Sci-fi puzzle adventure Soul Axiom announced for PS4

Hello again, PlayStation Blog! Ben Tester here from the indie dev studio Wales Interactive. Today I have the pleasure of announcing our upcoming PS4 title, the sci-fi adventure-puzzler Soul Axiom!

Before we delve into the digital afterlife, we’ve got a brand new story trailer to show you! On top of that, if you’re looking for more gameplay action from our early development stage then can find that here.

So, what’s it all about? Well, in first-person, you’ll explore the world of Elysia, a sprawling digital server where memories and dreams become reality. Anyone who fancies the idea of uploading their soul for digital immortality should look no further!

Along your journey you’ll collect a range of unique hand powers and use these to manipulate or destroy parts of the environment, which will aid in solving cryptic logic puzzles to progress through the game.

To get a better understanding of what these powers are, I’ll introduce to your very first, known as the “Phase” power. With this ability you can essentially materialise and dematerialise objects or walls with the left and right hand respectively. Combining this with other abilities makes for some really… puzzling puzzles.

If you happen to recognise some of the features or visuals you see, chances are you’ve played or at least heard about the adventure horror game, Master Reboot on PS3? Well, Soul Axiom is indeed the spiritual successor, set in the same universe but not a direct sequel. This is a completely new game made from the ground up, built on better foundations and featuring new game mechanics, a whole new host of characters, 40 unique locations and a compelling storyline with multiple endings.

When you start the game you are literally dropped into the action with no idea who or where you are. We give you little guidance, but the levels are intuitive and you have to find your own way through the puzzle solving in order to piece together the story as you go along.

It’s very important for us to give the player respect to find their own way as there is more satisfaction when you feel that you have solved a puzzle or found out a key bit of information about the story. It’s then up to the player to go on a journey of discovery in order to find out who they are and why they are there. You can find out more about the game by visiting the website.

We’re now about 16 months into development and have had the privilege of showcasing the game at some of the biggest gaming events around. Now, we’re heading to EGX in a few weeks’ time, so if anyone reading this is attending the event then keep an eye out for us for a chance to play the Soul Axiom demo!

Soul Axiom’s PS4 release date is currently TBD but as we’re nearing the end of development, expect to see another announcement soon with more details on that. Deus Ex: Mankind Divided release date announced, Collector’s Edition detailed

Hello PlayStation nation! Today, we’re very excited to announce that Deus Ex: Mankind Divided will be launching on PlayStation 4 on 23rd February 2016.

The team has been working hard on the game, and even if its release is still a few months away, having a set date where we know you’ll get a chance to experience the game first hand is a huge motivation for all of us.

In the spirit of player choice, which is at the heart of Deus Ex, we’ve put together a special program called “Augment your pre-order”. It will let you choose the digital pre-order bonuses you want to get for your Day One edition of the game, selected from five different tiers which will unlock progressively. You can of course take part in this program by pre-ordering the game through PlayStation Store.

The available rewards within each tier include in-game items packs, digital books and music expanding on the world of Deus Ex: Mankind Divided, and an extra in-game mission. Dragon Age: Inquisition’s final DLC expansion, Trespasser, detailed in new trailer

As the Inquisitor, you’ve been faced with many choices in your quest to save Thedas. You’ve picked your race, your class, which followers to travel with… and that was only the beginning. Some choices were easy, while others challenged you to think about the long-term repercussions. I, for one, needed a full night’s sleep before I could choose how to deal with a certain Qunari dreadnought situation (don’t worry, I could never abandon the Chargers).

In Trespasser, the final DLC for Dragon Age: Inquisition, you’ll have another tough decision: the time has come to determine the fate of the Inquisition. Creepy PS4 horror Knock Knock arrives next month

Hi! We’re called Ice-Pick Lodge, and we’re happy to announce that 10th September will mark the PS4 release of Knock Knock – a creepy horror game with a rather unusual backstory.

What do you, a small-to-medium size indie game development studio, do when an e-mail pops up full of mysterious scribbles, notes, and audio files – coupled with a vague description of a possible game?

In all honesty, more often than not you probably try to conjure up a polite and friendly response; perhaps discuss the sender’s ideas with them. But that’s not what happened at Ice-Pick Lodge studios in November 2011. Instead of doing the sensible thing, we set to create a horror game that would incorporate the disturbing nature and the subtly sinister undertones of the .zip archive we were sent, while also avoiding the genre clichés like gore, asylums, or jump scares.

