New Bloodborne video shows Darkbeast boss fight

Hello, PlayStation Blog readers. This is Kitao, PR Manager for Bloodborne in Japan. Today I would like to introduce a brand new boss enemy from the game.

Just like in Demon’s Souls, Bloodborne will feature many boss enemies of all shapes and sizes, and there will be a variety of ways to defeat them. So I think you will find that the gameplay in Bloodborne is rich and diverse.

I am happy to introduce a new boss character called “Darkbeast.” This electric beast emerges from giant skeletal remains. With lightning coursing through its body, it bombards the player with its erratic and off-speed movements. You can check out this beast in action in the video just released as part of IGN First.

“Darkbeast

A malformed beast enveloped in blue lightning.

With a long body made of only bones, and a wrinkle-covered skull, people say this beast must be very old, very ancient.

Or perhaps, it is a descendent of the city of the plague of beasts.”

This marks the last post covering content from IGN First’s month-long coverage of Bloodborne, but we have more in store for you before the game launches on 25th March, so please stay tuned.

Ruthless platformer La-Mulana EX lands on PS Vita next week

Hello, fellow explorers! It’s been a while but, finally, I’m happy to say that thanks to our friends at Rising Star Games, the western release of La-Mulana EX on PlayStation Vita is set for 4th March! The game is already out in Japan and the response from Japanese fans has been overwhelming, so I hope you’re all looking forward to playing it soon too.

If you’ve played it before, the idea of diving into La-Mulana once again will be very exciting, especially as PlayStation Vita means you can go exploring whenever and wherever you like. However, other people might not have even heard of La-Mulana – what a tragedy! That’s why I thought I should give a quick introduction to the game, before introducing the improvements and additions that make La-Mulana EX the ultimate version…

What is La-Mulana EX?

I’m glad you asked! La-Mulana is the original Archeological Ruins Exploration Action game, and a throwback to the days when games tested you to your very limit. First created by developer NIGORO in 2005, players use their skills and wits to explore the ruins and discover the ultimate treasure without falling foul of the monsters and traps in their way. It might look like a straightforward Metroidvania-style platformer, but it’s not just an action game. You’ll also need to solve riddles and keep mental notes to make progress, so it’s much more!

Of course, we’re thinking of La-Mulana EX as the ultimate version of La-Mulana – as the blog title says, the EX stands for Extra! In developing the game, we’ve worked with NIGORO to make some important tweaks that not just tighten up the game’s puzzle logic but also enhance the overall experience. We also added new material that everyone from new players to dedicated archeologists could enjoy; it was a lot of work, but the results are worth the effort!

What’s new in La-Mulana EX?

For starters, the new Monster Bestiary is where you can check out details of every monster you slay and character you meet. It’s useful to read, but you’ll also get to see some wonderful art for the creatures in the ruins. We were amazed when we saw how much previously unseen art there was for La-Mulana, so this was the perfect way to show it off!

We’ve also tweaked the gameplay. La-Mulana lets you go almost anywhere you like from the start, which can be a bit daunting to some. When we first started developing La-Mulana EX, the plan was to have two modes: the original version for returning players and a revised adventure that was more accessible for new players. However, as time went on, we decided to bring both versions together in a way that improves the experience for everyone.

Of course, this doesn’t mean we’ve made La-Mulana EX easier! Trust me, it’s still just as challenging as ever – it’s just also more accessible for those who might be too scared to enter the ruins otherwise. The signposting is improved, some of the puzzles and obstacles have been altered slightly (don’t rely on your memories if you’ve played the game before!), it’s now possible to undo the ‘Hard Mode’ curse if you want to and so on. We’ve even added more languages (French and German, on top of English, Spanish and Russian) and improved the old translations, so now even more people can enjoy La-Mulana than ever before!

Got any tips, please?

Absolutely! Here are some to get you started:

  • Read every stone tablet you find. The clues to solving the ruin’s puzzles are there for you to unravel!

  • Collect the Shell Horn and listen for it sounding. That means something has changed in the ruins for you to find.

  • If you hit a dead-end or meet an enemy you can’t beat, don’t be afraid to run away and explore somewhere else.

  • I know it’s old-fashioned, but please read the e-manual! Seriously, read it. Especially page 26.

