Axiom Verge: an adventure 5 years in the making

“A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step” – Lao Tzu

It was about 5 years ago that I kicked off a side hobby project. At the time I was working at Petroglyph on an RTS game as a programmer during the day, and just wanted a fun side project to work on on my own as a hobby for my evenings and weekends. Some people build model airplanes, some collect stamps. My hobby is making games.

I didn’t start off with Axiom Verge fully designed in my head. It really more started off as an exercise in game design. I wanted to deconstruct my favourite games from my youth and see what would happen if I took the best elements of each and put them together. The Yo-Yo weapon of Rygar, and the grapple hook of Bionic Commando, in the setting of Blaster Master and Shatterhand. What would fit together? What wouldn’t work?

I’m trained as both an artist and programmer, and since I was doing a lot of programming as part of my day job, I started my hobby project with art. I started off just by drawing map areas. Nothing inside each of the rooms, just a collection of rooms linked together with an overall flow, including where people would need to get something to open up a new area. I then filled in the rooms with different platforms and obstacles to create a path.

Here’s part of an early map – to show the whole thing would be a bit spoilery. This dates from May 2010. The names of the areas and characters have changed a lot since then!

EarlyMap

Next I spent about six months to a year doing nothing but drawing art – particularly the environmental tilesets. This one is dated June 21, 2010:

EarlyTileSet

Gradually the theme of the game started to come together. The more I drew, the more it started to coalesce into a unified, consistent world. Around this time it went from a side hobby to really becoming an all-encompassing passion for me. I’d wake up in the middle of the night with an idea for a new boss, and immediately grab my sketch pad and draw. Here are some of my early sketches and what they eventually became.

TrapClaw

The TrapClaw was one of the first enemies I designed. I sketched it out around November 2010 and had it animated by March 2011.

Uruku

I sketched and pixelated one of the boss characters, Uruku, sometime in January 2011 and had him animated in February 2011. I didn’t code any of his gameplay until July 2013, at which point I also went back and revised his body segments to have a more tiled appearance.

Writing music has been a hobby of mine since I was 19 or so, but I never actually had any formal training in it. I had finalised the music by January 2011.

As the story came together with the art and the music, the idea of glitching came to mind. I think it occurred to me while I was animating the first pass on Trace, sometime in March 2011. I was thinking back to when I used to make games glitch by swapping out cartridges during gameplay or using my Game Genie.

It used to fascinate me as a kid that I could walk through a glitched wall into an area that was never intended to be seen. Or I could make enemies behave in strange ways. Sometimes it would freeze the game, and sometimes it would do something useful, but I just loved being able to experiment with all of that stuff.

It wasn’t until after most of the art and level design was done on paper that I actually started coding. I wanted to make sure I had all of the art assets done, because needing to stop programming right in the middle because you need an asset for a creature can really pull you out of your rhythm.

It was important to me to get the feel of the game just right. An exploration action adventure game shouldn’t feel floaty. It needs to be precise and responsive. The enemies should be challenging but not impossible.

Three or four years into the entire process, the game was really starting to come together. There were long playable areas with polished art and music and an interesting game mechanic. But I was still working on it weekends and evenings, because I needed an income.

I attended IndieCade and got a chance to show the game to Sony, and almost six months later, they offered to include me in the Pub Fund program. Although the Pub Fund didn’t include any direct up-front investment on Sony’s part, it did give me a guarantee that I would at least make some money if I finished the game. And that was all I really needed. About one year ago, I switched from full-time to part-time at Petroglyph (essentially reversing the priorities I had for the previous four years) and six months ago quit my day job altogether.

The game was fully playable from beginning to end at that point, so my main focus was polish – figuring out good hiding spots for different weapons and power-ups, having playtesters go through the game and see where they struggled, and fixing lots and lots of little bugs.

A lot of people have told me they admire my tenacity for being able to stay dedicated to a project for so long. I’ve heard people remark that I must be a workaholic to come home from my day job and then work on my own game as well. I don’t see it that way. It’s been a true joy every step, and there was never really a point where I felt like I was grinding. It started as a hobby and ended the same way.