It feels nice to give yourselves quests. Many innovative and charming games begin with an idea longing to be implemented, with a desire to try out a new mechanic or, say, combine certain traditions. Knock Knock is not so different in this regard – it’s just that our quest was to recreate a place, a feeling, and an idea first captured in a set of disjointed snippets, bits, and pieces that we extracted from the archive.

There were audio files that ended up becoming “Lodger speak”- the incomprehensible speech of the game’s main character, the Lodger. There were images and text files that made us realise that the game is set in a cabin lost in the woods.

Finally, the very fact of making a game based on an archive from an anonymous source provided Knock Knock with its central motif: the fear of the unknown.

We were – and still are – a bit afraid of what we’ve done, you see. Even those of us who were positive it was nothing more than a prank. Why does it matter anyway? Whether the cabin was located in some real woods or in the mindscape of a very peculiar person, it’s still real in the world of ideas. And the world of ideas was real enough for us to find a note saying “You’ve forgotten someone” when we later went to a forest to fulfil some of the Kickstarter backer rewards (Knock Knock has indeed been successfully Kickstarted, and one of the tiers promised that we would plant a tree for the backer).

The Lodger’s fears spawn from his own close-mindedness, taking the shape of so-called Guests that visit his cabin and engage in a game of creepy hide-and-seek (hide-and-sick?) with him. The only thing the Lodger needs to do to win is to survive until dawn. Is it true? Or is he supposed to break the rules created with his own fearful mind? What if it’s all merely a nightmarish prank? Whatever the correct answer is, we did our best to deliver it subtly. The cabin itself is cozy, and the woods you set to explore from time to time are picturesque.

So what is wrong with this place?

Most human fears boil down to the fact that we reject the alien and the unknown. We fear the dark because something may be there; we indulge in various types of xenophobia because there are a lot of things in this world that simply do not make sense to us.

A cleaver-wielding zombie may be frightening as hell, especially if you’re fragile and lack the means to defend yourself, but we honestly believe that an inexplicable creature set about its own business is even more so. It may not even necessarily present a threat, but by God how does its shape even hold together?! That is not how bodies work at all!

Coupled with the fact that there may or may not be some twisted game going on with the protagonist being the main player, it works to recreate the disconnected mood of the archive rather well. And it’s not us patting ourselves on the back; after the game was first released, the spooky sender has contacted us once again, claiming we’ve made several mistakes, but got the general gist just right. Knock Knock is a pocket of chaos that serves as a direct contradiction to the belief that the world can be made sense of at all; multiple in-game systems (some of them suggested by our dubious benefactor—seemingly for no reason at all) overlap, creating an ever-evolving situation that keeps the player on their toes.

But chaos is unavoidably broken into patterns. That’s just how human mind works – including the mind of our poor protagonist. Perhaps this is what it’s all about.

And, well, that’s better than nothing. When you stare into the darkness, anything is better than nothing – even a doppelganger of yours staring back at you blindly. (That is, of course, not a random metaphor, but something that can be encountered in Knock Knock.)

The horror genre is extremely robust these days—and whatever the origins of the e-mail were, we’re more than happy that someone or something has given us a nudge to add to it while scaring ourselves witless in the process. Now we hope that the black box that is Knock Knock will continue to serve its purpose.

Whatever it is.

Two Star Wars skin packs have just arrived on PlayStation consoles! Disney Interactive, Lucasfilm, and Microsoft have teamed up and created over 70 new skins for the platform.

Both the Star Wars Classic Skin Pack and the Star Wars Rebels Skin Pack cost €2.99/£2.49. Use the buttons on your controller, navigate through PlayStation Store to find the packs, then click the button. It’s easy!

14 totally true facts about PlayStation Plus newcomer Super Time Force Ultra

Hey everyone! Nathan from Capy here again. As you probably noticed, Super Time Force Ultra is coming to PS4 and PS Vita on 1st September, free for PS Plus members. The game is Cross Buy, has a Platinum Trophy, and lets you explode robots and/or dinosaurs and/or angels.

The last time I was on the blog, I shared our PlayStation-exclusive additions to the Super Time Force: President of Sony Computer Entertainment’s Worldwide Studios Shuhei Yoshida, the traveller from Journey and Sir Galahad from The Order: 1886. This time I am here to share a whopping 14 facts that you probably didn’t know about Super Time Force Ultra.

All of these facts are 100% true, 0% exaggerated, and 1000% awesome. Some are also really quite dumb.

Let’s dive in!