I hope you all enjoy La-Mulana EX when it arrives on PlayStation Vita! And if you have any questions in the meantime, please put them in the comments below and I’ll do my best to answer them. Thank you!

Final Fantasy XIV racks up 4 million users, celebrates with free log-in week

18 years ago, Final Fantasy VII was released on the PlayStation. I have played more of that game than I cared to admit to my parents back in the day. “Just let me find the next save point!” was a constant source of family joy in the eternal fight over the television (yes, we really only had one telly!)

Now an ingenious visionary in Eorzea was inspired enough to find a nice, quiet spot in a patch of cosy desert (sound familiar?) and build his own version of the infamous amusement park, the Manderville Gold Saucer!

goldsaucer_poster2

I don’t really want to know what it costs to run the aircon the whole time, but it seems to be worth it, because, as detailed earlier this week, one of the most requested features has finally found its way into Final Fantasy XIV .

What? You’re not playing FFXIV anymore? No problem! To celebrate 4 million FFXIV adventurers, for over a week, from today Friday 27th February to Monday 9th March, you will be able to log into your old account, completely free!

Usually, we only do free login weekends. But the recent jump to 4 million registered accounts and the opening of one of the most awaited features was reason enough for us to extend that to almost two weeks!

Have a look at everything on offer and decide for yourself if the Manderville Gold Saucer bears its name rightfully. Hop on a Chocobo and steer it through the rigorous race track, or start collecting your Triple Triad cards to conquer every enemy that crosses your path.

Of course, there is no real money involved in the Gold Saucer – you spend and earn Gil only.

You’ve never played FFXIV before? Well then, just check out the free trial!

See for yourself if Eorzea manages to tickle your fancy, along with the millions of players that call it their home. As we are nearing the end of the A Realm Reborn storyline before the release of Heavensward in a couple months, there is so much to explore that you definitely won’t be bored.

Just follow these links!

And now, please excuse me, while I prepare myself to become the Square Enix Europe Chocobo Racing Master!

Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare’s Havoc DLC out now on PS4, PS3

Greetings, PlayStation nation! I am beyond excited to announce that Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare’s Havoc DLC has arrived on PS4 and PS3, heralding the arrival of Exo Zombies, four new multiplayer maps, and the AE4 directed energy assault rifle.

Let’s kick things off with Exo Zombies. With a celebrity cast including John Malkovich (In the Line of Fire, RED, Burn After Reading), Bill Paxton (Aliens, Titanic, Edge of Tomorrow), Rose McGowan (Planet Terror, Scream), and Jon Bernthal (Fury, The Wolf of Wall Street), Exo Zombies takes a new spin on the zombie survival experience.

16647976122_374f61ff30_o

As four Atlas Corporation employees battling deadly hordes infected by a DNA bioweapon, players must survive the onslaught and unravel the mysteries of the outbreak in Exo Zombies’ standalone story. But these aren’t your run of the mill undead – armed with exoskeletons and unpredictable mutations, the enemies in Exo Zombies are faster and more lethal than ever before.

16026678394_241e4aa089_o

For a little friendly competition, there are also four new multiplayer maps to dive into:

Core

Fight through the ruins of a nuclear fusion plant that features a both narrow pathways for close-quarters combat and long sightlines for long-range players. Rack up enough points and unlock the map-based scorestreak, which unleashes a swarm of decontamination drones to take out your enemies.

16441684137_800579b9e1_o

Sideshow

Set in an abandoned inn beneath Devil’s Tower in Wyoming, Sideshow’s wide-open exteriors and rooftops are prime for snipers and getting the jump on the competition. At certain points in a match, the clown inn’s sign may tip its hat and start raining down a barrage of explosives with rainbow smoke trails, which you can pick up and lob at other players.

16647568131_7fe35f9980_o

Drift

High in the Rocky Mountains, you’ll find Drift—a picturesque snow-covered ski resort. Its three primary lanes keep the pace high and the action focused, but players can use a number of elevated vantages and a rotating carousel in the center of the map to maintain a competitive edge. Don’t get too comfortable, though, as an avalanche may occur unexpectedly, taking out anyone in its path.

