4 big PlayStation releases you should look out for this week

This week, frantic multiplayer tank-battler Battlezone welcomes new pilots with the Gold Edition, allowing players with or without a PS VR headset to battle it out in beautiful but deadly landscapes.

But if you prefer to fight it out in the skies, then look out for Guns of Icarus Alliance. Join a four-strong crew sailing through the clouds and work together to take down enemies.

If neither are to your tastes, don’t be alarmed: there’s plenty more to choose from in this week’s PlayStation Store releases.

1. Battlezone Gold Edition

Jump into the cockpit of the most powerful tank in the galaxy. Rebellion’s Battlezone is now playable with or without a VR headset, thanks to a free update for all existing players. Newcomers can pick up the Gold Edition, which includes all the game’s DLC expansions. Take to the battlefield alone or with friends, get stuck into a procedurally-generated campaign, or turn the clocks back with the ’80s-inspired Classic mode.

• Why you should play it: This is how you take an ’80s classic and reboot it for the modern era. Immersive and full of arcade thrills, it’s a tank shooter with a unique identity.

2. Guns of Icarus Alliance

Step into a world ravaged by machines in Guns of Icarus Alliance, the ultimate team-based steampunk airship combat game. Be it as Pilot, Engineer, or Gunner, join one of six factions and participate in epic PvP and PvE battles to dominate the skies. Up to 32 players fight for domination with four players manning each ship.

• Why you should play it: Success or failure depends on teamwork, so the pressure is on to perfect your role – and make sure others are doing theirs!

3. Super Mega Baseball 2

With its convincing physics, fine-tuned baseball simulation and focus on larger-than-life fun, Super Mega Baseball 2 is the perfect game for baseball fans and newcomers alike. Cue some heated matches in co-op or versus, either online or local.

• Why you should play it: Give yourself the ultimate challenge: flick on the ‘Ego’ difficulty and see if you can retire every single batter without any stolen bases, using just one pitcher.

4. City of Brass

Welcome to City of Brass, a first-person rogue-lite adventure created by former BioShock developers. Armed with a scimitar and a whip, become a cunning thief and lash, slash, trick and trap enemies to reach the fabled treasure of the titular city.

• Why you should play it: Fine tune the exact play style you want with the Blessings & Burdens modifiers, with optional tweaks to the difficulty to adjust player health, enemy damage and much more…

See the magnificent 4K remaster of cult fantasy RPG Dragon’s Crown Pro in action

The launch of Dragon’s Crown Pro is right around the corner! Whether you’re a veteran adventurer transferring hundreds of hours of progress from the original, or a fledgling recruit seeking riches and glory, there’s a lot to look forward to in this PS4 remaster on 15th May.

The team at Vanillaware has put in every effort to ensure that Dragon’s Crown Pro maintains the original game’s signature storybook aesthetic while enhancing it with 4K support. You can see the results of their work for yourself in our latest 1080p vs. 4K comparison trailer.

4K support isn’t the only thing that Dragon’s Crown Pro is bringing to the table. The entire soundtrack, composed by legendary video game music composer Hitoshi Sakimoto, has been re-recorded with a live orchestra. This re-recording breathes new life into each track, highlighting the performance of each instrument in the orchestra. Sakimoto has composed breathtaking soundtracks for several Atlus-published Vanillaware games, including Odin Sphere and the upcoming 13 Sentinels: Aegis Rim.

To hear just how much of a difference the orchestral re-recording makes, here’s a comparison of the original and orchestral soundtracks in Dragon’s Crown Pro using the first track in the game, “Dragon’s Crown”:

Helping you stay safe on PSN: PlayStation Network’s Code of Conduct explained

When you first create a PlayStation Network account you’ll be presented with a ‘Code of Conduct’ that we ask you read and agree to before you can continue. While we try and be as clear as possible in that form, we’ve seen a few common questions arise over time. So here are five things you need to know about our code of conduct, and how it’s helping us all stay safe while using PlayStation Network.

