PlayStation developers’ New Year’s Eve party Spotify playlist

Eternal worry of any New Year’s Eve party: the playlist. Indecision reigns supreme. What tracks for what mood? And while Spotify makes it all the easier to draw upon a world-sized history of phenomenal music, it’s also simpler for anyone to railroad your evening’s flow with a quick “add to” finger touch.

So we suggest you keep the game of digital musical chairs out of guests’ hands… and your own. Why not let the world’s leading PlayStation developers make the selection for you?

We asked creators worldwide for their personal recommendations that’d make the cut for a New Year Eve’s playlist of their design. Familiar names, new songs, chilled beats, unique dance floor fillers…find them all in the Spotify playlist* below (and the developers’ talk their choices after).

*Track choice may differ dependent on territory

“When I first heard [this], for me it was like a new type of music I just hadn’t heard before. And everytime I listen to it it blows me away.”

James Austin, Director, Boundless, Wonderstruck

“Arnalds is a very talented composer from Iceland (working among others on the soundtrack of Broadchurch). His soundtracks are calm, warm, atmospheric, they sound very modern while using real violins and horns, as well as incredible singers I have never heard of (sorry Nanna Bryndís Hilmarsdóttir… but I love your voice!). I think that in these troubled times, listening to atmospheric emotional soundtracks from a very talented guy can only do us some good and will maybe inspire us to make this world a better place in 2017…”

David Cage, Director, Detroit: Become Human, Quantic Dream

“The song that resonated with me the most this year is Youth, by Daughter. It sums up the whole year for me: Another year older, the earth has circled the sun once again. 2016 was a rough year, but we made it to the finish line. Youth is a reminder that things might not have panned out the way we hoped this year, but it’s no reason to stop trying. Basically, live in the moment and don’t rush, regret is a monster with sharp teeth that will chew you up. Happy 2017 friends!”

Jeff Shaw, Game Designer, Plants v Zombies: Garden Warfare 2, PopCap

“I first heard this song on the world’s number one PlayStation podcast – PS I Love XOXO – and it’s been on my playlist ever since. The upbeat tones and strong vocal presence make for a fantastic track.”

Scott Walters, Assistant Designer, Rise of the Tomb Raider, Crystal Dynamics

“When I started with games in the 80’s (Atari ST), developing games and playing electronic music were intertwined. I always keep a close ear to how sampling & electronic music is evolving. With De La Soul’s latest album (And the Anonymous Nobody), there’s lots of great songs from the guys who’ve seen it all, from sampling to live music. For instance listen to Royalty Capes.”

Nouredine Abboud, Senior Producer, Ghost Recon: Wildlands, Ubisoft Paris

“For those in need of a bit of New Year’s motivation/kick up the arse.”

Alex Kanaris-Sotiriou, Art Director, RIGS, Guerrilla Cambridge

“My New Year’s Eve song is going to have to be Starboy by The Weeknd. Daft Punk produced a great track that is highlighted by The Weeknd’s incredible vocals which at times give me some Michael Jackson vibes.”

Eric Jensen, Senior Game Designer, Days Gone, Bend Studio

“Childish Gambino – Boogieman.”

Brian Hayes, Creative Director, EA Sports UFC 2, EA Canada

“Lizzo’s ‘Good As Hell’ is one of my favorite songs to come out this past year. It’s an empowering piece of music that you can rock out to.”

Sarah Hebbler, Executive Producer, Rocket League, Psyonix

“Simple, hooky rock with belt-out vocals about going crazy despite what others say. This is a good one for just after midnight when you’re looking to peak the energy.”

Ian Milham, Game Director, Rise of the Tomb Raider, Crystal Dynamics

“While this depends on your New Year’s Eve plans, I figure it’s a good song to lose your mind to.”

Jake Solomon, Creative Director, Xcom 2, Firaxis Games

“While you’re asking me this I’m in California, so I’m going to have to go with Pixies, Hey, off Doolittle.”

Gavin McCarthy, Art Director, Way of the Passive Fist, Household Games Inc

“It’s a New Year’s essential for me. The almost primal, emotionally charged vocal lines of Eddie Vedder at the climax of that song are just incredible. Almost certain to blow away any cobwebs and get the room back into full on party mode.”

Andrew Wilans, Lead Designer, EVE: Valkyrie, CCP Games

“It makes me bounce my head and sing-a-long. Solid fun punk rock.”

Jason Schroeder, Senior Producer, South Park: The Fractured But Whole, Ubisoft San Francisco

“I love the way this tune slams in! ‘So this is the New Year/and I don’t feel any different’ pretty much says it all. We all search for resolutions, get dressed up and celebrate the hope that next year will be better than the last. It’s an excuse to let go and reset.”