16029078493_51b2899d25_o

Urban

Those that enjoy fast, frenetic matches will love Urban. Taking on a smaller, three-lane design, Urban is perfect for SMGs and close-range weapons. However, new pathways and routes can emerge as the futuristic mega structure goes into lockdown, so watch your back.

16029078433_fd96c123cc_o

Finally, those that pick up Havoc will unlock the AE4 directed energy assault rifle and its Widowmaker variant, which Season Pass owners gained early access to in January. Like its heavier sibling, the EM1, the AE4 fires bursts of energy, but performs like a lightweight assault rifle, making it quicker on the draw but offering infinite ammunition – just make sure you don’t let it overheat.

For an in-depth look at all that’s included in Havoc, check out the Activision Games Blog. Otherwise, I look forward to seeing everyone online!

Get ready. If you think you’ve explored every hidden corner of Kyrat’s massive open world, the latest Far Cry 4 DLC is about to prove you wrong as you uncover Valley of the Yetis. Set in the aftermath of a helicopter crash, players are once more cast as Ajay Ghale, but this time he’s up against an otherworldly foe. Check out the trailer above.

Beyond the supernatural twist and beasts, Ajay will have to contend with a group of violent cultists, whose regular assaults will require an arsenal of weapons and fortifications to fend off. The enemy is after a secret that lies in the heart of the Valley, and as Ajay discovers their motives, he’ll have to fight a mystic evil that runs deeper than anything he’s seen before.

But he doesn’t have to do it alone!

For those who enjoyed open-world co-op in the main game, this DLC allows players to go beyond just free roam. The entire Valley of the Yetis campaign can be played with a friend, taking on the role of Hurk. It means you get more fun, more anecdotes, more bro-ship.

5 tips for the perfect speed run in PS4 platformer Chariot

Hello everyone! I’m Laurent Mercure, community manager at Frima. Last autumn, we launched our latest game, Chariot, on PS4, and we were thrilled to have the PlayStation community embrace it!

With Chariot, we wanted to make a game that was accessible and that players of different skill levels could play together and have a good time. My colleague Phil explained his vision in his last post, titled Chariot, Bringing Gamers Together.

However, being seasoned gamers ourselves, we always envisioned a more hardcore side for Chariot as well. We wanted to give skilled players a worthy challenge to tackle. This is the idea that spawned the Speedrun mode for each level.

Speedrunning levels in Chariot and scoring the gold medal isn’t easy. Even the timers in level 1-1 are pretty unforgiving. We know that a lot of dedicated PlayStation players are trophy hunters, so I decided to give you a few tricks to help you get the Greased Lightning trophy (Getting gold in all 25 levels).

1. Always be winding up

Don’t just drag the Chariot around with your rope at full length. Keeping the rope short will help you make certain jumps, while winding up will allow you to speed up the Chariot, even on a flat surface. Keep a distance from the Chariot, and then attach your rope and wind up while walking. The Chariot will gain more speed than your character, so you can jump on it while it passes and just ride it. When walking uphill, try jumping ahead of the Chariot every time you wind up to speed up your ascension.

2. The ropes are elastic

The royal engineers used a little bit of rubber while designing the Chariot’s ropes. Try using this to your advantage. When the weight of the Chariot feels like it’s dragging you down, try playing with the length of the rope a bit. If you wind it up rapidly after it reaches its maximum length, the Chariot will be launched upward, making it easier to get from platform to platform. Remember to anchor your character when you do that, however, otherwise you might have to start all over again.

3. Cut through the walls

In some levels, the regular path has you taking the long way around to get the momentum necessary to break a brittle wall. If you’re equipped with the Repulsor, the Canary or even the Sprint Boots, you can cut directly through these walls and save a huge amount of time. This advice is device-dependent however, which brings up the next tip.

4. Choose your gadget wisely

Some levels are mostly flat, some levels are all about going up, and other levels are mazes riddled with shortcuts. It’s crucial that you choose your gadget accordingly. The Sprint Boots may seem like the most pertinent gadget for a speedrun, but having more raw speed may end up causing you to fall off narrow ledges. In levels with a lot of death rails, the Repulsor can increase your speed. On levels with a lot of platforming, an Attractor double jump can let you skip entire areas. Trial and error will teach you which gadget is the best for each level.

