ensure the cars in the game represented truly global motorsports with each of their rules and formats intact.

  • Project CARS has the largest track roster of any recent racing game: locations from all around the world from Australia to Dubai to Belgium, Japan, US West Coast, and the UK we’ve packed in over 250 miles of tarmac.

  • Lastly but by no means least, we’ve ensured that Project CARS is accessible, customisable, and tailored to each and everyone’s comfort and skill level with a huge amount of personalisation options. You can dial the handling to anything from a complete sim experience to something more casual. With Project CARS you’ll truly be able to make it your own.

But enough of me talking – check out our new trailer below to see what gamers like yourselves have been making over the last few years and why we’re all excited here for you to get your hands on it…