PlayStation Plus in April: Dishonored, Killzone Mercenary, Never Alone, more

Spring is officially here but that doesn’t mean it’s time to put down your controller and head outside! We’ve got some great titles coming your way courtesy of PlayStation Plus this April, so make sure you download them before they vanish quicker than an Easter egg!

New on PlayStation 4:

First up this month on PS4 is yet another day one title for PS Plus! Tower of Guns is an old-school rogue-like first person shooter with randomised levels and enemies. It’s a pure FPS experience for players who just want to grab a big gun, shoot stuff and battle gigantic bosses. No stupid NPCs to get in the way, no ridiculous story to explain your motivations. You’re the good guy, they’re the bad guys. If you get to the end, you win.

Next up, developed in partnership with the Alaska Native community, Never Alone (Kisima Ingitchuna) is an atmospheric puzzle platformer that explores the harsh and dynamic world of Alaska Native stories. You will explore awe-inspiring environments, perform heroic deeds, and meet legendary characters. Take on the roles of both Nuna and Fox as you explore the fascinating, frigid and potentially deadly world of the Iñupiat people.

And don’t miss Aaru’s Awakening – a stylish hand-drawn, fast-paced 2D action platformer, that’s also available on PS3. The game puts players in charge of Aaru, a mythical creature with two unique abilities; teleportation and charging. He uses these abilities as he travels through the dangerous world of Lumenox to defeat an evil entity. These two abilities are at the heart of every level design throughout the game, to make for a challenging and fluid experience.

New on PlayStation 3:

We’ve a real treat for PS3 owners this month – a game that IGN rated 9.2/10, and a must-play for any discerning gamer. Dishonored is a stealth action adventure set in the fictional, plague-ridden industrial city of Dunwall. The game follows the story of Corvo Attano, bodyguard to the Empress of the Isles, who is framed for her murder and forced to become an assassin, seeking revenge on those who conspired against him.

New on PS Vita:

From the talented team at Guerilla Cambridge comes the ultimate in portable FPS action, Killzone Mercenary . You are thrown into a deadly firefight where you not only fight alongside the dangerous ISA, but also shoulder to shoulder with the vicious Helghast. There is no good. There is no evil. There is only the mission… and the money.

Finally this month, make sure you pick up MonsterBag. This tricky little title is all about puzzles and platforms as you try and guide a little backpack-shaped monster on a stealthy adventure in an attempt to reach his friend Nia. MonsterBag may look cute and funny but there’s a dark side also await…

In summary

Leaving PS Plus:

8h April: Oddworld: New ‘n’ Tasty

8th April: Valiant Hearts

8th April: Papo and Yo

8th April: Sherlock Holmes Crimes and Punishments

Super Mega Baseball comes to Europe on 1st April

Hey! This is Scott from Metalhead Software, an indie studio floating on an island off the Canadian west coast. Super Mega Baseball, our first game, arrived in the Americas late last year. We were blown away by the great response, including some wicked reviews and a Sports GOTY nod from Polygon. What we were not ready for however (although were pleasantly surprised by!) was the number of requests along the lines of “I’m in Europe, I love baseball, and I want your freakin’ game”. So let’s address that now; SMB is headed your way on 1st April.

Super Mega Baseball packs a hilarious but hardcore game of hardball. It’s unlicensed which means we’ve been able to have a ton of fun with the characters and stadiums (and throw in some parody when necessary!). Our number one goal from the beginning was to nail a set of gameplay mechanics that make for a solid solo and local coop/competitive experience. That means accessible, but with subtleties that add depth over time. Here are the goods:

SMB_SCEE_BLOG_SCREENSHOT_01

Up to four player couch co-op/competitive: In addition to solo play, you’ve got head-to-head, 2v1, 2v2, or co-op vs the CPU. When you’ve got a teammate, you’ll be alternating batting/running each at-bat, and alternating pitching/fielding each inning. This means everyone’s involved and you’ll have to be on your toes. There’s a per-user, sliding difficulty setting called Ego, meaning you’ll be able to easily setup a close game between friends of any skill levels.