5. Upgrade those gadgets

I kept the most important tip for the end. You absolutely must upgrade your gadgets, as they will have a major impact on your speedrun times. Not only will an upgraded gadget have a greater effect, but its cooldown will be reduced, allowing you to use it more often. That’s true for all the gadgets except the Peg… you don’t really need to upgrade the Peg for speedruns.

If you keep these five tips in mind, getting a gold medal in every level (except maybe the hidden level) will be a breeze. If you’re the competitive type, though, getting the gold isn’t the end goal; you can compete with other players on the online leaderboards. There are already some pretty impressive times on the PlayStation leaderboards!

If these tricks got you interested in speedrunning Chariot, take note that we’re launching a worldwide co-op Speedrun contest today, and the stakes are pretty high. You can find out more about the competition directly on our website. We will be streaming on our Twitch channel this evening between 10.00pm and 12.00am GMT to show you a couple more tricks.

Lastly, if you’re in the Boston area next week, we’ll be at PAX East in booth 10057. Come say hi and show us your speedrunning skills!

Thanks for reading!

PS4 platformer Shiftlings launches next month

Hey everyone! We’re only a couple of weeks away from the arrival of Shiftlings on PS4 on 11th March, and to celebrate, we thought we’d share with you a few of the devious inspirations behind the creation of some of the game’s various worlds and bonus levels!

First off, we designed 50 levels spread over five unique worlds. What you don’t know is there are also five additional, unlockable levels for you to conquer. These bonus levels are a completely different experience, if you manage to actually unlock them.

Event Horizon

We wanted to achieve a hectic and wildly fun level with constant movement. So we decided that you would have to ride an elevator through the entire level while avoiding obstacles. Naturally, you’ll also have to avoid getting pushed or pulled off of your platform. Of course we also just had to have this platform carried by a giant robot of doom along with a sea of fire waiting for you should you make a slight misstep.

Event Horizon Bonus Level

Hyperactivia

In Hyperactivia we introduce gravity beams and springs which can be particularly fun if you have both players being bounced around while switching sizes. To add to the chaos, you’re being chased by a giant spinning flame wheel of death. Think of it like an extreme game of tag.

Earth 2.0 Bonus

Veraville

We haven’t shown this level to anyone yet, are you excited? Get your spurs because Western ways are the flavor of the month here, partner! In this level, you will fire yourself out of a cannon onto conveyor belts that are moving in all directions. You will have to shift sizes of the characters accordingly so going down the wrong path does not have to mean inevitable death (or does it?).

Earth 2.0

This should feel like home! Here we have hinged platforms that will slow down your progress to a dead stop if you don’t know what you’re doing. Every time you swap sizes or jump, look out for swinging platforms. In the interest of hilarious mistaken deaths, the player must ride an elevator down to the exit while controlling the platforms to block hazards and find a safe path… or else!

Sherbert

Disappearing platforms are another fun way to halt your inexorable progress to beating our game. Think you’re safe on a platform? Oops, there it goes. This level is a marathon of disappearing platforms where you have to keep moving to avoid coming down with a serious case of the deadsies. Oh yeah, by the way, did we mention you’ll be chased by a giant bank of laser beams?

We sincerely hope that you enjoy all the work and ideas we put into Shiftlings, even when you’re being zapped for the hundredth time or are staring down yet another maniacal robot. We know it will create a fun and challenging experience for you! See you on the flip-side and thanks for reading!

We’ve made it! Unlike all New Year’s resolutions made since the dawn of mankind, we have actually reached the goal we set ourselves, and hit 1,000,000 downloads! High five everybody (*^▽^)/\(^▽^*)

From Thursday 26th February until Wednesday 11th March, we’re just going to give you free stuff to help with spirit summoning, growth and rental and all the hard work you’re putting in:

  • 10,000 Summoning Stones (on Feb 26th)

  • 10,000 Spirit Points (on Feb 26th)

  • 40 Destiny Orbs (20 Orbs on Feb 26th and 20 Orbs on March 5th)

DoS_Joker_Light

We have also invited a few friends over (it’d be rude not to) for the “Reincarnation” raid event, which will take place between 5th March and 1st April. So as not to crowd the place too much, a different Raid boss will appear each day of the week so please add these in your schedule:

