The Summer Sale is well and truly underway and while you’ve probably already heard about some of the more recent big-name releases getting considerable discounts, such as Horizon Zero Dawn, WipEout Omega Collection and Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare, there’s a whole bunch of awesome titles from earlier in the generation that are going for an absolute song.
So, we’ve rounded up a few of our favourites for your consideration – read on, and let us know what you’ve picked up in this round of discounts.
1. Bloodborne
One of the most highly-rated games this generation, Bloodborne also has a bit of a reputation for being the one of the hardest. Truth be told, it’s not difficult, it just does things a little differently. Take Bloodborne on its own terms and you’re in for a rip-roaring ride of gruesome design, brutal combat and deeply-rewarding exploration – I can’t recommend it enough.
2. Batman: Arkham Knight – Premium Edition
Hands up, who wants a go in the Batmobile? Everybody, right? Well, now’s your chance – not just that, but you can also glide across the Arkham City skyline, beat up local goons and go toe-to-toe with a cadre of Batman’s worse villains. Bag the Premium Edition and you’ll also get a stack of downloadable extras including additional skins and levels.
3. Mirror’s Edge Catalyst
Parkour always looks cool in motion, but the sad reality of is that most of us have neither the courage nor the core-body strength to go leaping around on local high-rises. Thankfully, there’s an alternative: pick up Mirror’s Edge Catalyst this weekend and not only will you get to live the life of a parkour master, but you’ll also get to beat up some baddies and bring down an evil futurist corporation. Who needs deltoids, eh?
4. Star Wars Battlefront – Ultimate Edition
Lightsabers at the ready, it’s time to tear off that cool, adult exterior and indulge your inner nerd. Best of all, you no longer need to chase your siblings around the house hollering ‘vvwom, vwom, vvwom!” as you swing a broom handle at them. Thanks to the lovely chaps at DICE, you can jump into the boots of your favourite Star Wars hero and be doing battle in a galaxy far, far away in a matter of moments (and you can still do your own sound effects if you like).
5. Mortal Kombat XL
If you need to blow off a little steam this weekend, then there a few places more suitable than the Mortal Kombat arena. Why not get together with some friends and take it in turns to beat the stuffing out of one another in the grizzly arenas of Outworld – it’s just the sort of cheeky banter that brings people together, except there are more fatalities. Grab the XL edition and you can even play as Jason Voorhees or The Predator!
6. inFAMOUS Second Son – Legendary Edition
You remember playing super heroes at school and there was always that one kid who decided they had every power? Well, now you can be that kid. In inFAMOUS: Second Son you play as Delsin Rowe, a super human whose special ability is nicking other super humans’ powers. That means you can tear through the streets of Seattle surfing a concrete riptide, raining fireballs down on your opponents and shooting neon projectiles from you finger tips. Just remember: with great power, etc. etc.
7. Dragon Age: Inquisition – Deluxe Edition
A little weekend getaway doesn’t get any more escapist than becoming the grand inquisitor in a faraway fantasy realm peopled by mages, elves and hairy-chested dwarves. If you feel like something a little more laid-back then you could do worse than the lush pastoral climbs and slumbering midnight deserts of Thedas.
8. Ratchet and Clank
An eye-popping recreation of the PS2 original, Ratchet and Clank on PS4 was one of the sleeper hits of last year, bowling over fans and critics alike. If you’ve ever wondered what the hell a Lombax is or why on Earth you should care, it’s never been less costly to find out! Moreover, you’ll get to play with an array of ridiculous guns like The Sheepinator, The Pixelizer and the Groovitron.
9. Rise of the Tomb Raider – 20 Year Celebration
Gaming’s legendary it-girl Lara Croft popped back to the PS4 last year for another grand adventure filled to the brim with ancient history, corporate villainy and, of course, a little casual grave-robbing. If you’re a PS4 Pro owner, Rise of the Tomb Raider Anniversary Edition also comes with a whole batch of extra graphical options that deliver one of the best-looking console games ever – who wouldn’t want to see that?
10. Project CARS
If you’re not one for big guns and silly fun, then why not try taking a sports car for a spin this weekend? Slighty Mad Studio’s crowd-funded racing sim delivers dozens of real-life tracks and hundreds of high-performance cars direct to your living room. All you need to is strap in and get your career on the road. Okay, I’ll stop with the puns now: it’s a great racing sim with bags of content. Like driving? Get it.
11. The Last Guardian
Last year Fumito Ueda’s long-awaited third game finally arrived on PlayStation 4. After almost a decade in development, it was the game that almost didn’t happen. But when it eventually did, it reminded us why Ueda-san is such a respected figure in the industry. Beautiful, poignant and aesthetically wondrous, it’s a game possessing a rare magical quality.
12. Doom
The big daddy of first-person shooters got a fresh new lick of paint last year. Transporting the familiar story of a Martian moon over-run with demons and hell-spawn into 2017, it brought with it lashings of new weapons, upgrades and super-brutal animated take downs. There’s also a chainsaw – in fact, that bears repeating: you get a chainsaw.
13. The Evil Within
With the release of The Evil Within 2 just around corner, there’s never been a better time to get acquainted with horror legend Shinji Mikami’s latest series. Following the mind-bending story of a down-on-his-luck cop drawn into a nightmarish altered reality, The Evil Within has all the lurid tension and stomach-churning design work you’d expect from the man behind Resident Evil and Devil May Cry.
This is just a taste of the huge range of great games discounted this weekend in the Summer Sale. As well as the above, you can also pick up the likes of Horizon Zero Dawn, Hitman, Gravity Rush 2, Nioh, The Last of Us Remastered, Call of Duty Infinite Warfare and Mass Effect Andromeda with discounts of up to 60%*.
Head on over to PlayStation Store now for a full list of discounts and regional pricing.