Ultra responsive, blazing fast gameplay: In a nutshell, you’re going to spend most of your time telling your players what to do. All the cinematic stuff is skippable and you’ll be able to cut through a nine-inning game in 20 minutes. The basic controls are ultra-easy to learn, but you’ll need to master jumping, diving, wall-catches, power-swings, and cut-off plays to properly dominate your friends.

Full batting/pitching stats: Baseball is all about statistics; the ones you expect to see are all in the game.

Realistic simulation and physics: Don’t be fooled by the light-hearted/comical presentation; the fundamentals of the sport of baseball are here, and if you’re not massively familiar with the rules of baseball, you will be after playing SMB.

SMB_SCEE_BLOG_SCREENSHOT_02

Leveling system: You’ll tally up Starpoints for hits/strikeouts/catches during each game, level-up once you have enough, and then hire staff to train and coach your players, boosting their abilities. Then, use that jacked up team to win at higher difficulties (and post higher leaderboard scores than your friends!).

Team customisations: Customise the look of your squad to your hearts delight. You can make as many aesthetic adjustments as you want. Laaaaadies… are in the house (and the game).

Baseball’s popularity may be concentrated in a select handful of countries, but regardless of where you’re at or what level of familiarity you have with baseball, I can assure you we’ve designed SMB to be both an accessible gateway to a wonderful sport, and a fun and pure video game in its own right. Just as Shooting a Monster in the Face is a solid premise and provides an excellent underlying rule set for a video game, Smashing a Ball Over a Fence With a Stick is an equally wonderful and glorious premise!

If you have any questions, let me know in the comments below, and please stay in touch via SMB’s Twitter feed or Facebook page. Cheers!

Steampunk puzzler Ironcast announced for PS4

Hello there, PlayStation fans! My name’s Daniel Leaver and I’m the lead designer at Dreadbit – a games developer from Guildford, England. I’m a long time PlayStation Blog reader so it’s truly something special to be able to write a few words here today.

I’m proud to present Dreadbit’s debut game for PlayStation 4 - Ironcast!

Whist Ironcast is Dreadbit’s first console game, I’m personally no stranger to PlayStation development. I’d previously worked at Media Molecule as a senior designer for about eight years, helping to craft levels and features for LittleBigPlanet, LittleBigPlanet 2 and more recently Tearaway on PS Vita. However, Ironcast is the game I’ve always dreamt of making!

Battle 1_Screenshot_Ironcast

Ironcast is a game of steampunk mech combat, set in a fictional version of the Victorian era. Inspired by science fiction writers such as H.G. Wells and Jules Verne, Ironcast is set in an exciting alternative history; a time when refined men and women in top hats and bonnets commanded gigantic walking war machines, laying waste to the enemies of the British Empire!

Spire Wireless Telegraph_Screenshot_Ironcast

You’ll take control of a seven metre tall walking vehicle called an Ironcast. You must face off against an invading force of enemy Ironcast in order to defend 1880s Victorian England.

Battles are fought by generating resource nodes which in turn drive the Ironcast’s various weapons and systems. Players must choose how to spend these nodes wisely, either offensively in order to cripple and destroy their opponents, or defensively, if they suspect a barrage of incoming weapons fire is due.

Battle 2_Screenshot_Ironcast

On the surface the game may look like your standard puzzle game, but in action it’s a lot more involved than that. Nodes are collected by linking three or more of the same colour symbol from the grid. Each colour represents a different resource; orange for energy (powering your Ironcast’s shields and defensive systems), purple for ammunition (used to fire your weapons), green to repair the damage sustained in battle and blue to cool down the Ironcast’s engines. They might be amazing machines, but this is steampunk – if technology’s not overheating, you’re not doing it right!

You can only make three matches from the grid per turn, so if you haven’t collected the correct resources from them you won’t be able to activate the systems you may want to, meaning that you’ll need to plan your node collection patterns wisely. Anything less will ensure that you’ll end up as a pile of flaming wreckage!

Hangar_Screenshot_Ironcast

The core of the game is a roguelite campaign, featuring character levelling, numerous mech systems and weapon upgrades and randomised loot and mission content. Players choose their Commander character and Ironcast mech, both coming with unique skills and gameplay modifying abilities. Missions are randomly offered to the player from a selection of 75 unique scenarios, meaning each play-through will be different from the last.