James “Jlo” Lopez, Producer, Borderlands, Gearbox Software

“It’s a little on the heavy side, so I don’t know if most people would call this a New Year’s Eve track. But I think it’s a good one about drinking with friends and having a good time, about togetherness.”

Richard Rouse, Director, Designer, Writer, The Church in the Darkness, Parnoid Productions

“I’ve been a fan of Blind Guardian since the 90s, and I finally got to see them perform live again after almost 20 years – this time in San Francisco instead of Germany.”

Matthias Worch, Design Director, Mafia III, Hangar 13

“I just love this powerful and unapologetic march forward that makes you feel invincible.”

Jean-François Dugas, Executive Game Director, Deus Ex: Mankind Divided, Eidos Montreal

“Ravenous Disease” by Impending Doom from the Killing Floor 2 soundtrack. The reason – it’s a brutal track that makes me want to hop into a game and fight hordes of monsters!”

John Gibson, President, Killing Floor 2, Tripwire Interactive

“Listen to the song and I think you’ll understand why it needs to be on every playlist, not just this one.”

Masachika Kawata, Producer, Resident Evil 7, Capcom

“It sounds epic.”

Brian Allanson, Programmer, 3D Artist, A Post Modern RPG Yiik, Y2K

“Awesome track from an awesome band, and for a NYE party… really a great song for extending out that midnight kiss…”

Michael Gamble, Producer, Mass Effect Andromeda, BioWare

“This song is from the Payday 2 soundtrack. It really enhances the gameplay, but would also be just as good for parties, or even many FPS games. Give it a listen!”

Katsuhiro Harada, Project Director, Tekken, Namco Bandai

“Magic Sword’s The Way Home, because hopefully you’ll have drank enough to need to be reminded.”

Dave Crooks, Game Designer, Enter the Gungeon, Dodge Roll

“We highly recommend Turbo Killer by Carpenter Brut. It’s the type of song that is best played while fixing these annoying last few bugs in your game or to kick the energy up a notch in the late hours of your party. Killer beats and punching bass with awesome synths build up to an epic finale!”

Guillaume Voghel, Producer, Mordheim: City of the Damned, Rogue Factor

“Definitely the music that plays when you finally get outside of jail in Furi. Make it Right from The Toxic Avenger. So uplifting and at the same time so intense. Perfect for a new beginning.”

Audrey Leprince, Co-founder, Furi, The Game Bakers

“Sia’s ‘Alive’ celebrates a spirit of survival while looking resiliently ahead to what’s to come – sort of like what I envision Lara’s attitude to be as she endures crumbling tombs, hostile wilderness, and attacks by relentless enemies while still remaining focused on a single objective to keep pushing forward so she can beat Trinity and save the world.

‘Alive’ isn’t the most upbeat tune, but reflecting on all the world events in 2016, the gritty vocals minced with the repetitive chants of ‘I’m still breathing’ and ‘I’m alive’ seem like the proper note to carry us into 2017. Alive is Sia’s lead single of her 2016 album (followed by ‘Cheap Thrills’ and ‘The Greatest’) and includes Adele as one of the co-writers. I can think of no better way to send off 2016 than belting ‘I’m Alive!’ while doing my best impression of Sia/Adele/Lara Croft…”

Robin Huey, Associate Community Specialist, Rise of the Tomb Raider, Crystal Dynamics

“I listen the BGM all the time and listen to the music according to the recommendation from the playlists. If it is New Year’s Party, I would recommend Bruno Mars, 24K Magic. It will move your body!”

Kazutoki Kono, Project Director, Ace Combat, Bandai Namco

“Oliver Heldens is one of my favorite DJ’s and his track with Tiësto, The Right Song featuring Natalie La Rose is such a great track to celebrate New Year’s Eve.”

Mathijs de Jonge, Game Director, Horizon Zero Dawn, Guerrilla Games

“In solidarity with our Swiss headquarters I will pick DJ Bobo’s Everybody. Not sure if they will ever let me into their building now again though.”

Martin Rabl, PR Manager, Farming Simulator 17 Giants Software

“Don’t be down this New Year, jump around and be merry with this cheesy, dancefloor-inspired bouncer.”

Tim Wileman, Producer, Lego Star Wars, TT Games

“I’d make sure to turn on The Weeknd’s False Alarm for some good times!”

Paul Narducci, Lead Designer, The Crew, Ivory Tower

“I don’t really do holiday spirit specific songs. So I’ll propose something new that I am enjoying a lot right now and probably will be listening to through the holidays. Smoke & Retribution from flume. Great blend of genres. And Vince Staples.”