1. The code of conduct’s built to make PSN safe and enjoyable for everybody

While you are certainly entitled to think whatever you like, we must ask that players always adhere to the Community Code of Conduct to help us make PSN as safe and enjoyable as we can for everyone. The Code of Conduct applies to everything you say or do on PlayStation Network including but not limited to: the Online ID you create for yourself; the images and text within your profile; anything you create or share within games.

2. Communities can be made private, but they still need to be safe for all

There are certain types of content PlayStation will not allow to be posted to Communities – or anywhere else on PSN for that matter – regardless of how you may have named the community. These include, but are not limited to: abuse, pornography or highly-sexualised content, or any kind of discrimination. PSN is a place that everybody should be able to enjoy.

3. Sorry, gambling is against the rules

The Code of Conduct strictly prohibits using PSN for financial purposes. While we are more than happy for you to help people out in games – be that by sharing helpful tips in a Community or assisting via Share Play -money should not be changing hands. Similarly, we do not allow gambling on our network under any circumstances, even if it’s just between friends.

4. Bans will only happen with good reason, and only after a case has been reviewed.

Bans aren’t instantaneous or automatic. If you violate the Code of Conduct, a human moderator will then review and classify the case. The nature of the offence and your behavioural history is all taken into account.

5. Help the moderation team by giving a brief description when reporting another player

If in doubt, always report. So long as a report is submitted in good faith players shouldn’t have to worry about being punished for reporting bad things.

Still, it helps moderators greatly when players explain their issue in the reporter description field, especially if it’s an obscure issue or something difficult to spot. The only way you’d get in trouble for reporting something is if you reported something innocent multiple times.

The moderation team are there to help you and keep PSN safe for everyone.Removing inappropriate content from PSN is a big part of the job, but an equally important part of the job is educating players on how we expect them to behave – that’s why we always send an email or system message when we find a Code of Conduct violation (and, for that matter, why we’re writing this article!), as the last thing we want is to do is ban any of our players.

That said, we also don’t want any of our players’ experience on PlayStation to be ruined by those not obeying the Code of Conduct, so we take this responsibility seriously and will take action when necessary to keep the network as safe as possible.

Turn your controller into a paintbrush in CoolPaintrVR, coming to PlayStation VR on 9th May

CoolPaintrVR, which allows you to unleash your imagination and paint in a 3D space thanks to PS PVR, will release on 9th May.

How the painting application works

Use your PS Move controller like a brush, selecting from a variety of tools to express your creativity: brushes, tubes, geometric primitive shapes and particle emitters. Additionally – thanks to Wildbit Studios’ own RTSE technology – you can create a 3D model from a hand-drawn shape. It will have its own skeleton that you can manipulate, bone by bone, to help capture your desired stance.

 

CoolPaintrVR is not a game, but it’s so fun to use

We have already seen VR applications of this type succeeding in other platforms, but finally this new type of entertainment arrives on PS VR.

We’ve designed a simple and user friendly interface that any level of artist can play around with. But for those looking for more advanced techniques, don’t worry: we also offer advanced features. Symmetry plane, load reference images, alternate colours randomly with each stroke …you can even export your creation to a USB device so you can load it into third party 3D programs!

Unparalleled accuracy when painting in 3D

Another of the features that makes CoolPaintrVR stand out from other VR experiences is its amazing performance. For us it’s essential to achieve the best user experience, and for that goal we’ve made the most of the hardware, and are proud to have reached a sustained frame per second rate of… 120 fps!

And that frame rate stays constant, even under most intense conditions. That means an unparalleled accuracy with your controller (ultra important to paint perfectly in a 3D space), and throughout our multiple hands-on previews we’ve had no reports of VR sickness.

We have achieved this by developing our own graphic engine – no third party software or middleware. Our engine deals directly with the PS4 SDK.

We think it’s very important to point out that, although CoolPaintrVR will be a full application out of the box, we want to build on its feature set in the future, based on user feedback.

You can share your creations via our website

Lastly, such a powerful creation tool needs a platform that fosters a community and allows users to share their creations. For that reason, we’re also working on a website (still work in progress) that will include tutorials and samples, along with a forum to talk with other painters and share your creations! The website will be fully operational when CoolPaintrVR releases on PS4.