Players also earn Scrap metal from matching yellow nodes and defeating enemies throughout the game. They then spend this Scrap resource on Ironcast upgrades, and constructing weapons and defensive systems, salvaged from the wreckage of their defeated opponents. It’s important that players try to keep ahead of the curve where possible to ensure that they’ll be strong enough to survive the boss encounters.

CommanderAeresPowell_Concept Art

The goal of the campaign is to repel the invasion of enemy forces before they reach the capital, London. Players have nine days (which is the equivalent of nine missions) to prepare themselves before the boss encounter itself, gathering experience points, scrap metal resources and men and women who will help the player combat the enemy Flagship Ironcast.

I thank you all for reading this far. Ironcast is a unique and challenging game. I’m sure you’re going to love it when it launches on PlayStation 4 later this year. Follow us on Twitter @Dreadbitgames and the hashtag #Ironcast for the latest news and developments.

If you have any questions about Ironcast, just ask us in the comments below.

Eccentric puzzle-platformer MonsterBag hits PS Vita next month

Hello world! Here at IguanaBee we have exciting news to share – MonsterBag is about to be in your hands! Now with the good folks at Sony Computer Entertainment, we can share with you our release date. It was difficult for us to wait any longer, but now we can share our game with you on 8th April. Yes, it’s that close!

We know that you’d prefer to see a trailer rather than continue reading about the game, but sadly we didn’t have the time to prepare something for you, so, sorry, this is all we have… Nah, we didn’t want to leave you empty handed at this moment, so we got some help from the talented folks at PlayStation, who helped us put together this launch trailer. Enjoy!

Most of you will be asking, “What’s MonsterBag about?” Well, MonsterBag is a kind of puzzle-platformer (if you think of people as a platform!) action game. The game is about a little blue monster called V and V’s journey to get back to his friend Nia (a charming little girl), passing through places filled with people.

monsterbag side art

But what would you do if you saw a monster approaching you? SMASH IT TO DEATH, of course! You’ll have to help V sneak past people, all the while being aware of where they’re looking and what particular behaviors they have. Don’t worry, he has a card up his sleeve… Well, he has no clothes, but he’s not a powerless monster, he has some telekinetic skills that surely will be useful in more than several occasions.

We’re looking forward to having MonsterBag in your hands (well in your PS Vita, in your hands). Making an indie video game company from a Latin American country has been quite a challenge, but our passion has helped us cope with all the challenges that have arisen. We (Cristian González and Daniel Winkler) love what we do, and so do all the talented folks that joined us along the way, particularly David Rioseco, Glenn Lazo and Moises Aguilera, as well as Ronny Antares, and his PowerUp Music team.

We hope you’ll love MonsterBag as much as we do! We’ve put all our heart into this story with some new and unusual ways to play so we hope that all our efforts will bring you more than one smile, some tears and a lot of ‘pull your hair out’ moments :D Finally, we want to deeply thank our friends at PlayStation for believing in us and in MonsterBag!

So prepare your PS Vitas for 8th April when it launches on PS Store for €8.99. See what a team of crazy fellows from this thin, but beautiful country called Chile can offer!

Cheers!

Bloodborne arrives exclusively on PS4 this week – watch the launch video

The wait is nearly over – Bloodborne arrives in stores this week! Watch our special launch video above, and read on for a special message from game director Hidetaka Miyazaki:

To all Bloodborne fans,

As FromSoftware’s first game for the PlayStation 4, development of Bloodborne was not without its ups and downs. But thanks to the tireless efforts of the development team, and the support of all of the staff at Sony Computer Entertainment, we somehow made it to the finish line.

Bloodborne takes place in an old city called Yharnam, where a sickness called the “scourge of the beast” turns humans into malformed beasts. And it is here that Hunters will engage in deadly blood-drenched combat. I hope you all get to enjoy this dark, terror-filled, horrific experience.