Dominic Guay, Senior Producer, Watch Dogs 2, Ubisoft Monteal

“This is a song just gets me every time I hear it. I’ll either play it to get me in the mood if I’m in the gym or I just want to chill out. It just takes me to a party atmosphere, and obviously that’s what you need come the stroke of midnight.”

Mark O’Connor, Producer, Wipeout Omega Collection, Sony XDev

“I’m a child of the 90s. Well, 70s, 80s and 90s – I’m a little older. But for me, the track that is guaranteed to get people on the dancefloor is Bell Biv DeVoe, Poison… those guys were part of New Edition, had been around for years, but when they went out on their own they had a very unique sound. So I just remember the summer of 1989, hearing that song over and over. It’s something that’s always stuck with me. And anytime I’ve been anywhere that song’s come on, people just flood the dance floor. So that’s a must-have on the playlist. Probably. Probably not a popular one with a lot of people, but I think it has surprising results.”

Dave Thatch, Senior Director, International Software Development & Special Operations for Worldwide Studios America

“I think a perfect tribute to a New Year Playlist would be to add an upbeat song from the late, great David Bowie.”

Phil Nightingale, Senior Designer, Tethered, Secret Sorcery

“Ok so I would say something by Memory Tapes but that would be too obscure I expect… I’ve recently delved back into my old CDs with the plan to clear them out i.e. get rid of them as I’ve accumulated so many over the years. Basically, that hasn’t worked out. I’m going to be really cheesy with this one but I’m going to say Erasure’s Love to Hate You.”

Michelle Ducker, Producer, Dreams, Media Molecule

“The Steep playlist is now available on Spotify! One of the songs I’d definitely recommend for a New Year’s Party is Freestyler by Bomfunk MC’s. It’s been out for a while now but it’s still as cool as the day it was first released.”

Sébastien Arnoult, Producer, Steep, Ubisoft Annecy

“Intergalactic is one of the tracks that I’ve listened to most throughout the development of our current in-development game Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice. It helps me to get going in the mornings and is the perfect track for anyone to ‘try’ break dancing to at a New Year’s Party.”

Dominic Matthews, Product Development, Hellblade, Ninja Theory

“So…. I decided to ask my son Erik this question, since I figured that all of my music recommendations would be at least five years old, AND THAT’S NO GOOD. He said, “New Year’s Party? Well, hmmm. You want people to be able to dance to it, and also to know the song. You know what? Honestly? Journey’s ‘Don’t Stop Believin'” WHICH IS PRETTY GOOD. But… you know what, kids? I’m gonna have to go ahead and add CL’s ‘Hello, Bitches’ as MY recommendation. Because if there’s one thing I learned this year about music it’s that CL is AMAZING.”

Jason Vandenberghe, Creative Director, For Honor, Ubisoft Monteal

“It’s the perfect uplifting party song!”

Spencer Yip, Director, Fallen Legion, YummyYummyTummy

“2016 was the year marking the end of the career of one of the greatest musical geniuses of a century.”

John Watson, Technical Director, The Banner Saga, Stoic

“The song’s soulful arrangement and message make up for its slower tempo. I would try to fit it in at the end of the night for a bit of reflection.”

Ken Chua, Associate Software Engineer, Rise of the Tomb Raider, Crystal Dynamics

This War of Mine: The Little Ones & Day of the Tentacle Remastered hit PS Plus in January

It’s a great time of year to be a gamer; the no man’s land between Christmas and New Year, when the house is still full of unhealthy deliciousness and school, work and other fun-spoiling real life commitments are still a week away. And as 2017 approaches, we’ve got another stash of PlayStation Plus games coming your way to keep you playing in the new year…

TITLE

Available to download from 3rd January:

Day of the Tentacle Remastered

“What possible harm can one insane mutant tentacle do?” A good question – and one you’ll find the answer to in the hilarious Day of the Tentacle Remastered as you follow Bernard, Laverne and Hoagie through a classic adventure that mashes together cartoon capers, fiendish puzzles and some of the most quotable lines ever found in a video game script.

Mad scientist Dr Fred Edison’s mutant monster tentacle has escaped from his lab with a plan to take over the world and it’s down to you, our heroes and a malfunctioning time machine to put a stop to it’s dastardly plans.

This War of Mine: The Little Ones

It’s certainly a month of contrasts, with This War of Mine: The Little Ones bringing the ravages of conflict to PS Plus. Dark, emotionally scarring but at the same time tactical and exhilarating, you’re charged with keeping a group of civilian survivors alive in the midst of a devastating war.