  1. Super Time Force Ultra’s main character and reckless leader, CDR. Repeatski is actually based on Capy co-founder Matt Repetski, right down to the earrings and certain verbal expressions. Matt, however, does not wear two eye-patches… we added those for character.
  2. Lou Don Jim’s laser sword is called a Light Saver. Repeat after me: Light. Saver.
  3. We worked on the game for the better part of a year before adding the game’s key feature: the Time-Out mechanic. Previous to that, time would automatically rewind to the beginning of a level only after the player had died. It took us awhile to figure out that this was seriously impacting the length and depth of level, enemy, and boss designs. It was also frustrating as heck. The addition of the Time-Out mechanic changed everything and ended up defining the game.

  4. After a successful debut of the Time-Out mechanic at PAX East, Kenneth Yeung (programmer/designer), Kris Piotrowski (Capy creative director) and Dan Vader (designer) celebrated by eating more than 100 oysters in a single sitting.
  5. Capy artist Vic Nguyen hid a one-frame smiley face in one of the explosion animations that appears throughout the game. Players who are paying attention and slowly rewinding back through time can spot this happy subliminal message.
  6. We made a single, endlessly-scrolling, eye-scorching collection of Super Time Force Ultra GIFs we call The Wall of Gifsanity. It is perhaps our finest achievement. Behold.
  7. Some of the characters that didn’t make the final cut: US Citizen Ninja, Robo Constable, Jesus and Normal House Cat. There was also a character with a fully functional grappling hook as well as a “portal”-ing character. They were cut because they broke every single level in the game.

  8. The police antagonists that appear in the game don the name “SWAZ” rather than “SWAT” as a tribute to the late American actor Patrick Swayze. There is also a copy of the 1988 movie Tiger Warsaw permanently glued to the Capy fridge.

All death screams used in the game were recorded by audio director Sean Lohrisch from inside his bedroom closet to reduce the chance of frightening his neighbours and/or having the police called on him. Sean himself screamed for the male cast, while musician 6955’s wife Kahori screamed for the women. There are also two appearances of the famous Wilhelm scream, both during boss battles.

  10. Over 20 different enemy types didn’t make it into the final game, including spin kicking ninjitsu priests, pogostick-riding football robots, werewolf mermaids and blackhole fur balls from another dimension.
  11. A few of the reasons for the game’s Teen rating include one image that contains 2 pixels of “butt crack”, as well as the game containing numerous instances of “poo coils” (those are ESRB’s exact terms), and usage of the word “fudge.”

  12. Originally, the button icons used for the time rewind controls were the “play,” “rewind” and “fast forward” buttons that you see on a VCR. Then we realized that a lot of the players who will play the game probably have never seen a VCR. We then proceeded to feel pretty old.
  13. Dolphin Lundgren was originally called Soniq the Dolphin. He wore a pair of oversized red sneakers and shot out golden rings as his attack. It was a lawsuit waiting to happen. It was also pretty, pretty, pretty funny.
  14. The original game jam version of the game was called Super Time Squad, which had some fair-sized trademark-related issues. The team rallied around the new name, Super Time Force, partly because we wanted to make a version called Super Time Force Ultra… or STFU. Other names we were considering for the game were:
  • Re/Run (in hindsight, this is a rad name!)
  • The Endless 6 (when we thought we’d only have six characters)
  • Timeliners
  • Super Time Defenders (this didn’t abbreviate well)
  • Space Heroes In Time (this also didn’t abbreviate well)

Acclaimed survival sim This War of Mine: The Little Ones announced for PS4

Hello, Pawel Miechowski from 11 bit studios here. I’m very proud to introduce to you our latest project, something we’ve been working on for the past year and tailoring for PlayStation 4.

This is a very unusual project: a serious game made for a mature gamer; an experience that will tackle your emotions heavily. And now this very unusual project is unveiled. Ladies and gentlemen, let me tell you about This War of Mine: The Little Ones, due out on PS4 on 29th January 2016.

This War of Mine: The Little Ones explores the hardships of wartime survival as seen from an entirely new perspective; that of a child. Based on the award-winning This War of Mine, The Little Ones puts you in charge of a group of adults and children stuck in the middle of hell, trying to survive in a besieged city; struggling with lack of food, medicine and constant danger. The question is: how far will you go to make it through another day?

This experience focuses not only on the reality of enduring war, but also the fact that even in times of conflict, kids are still kids – they laugh, cry, play with toys and see the world differently. In addition to thinking about survival, you’ll have to bring back the kid in yourself to understand how to protect the little ones.