Bloodborne Director, Hidetaka Miyazaki

Bloodborne is out tomorrow (and on Friday in UK/Ireland), on store shelves and via PlayStation Store, exclusively for PlayStation 4. Don’t forget, you can also download the custom Bloodborne audio mode, tuned specifically for the game, to your PlayStation headset through the PlayStation 4 Headset Companion App.

As a special treat just for launch, please enjoy these two music tracks: one from the game, and one from the TV commercial.

First up is “Cleric Beast” from the Bloodborne original soundtrack, composed by Tsukasa Saitoh.

The second music track is the full length song Hunt You Down by The Hit House Featuring Ruby Friedman, featured in the Bloodborne TV commercial.

See you in Yharnam, hunters.

How to survive your first 24 hours with Bloodborne

Psst… Bloodborne is out this week! And if you know anything about FromSoftware, you know they don’t make cakewalks. To give you a head start, PlayStation’s internal teams joined forces to provide a list of crucial tips. Enjoy, and leave your advice in the comments below!

Character development

Choose carefully: Spend time selecting your “Origin” during character customization. Selecting the one that fits your play style will save you time and Blood Echoes in the long run. — Julie Abdalla, SCEA Test Analyst

Stats 101: Vitality grants more health and is always helpful. Endurance and Strength are good bets if you want to maximize your melee, while Bloodtinge boosts the effectiveness of your firearms. Whichever play style you prefer, pick a few key stats and pump them. Don’t spread yourself thin!

Blood money: Blood Echoes are your sole form of currency, both for purchasing items and leveling up. If you die (and you will), you’ll lose them… but if you can get back to your body without dying again, you can reclaim them. Look for a puddle on the ground or an enemy with glowing eyes.

Dress to kill: As soon as possible, save up Blood Echoes to buy the Yharnam attire from the shop in Hunter’s Dream. This new garb will greatly increase your defense and help keep you breathing early in the game.

Invest for success: Use Blood Stone Shards to “reinforce” (aka upgrade) a weapon’s damage. You can do this in the workshop located in Hunter’s Dream. Once you’ve chosen a good melee weapon, reinforce it as much as possible as early as you can. The extra damage will make your life so much easier.

You are the weapon: It’s best to stick with one weapon and learn its intricacies — how far it reaches, how long it takes to swing, which buttons yield the best attacks. For example, the Kirkhammer starts as a humble sword, but tap L1 and it transforms into a mighty hammer that can eradicate mobs of beasts with one swing.

Smart shopping: Quicksilver Bullets are hugely overpriced in Hunter’s Dream, so make runs through Central Yharnam and scoop them off the snipers instead. Save your Blood Echoes for Molotovs and other, more exotic purchases.

Insightful mind: Your Insight level is shown in the upper right-hand corner of the screen under your Blood Echoes. It indicates the depth of inhuman knowledge you have attained, and you can spend a point to call in other players for help. Pay close attention to your Insight level — things around you may change as it increases… — Kumi Yuasa, SCEA Bloodborne Producer

Combat strategies

The best defence: Bloodborne rewards a smart offense. After you take damage, for a few seconds you can regain lost health by landing blows on enemies. In tough combat scenarios, it may pay to launch into a berserker rage and earn back every possible drop of life.

Lock and load: You can click R3 to lock onto a foe, and you’ll circle strafe around it. You’ll need to lock on to throw items or fire projectiles. Locking on isn’t always the best choice, though. When fighting multiple foes or certain bosses, you may want to preserve your freedom of movement. Generally, it’s best to lock on when you’re facing one tough enemy, such as a Wolf Beast or Brick Troll.

Gun stunner: Bloodborne’s firearms inflict little direct damage. Instead, use them to stun enemies and set up devastating Visceral Strikes. Lock on to an enemy (click R3) and press L2 to fire. A well-timed shot, landed just as the enemy is attacking, will briefly stun it. Then, at close range, quickly tap R1 to inflict a deadly Visceral Strike. This will kill most beasts in just one hit, and even works against many bosses. Practice this and you’ll be unstoppable.

Free ammo: Heading into a crucial battle and need Quicksilver Bullets? No worries. Tap Up on the directional pad and, at the cost of a little life, you’ll snag five free rounds. If you’re quick, you can even regain that lost life by slashing at a nearby foe.