DoS_Reincarnation_main800_en

  • Satan (Dark) on Mondays

  • Ra (Fire) on Tuesdays

  • Gitchi Manitoxu (Water) on Wednesdays

  • Shakyamuni (Wood) on Thursdays

  • Bonten (Metal) on Fridays

  • Osiris (Earth) on Saturdays

  • Bichuten (Light) on Sundays

  • The Final Boss, Heaven’s Gate (?), will appear when certain conditions are met

Finally, and to make it clear that we are indeed a very generous bunch, we are increasing the chances of gaining SR spirits not by two, not by three, not even by four but by five times! So not only will you be able to acquire rare spirits from other regions through Advanced Summons, but the chances to gain SR spirits across all regions through Advanced Summons will be multiplied by five.

*Note that this does not apply to Neo World Summons.

SR_Shakya_EN

That’s it for now. Get busy raiding and see you all soon.

New cars and features available in today’s Gran Turismo 6 update

Hi everyone, today see’s the launch of another great update for Gran Turismo 6 with new cars, features and more being rolled out.

Read on for more details on what you can expect to see when you boot up GT6 today…

Vision Gran Turismo – MINI

The collection of Vision Gran Turismo cars continues to grow with the release of the brand new “MINI Clubman Vision Gran Turismo”.

Once the update has completed installation you can purchase the car from the [Vision GT] option within the [CARS] section in “My Home”. However, you can also get the car by completing a lap (regardless of the lap time) in the new Seasonal Event – hurry though, this opportunity is only available for a limited time.

MINI_Clubman_Vision_Gran_Turismo_Sketch03

New track: Mid-Field Raceway

The popular, original track from previous Gran Turismo’s makes a comeback in a new and improved version. This high speed circuit is built on a mountain landscape full of inclines and descents. Made tougher by its famous grade separated crossing where the direction of the lap circle changes, and its long flat out sections and mid to high speed corners – this is a true challenge for all GT fans.

New feature: B-Spec Mode

Launched today, the “B-Spec” mode (where an AI driver can race on your behalf) is now available in all Career Mode race events. You can use B-Spec for those races that you might find difficult to complete such as some of the longer endurance races, or maybe you just want to sit back and enjoy watching the race. You can select [B-Spec] from the Quick Menu displayed before the start of an event races of [Career Mode].

Additional updates

  • “Paint” options expanded: The [Paint] options have been expanded and it is now possible to paint the custom rear wings. In addition, the option [Select from an already painted colour.] has been added to the Paint menu to make it easier to paint the body and the wings with the same colour.

  • Additional cars available to paint: It is now possible to paint the body of the “Mazda LM55 Vision Gran Turismo” and the “Chevrolet 2X Vision Gran Turismo”.

  • Other improvements and adjustments: The steering wheel controller force feedback has been weakened for the Red Bull X Series Fan Car.

  • It is now possible to view the content of the Seasonal Events from the Community features available on gran-turismo.com

For more details on each of the above features, please refer to the online manual on gran-turismo.com. Happy racing!

The Evil Within’s first DLC expansion detailed in new trailer

For many that have completed The Evil Within , the mysteries surrounding Sebastian’s partner, Juli Kidman, are among the most discussed plotlines in the game. These questions (and new questions… hehe) will arise in Part 1 of Kidman’s DLC adventure, The Assignment.

Taking the role of Kidman, The Assignment features an increased focus on stealth gameplay mechanics as you untangle the secrets of what happened to her and untangle the truth behind her connection with Mobius. Introducing new enemies and gameplay tactics, The Assignment sets the stage for the concluding chapter of Kidman’s Adventure, The Consequence, releasing later this Spring.

Twitter image

The Evil Within: The Assignment can also be purchased separately for £6.99/€9.99 on Wednesday 11th March on PlayStation 3 and PlayStation 4. Watch the trailer above, and for an extended look at gameplay, “follow” Twitch.TV/Bethesda and tune in on Monday, March 9 at 4pm est.

To save on all three DLCs planned for The Evil Within – you can purchase the game’s Season Pass on the PlayStation Store – either on PlayStation 3 or PlayStation 4. In addition to The Assignment and The Consequence, this package will also feature content surrounding the safe pick for everyone’s favourite villain, The Keeper, in DLC #3: The Executioner.