Dualshock 4 and local language support

CoolPaintrVR will be available in exclusive for PS4 and, because of its nature, requires use of PS VR. We strongly recommend using a PS Move controller, although DualShock 4 will be supported too. The game will be also localised across Spanish, French, German, Italian and Portuguese.

Iron Spider suit inspired by Marvel’s Avengers: Infinity War coming to Marvel’s Spider-Man on 7th September

Hey everyone. It’s been an amazing three weeks since we announced the release date of Marvel’s Spider-Man, coming 7th September 2018. Your feedback to our release date, collector’s edition, and Game Informer cover story has been tremendous and humbling. Thank you all so much for your support and the kind words on social media!

When we announced the release date, we revealed our pre-order bonus, which includes a Spidey Suit pack containing three suits. But we only showed one suit – Spider-Punk – with the other two being held back to be unveiled later.

Here’s an updated look at the pre-order video, with the second suit revealed:

That’s right! Players who pre-order Marvel’s Spider-Man will get an early unlock of the Iron Spider suit inspired by Marvel’s Avengers: Infinity War. This was a big collaboration between Sony Interactive Entertainment, Insomniac, Marvel Games, and Marvel Studios. And while you may have glimpsed the pre-order video before, you haven’t seen this new video we made to show it off – some of you will even be lucky enough to see this on the big screen before the movie when the film hits theaters later this week.

Getting the opportunity to work with Marvel Games and Marvel Studios on this was another dream come true on this project. Seeing Spider-Man on the big screen in the MCU with his Iron Spider suit is something we are really excited about, and we knew Spider-Man fans around the world would want the chance to unlock our version of the Marvel’s Avengers: Infinity War inspired Iron Spider suit in-game. We were given access to the actual CG asset from the upcoming film (in theaters on 27th April!) to ensure that it was as true to the suit you’ll see at the cinema as possible.

In Marvel’s Spider-Man, having a variety of suits for players to use was a must-have for us. We looked across all of the Spider-Man lore for inspiration, and in the final game you’ll find suits inspired by comics and film, as well as completely original suits created by Insomniac and other artists. Each of the suits looks absolutely spectacular and we can’t wait for you to see more of them.

Beyond that, most suits will also feature a special suit power that you can use in-game. These powers let you do amazing things. While we aren’t quite ready to show them just yet, I did want to mention a couple examples. The Spider-Punk suit lets you rock out with a guitar, doing an AoE attack that’ll knock enemies off their feet. And the Iron Spider has a suit power that… well, you’ll know it when you see it happen in Marvel Studios’ Avengers: Infinity War.

So, April’s been quiet, huh? No big games happening anywhere on PlayStation at all. Of course, I’m kidding! If you haven’t had a chance to dive into Sony Santa Monica’s critically-acclaimed God of War then let us assure you, you’ve got something spectacular to look forward to.

And that’s all we’re going to say – there are no spoilers here on PlayStation Blog. Besides, we came here to do a job and that job, like always, is to unveil next month’s PlayStation Plus titles. April was a bit motor-mad and dystopian, so for May we’ve got something a little different lined-up:

Beyond: Two Souls

With Detroit: Become Human set to launch in less than a month, what better time to catch up with the work of veteran French studio Quantic Dream?

Not only a technical showcase in its own right, Beyond: Two Souls not only raised the bar for true-to-life visuals in the last generation but also broadened the scope for interactive narrative in gaming.

Featuring phenomenal performances throughout from A-list acting talent, and a complex web of branching narratives, few games combine such high production values with such nuanced narrative-driven gameplay.

Rayman Legends

One of the high watermarks for the 2D platforming genre, few games demonstrate a greater level of polish or more distinctive artistic direction that Rayman Legends.

Ubisoft Montpellier’s Rayman Legends combines everything the studio has learnt during two decades of development, bringing together a vast cast of playable characters, dozens of varied stages, incredible hand-drawn 2D visuals and a range of multiplayer options.

If you love varied platforming challenges, hunting for secrets or bouncing along to a mariachi-styled reimagining of Survivor’s Eye of the Tiger (think Guitar Hero meets high-speed platforming), then this might just be the very thing for you.