Drink up: Blood Vials are quite common in Yharnam, so don’t skimp on healing. Tap Triangle whenever you’re not at maximum health — yes, even during a fight.

Meet the Molotov: Early on, Molotovs will be your best friend. They’re affordable, inflict significant damage, and will allow you to defeat enemies that are much tougher than you. Combine them with the Oil Urns to inflict grave damage.

Hit and run: The lunging attack (Up on the left analog stick and R2, simultaneously) is a powerful move you’ll want to use again and again. Use it to land the first strike on a dangerous enemy or to deliver a final blow from afar.

Wear and tear: Inflicting less melee damage than normal? Your weapon is probably in disrepair. Keep your weapons in tip-top shape by visiting the workshop in Hunter’s Dream.

Flame on: The torch illuminates dark spaces, and can inflict decent damage up close. But when equipped, it will also keep certain, dangerous enemy types at bay. It’s a useful tool for any Hunter.

Trap ‘em: Try to lure large enemies into smaller pathways where they cannot easily get through, and then perform thrusting attacks to kill them from relative safety. — Brandon Buchholtz, SCEA Test Analyst

Build a combo: Hops and rolls count as a “move” in a combo. Try dodge rolling and following that up with L1 or R1. You’ll attack in a unique way. — Brian Dunn, SCEA Brand Marketing

Tips for central Yharnam

Fear the wolves: Wolf Beasts spell trouble. You’ll first encounter a pair of them on the Greatn Bridge in Yharnam en route to the Cleric Beast. Throw a Pebble to lure one out, then fight it one-on-one, being mindful to hop backwards before it attacks. If that doesn’t work, melt ‘em with Molotovs.

Troll the Trolls: A Brick Troll can be a handful. Early in the game, don’t mess around: Toss two Molotovs and be on your way. If you don’t have that luxury, use lock on (click R3) and work your way around to its backside. Land a blow or two, then get out of the way. Wash, rinse, repeat.

Stone’s throw: In Central Yharnam, the Hunter mobs crowded around the fire pit can easily overwhelm you. Throw a Pebble to lure one away and deal with him Mano y mano. — Brandon Buchholtz, SCEA Test Analyst

Cut corners: Explore the environment to find secret paths and routes, and be sure to unlock doors and gates to create shortcuts. When you need to return later to pick up your dropped Blood Echoes, shortcuts may be a big time saver! — Kumi Yuasa, SCEA Bloodborne Producer

Watch the windows: Keep an eye out for illuminated lanterns near doors or windows. These signify that you can interact with an NPC inside. Some of these NPCs will issue side quests. — Tommy Garry and Colin Fannon, SCEA Test Analyst

A conversation with Bloodborne creator Hidetaka Miyazaki

Okay, let’s make this 100% clear. When it comes to the Souls series – and the work of creator Hidetaka Miyazaki in general – I’m a proud, unabashed fanboy and I’ll happily assault anyone who comes within shouting distance with irrefutable testament. Duly, with From Software’s latest effort – the deliciously dark action epic Bloodborne – just a few days out from launch, I’ve got one last chance to jump on my sandbox and bang the drum ;)

Last week, Miyazaki-san was kind enough to put aside a little of his valuable time to answer a few questions about his eagerly anticipated PS4 exclusive. Read on to find out what he had to say – and you need not worry about spoilers. Like so many of you, I’m doing my upmost to ensure I know as little as possible about the gruesome treats that lie in wait when I boot up my copy of the game next Friday.

6C6A9511_1

The Souls titles were never specifically labelled ‘horror’, but I can think of few other games that fill me with such a sense of fear and dread while playing. It looks like you’re taking that ball and running with it in Bloodborne – just watching the trailers makes me incredibly anxious…

Hidetaka Miyazaki: There are several reasons why you need a sense of horror in the world, especially with Bloodborne, which has a more chilling world view than Souls. It’s not like horror is something we specifically go for, but it’s important to have that sense of fear and terror because it directly ties into the player overcoming that and enhancing their sense of achievement.