This sounds very serious, right? Because it is. Our goal as the devs was to create a mature experience in which you’re seeing war through eyes of a regular people – so not a military action, but a horrible challenge to overcome. As a group of civilians you’ll be facing extremely difficult choices that have to be made just to survive the war: what do you do when you have to sacrifice someone? What do you do when you’re starving but other survivors may have food? You’ll need to find nourishment, as well as medication, bandages and the like. When you run out of necessities, you’ll need to send one man on a mission to scavenge for any supplies. But kids are not as tough as adults – and you will be the ones taking care of them.

During the night maybe you’ll maybe find some parts that can be used to fix a toy, which children can then play with during the day – kids still need entertainment after all. But kids also sometimes need to talk to someone and feel safe, so don’t forget that as well. Kids create bonds with those who protect them and that’s also portrayed in the game.

Again, very serious right? We’ve had this idea from the very beginning of the development of This War of Mine but we were worried that people may not have been ready for such a serious game. Perhaps even quite a shocking one. But the reception of the game was brilliant – we got tons of positive feedback and acknowledgement for showing war as it was. So the next big step was expanding it by bringing kids to This War of Mine. Now, you’ll be able to experience it on PlayStation 4 in This War of Mine: The Little Ones.

The main philosophy behind this project is to portray emotions of people surviving a siege of a city. That also requires picturing emotions of kids – that means not only sadness, but laughter, excitement, and a bit of craziness despite the surroundings. Their active imaginations are also being portrayed, for example you’ll see children even drawing on the walls of the shelter. We feel that the spectrum of the emotions your civilians will make you experience has now broadened greatly – because, in war kids are still kids – and that’s how one could underline This War of Mine: The Little Ones.

And since we’re on PlayStation Blog, here there’s another piece of news we think you’ll be glad to hear – the PlayStation 4 edition of This War of Mine: The Little Ones will actually contain an exclusive extra shelter known as the “Large Mansion”.

The daytime phase of the game takes place in your shelter and this is where you’ll be caring for survivors and making the tough decisions – so factors like how the building is shaped, how many floors it has, how well it’s fortified and prepared as a potential hideout all have a huge influence over the gameplay itself.

As a result PlayStation 4 players are going to be getting a unique experience here with this new shelter being a part of the game (although you can of course still play in the original shelters too). We’ve spent tons of time in building up this new shelter in the game, spent an enormous amount of time playtesting it and we can’t wait for you guys to be able to check it out.

Backstabbing Wild-West party game Thief Town coming soon to PS4

You may be asking yourself, “Thief Town? What’s that?” Well, it’s only the latest in multiplayer thief-related action, with graphics that look so real! Now, you may be screaming, “Wow! So cool!”

Thief Town is a local multiplayer stealth party game for two to four players, coming soon exclusively to PS4. Stab your buddies in a pixel-perfect rendition of the Wild West. Yee-haw!

You and your friends play as the thieves, who need to sneak around the town to try and stab the other players. The only problem is, every player looks exactly alike. Not only that, but the town is also filled with identical-looking computer-controlled thieves. You’ve got to disguise yourself in the crowd while figuring out which thieves are actually your friends. Once you find ’em, stab ’em! Get points and win the game!

You can’t just go around stabbing everyone in Thief Town. You’ll only get points by stabbing the other players. If you stab an NPC, the only thing you’ll do is reveal yourself! So be sneaky and make that first stab count, because that harmless Thief behind you might just be another player…

Lurk in the crowd, emulate non-player characters, and achieve backstabbing victory. These are the laws that Thief Town was founded upon.

The game mode we just described is appropriately called “Thief Town,” a standard round where you hide in the crowd and stab your friends for points. The full package comes with three game modes, two arenas, tons of items, and PS4 bonus features!

Spy Town gives players items to trick and trap enemy Thieves before going in for the kill. Use smoke bombs, motion detectors, and teleportation devices to gain an advantage… but be careful, they’re one-use only!

Drunk Town is a 1v3 round where one player becomes “The Sheriff,” whose job is to sniff out and shoot those pesky Thieves with his pistol. Too bad the Thieves don’t have their knives this time — they’ll just have to behave until time or the Sheriff’s bullets run out!

Thief Town also has two Towns: the Wild West and Spooky Town. Giant, killer tumbleweeds and camouflaging sand storms ravage the Wild West, while Spooky Town’s creepy statues and lightning storms help to reveal the location of players.

We’ve also included a number of awesome PS4-exclusive features. Stab your touchpad with your finger to stab your friend in the game! Customise your Thief with 256 potential names, like “Cross-Circle-Square-Square”, or “Triangle-Triangle-Cross-Triangle”! We’ve also hidden some secret screen filters in “The Saloon,” our game’s interactive menu…