“To create a game world that is always kind to players – that’s not how I see the real world.”

At the same time, my personal view is that the world we live in can be a harsh and unkind place. To create a game world that is always kind to players – that’s not how I see the real world. Whether it be nature or society, it’s often a harsh and unkind environment – so that translates into my games.

I know there are some who prefer the ‘hub’ system from Demon’s Souls but for me, one of the most memorable aspects of your recent work was the extraordinary world-building of Dark Souls – how the game’s locations all linked up like some grand, intricate work of origami. How have you approached Bloodborne’s map design?

Hidetaka Miyazaki: I wanted to take the best of both approaches. So every area is linked in one way or another much like the first Dark Souls, but you also have a hub system like Demon’s Souls.

The world itself is a painted world in several respects – like Dark Souls – but essentially each area is still seamlessly connected. At the same time, to access each point, there are central hubs that act as warp points, and to reach new points, you still have the hub which also acts as a refuge as well. I wanted to combine the best of these elements so that you’d be able to easily go to areas you’ve already discovered.

Since launch, the stature of Demon’s Souls and Dark Souls has grown and grown, and they now inhabit pretty rarefied air, comfortably sitting among the all-time greats. How do you deal with having such an obsessive and passionate fanbase?

Hidetaka Miyazaki: First of all, I’m incredibly happy to have these fans. I’d be lying if I didn’t feel pressure to meet their expectations, but I get a lot of enjoyment reading and hearing what they have to say.

For these people to put so much time into my games and really discuss things that I’ve created with such passion… I’ll go online and enjoy reading what they have to say. Of course, sometimes there are things that are not so enjoyable to read – but even taking that on board, over all I take great pleasure in their comments. As a creator it’s such a valuable resource, to listen to their honest feedback and think about what game I’m going to make next. You couldn’t go out there and pay people money to put in the hours that these people do!

When I went to PlayStation Experience in the USA at the end of last year, there was a Q&A panel there with the players, and I realised the level of passion that people have.

ATT00005

Does it bother you that people are so fixated on your games’ perceived high level of difficulty, rather than other aspects of the experience?

Hidetaka Miyazaki: It’s not something I find frustrating. I do understand why people ask about it a lot, but I’m happy that people are fascinated by it – in that respect I don’t mind being repeatedly asked about difficulty. It’s something that I find enjoyable to discuss.

As a game creator – or a creator of anything – for people to be fascinated and ask questions and be curious about what I’m making, that’s something that can’t be taken for granted and I’m very grateful for that.

Often to the detriment of my social life, I’ve found Souls games to be hugely replayable, relinquishing new secrets every time I return to them. How are you approaching New Game + in Bloodborne?

Hidetaka Miyazaki: The actual set-up is essentially the same, but if you play it I think you’ll see that the feel is a bit different to Souls. There is that replayability in the same form for Bloodborne as there was in Dark Souls, but it’s a different game, so even if the feature is similar, you might have a different experience with New Game + or New Game ++ – or however many times you choose to replay.

“I’d like gamers to challenge themselves and see what they can get out of New Game+”

A simple example is that there is no defensive style of play in Bloodborne. That starts to be more apparent the more New Game + playthroughs you go through. So a gamer can experience a different taste of New Game + compared to a Souls game. I’d like gamers to challenge themselves and see what they can get out of New Game +.

There’s been a little consternation among Souls fans on the web at the suggestion that Bloodborne won’t feature quite so many weapons as in the Souls games. Can you clarify exactly how the weapon system works in Bloodborne?

Hidetaka Miyazaki: In terms of how many physical weapons there are, the amount is less than in a Souls game, but that’s to some extent a decision made due to the game design.

The weapons transform – so one weapon will have various uses and strategies that you can implement. You can also customise your weapon with Blood Gems. There are different types and you can slot in up to three at a time. One gem might have you use less stamina per swing, for example.

You can have many different combinations – so actually the amount of weapons in Souls is absorbed in Bloodborne by this customisation element and how someone can tailor a weapon to how they want to use it. In a way, the variety is still there, but it’s absorbed down on a customisation level, rather than in the quantity of actual weapons, much more than in Souls.