By fortifying your shelter by day and scavenging for supplies by night, you might stand a chance of keeping them free from disease, hunger and desperate, merciless raiders – and of keeping the little ones safe and smiling.

And the new year treats don’t stop there; PS4 players get a little extra with a couple of sneaky Cross-Buy titles in The Swindle and Titan Souls (also coming to PS3 and PS Vita respectively), as well as Blazerush on PS3 and Azkend 2 on PS Vita. So, plenty to chase the January blues away!

Last chance!

As one batch of games enters PS Plus, so another batch must leave – but fear not, you’ve got until 3rd January to download this lot, if you haven’t already:

Fu’Un Super Combo hits PS4 today, ft. a pair of previously Japan-only PS2 fighting games

Our team at SNK has worked closely with Sony in order to bring a collection of older titles to their PS2 Games initiative on PS4. We believe in remembering and highlighting our past works and history and feel it is important to offer our fans the opportunity to play these classic games on modern hardware.

Our release this week is of particular importance as it is the first import title we have released as part of the program. Fu’Un Super Combo which releases today is a PS2 compilation that has only seen release in Japan up until now.

This release contains both Savage Reign and its sequel Kizuna Encounter. The PS2 release also included new content such as arranged soundtracks for both titles and the inclusion of a colour edit mode to allow players to customise their favorite character.

It is also important to point out that although this is a Japanese import release, it is possible to change the in-game text language from the options menu inside both games. Savage Reign supports English and Spanish while Kizuna Encounter supports English, Spanish and Portuguese.

These two fighting games both offer unique but different gameplay experiences. Savage Reign combines unique weapon-based combat with the ability to jump between a lower and upper field, much like games in the Fatal Fury series. Kizuna Encounter changes things up by replacing the ability to jump between the foreground and background with a new tag battle system. Your tag partner will hang out in the background until you call them in from the special tag zones. Once either one of your characters are KO’d that signals the end of the match so mastering the tag battle system is the key to victory!

TITLETITLE
TITLETITLE

Fu’Un Super Combo is just the first import release we have planned and we would like to take this chance to tease our next release as well! Early next year we will be releasing ADK Damashii, another PS2 compilation that was only released in Japan. It includes 5 classic NEOGEO games: Aggressors of Dark Kombat, Ninja Master’s: Haō Ninpō Chō, Ninja Combat, Ninja Commando, and Twinkle Star Sprites. The inclusion of Ninja Master’s: Haō Ninpō Chō should be of particular interest to NeoGeo fans and collectors alike, as that is one of the rarest NeoGeo cartridges in existence and regularly goes on sale for ridiculous prices.

Stay tuned in the future for more exciting PS2 Games releases from SNK!

8 things you should try out in the new Gravity Rush 2 demo

You may have seen the good news: a Gravity Rush 2 demo is now available on PlayStation Store. Download it now and get to grips with Kat’s unique gravity-defying powers, explore a corner of the beautiful floating city of Jirga Para Lhao and save citizens, rescue cargo and reclaim piping-hot meals from flying thieves.

There’s a lot to take in and fun things to do, and that’s even outside the stated mission objectives. Here’s a few suggestions of things to try out in the demo.

1. Play it at least twice

TITLE

Right at the demo’s start you’re asked whether you want an easier, tutorial-led playthrough (Beginner Course) or one that lets you explore straight away and eventually access all of Kat’s gravity powers (Experienced Course). Obviously it’s worth jumping into the former if it’s your first time in Kat’s world. But there’s more than just the initial guide differentiating the two; your choice will lead to different missions and new enemies. Advice? Play it twice (at least).

2. Get to Syd!

TITLE

Also in this initial opening you’re given a brief guide to the camera controls by way of locating where your shipmate Syd is. Afterwards there’s a brief period to soak in the view of the sprawling Jirga Para Lhao before you dock. But come any subsequent playthrough, try and make it up to Syd before the cutscene. With no gravity powers at this early stage, it’ll give you a chance to sharpen your traditional platforming skills.

3. Ten pin bowling… and anti-grav racing

TITLE

One gravity-altering superpower not touched on in either difficulty mode’s tutorials is Kat’s slide. Tap and hold L2 to scorch along whatever surface you’re on. It seemingly doesn’t serve much purpose other than to disturb city inhabitants, but switch to Jupiter mode then take aim at attacking soldiers in the Advanced Course demo and enjoy knocking them aside like skittles. Alternatively, try out some unofficial anti-grav racing and scoot around the city’s streets and corners.

4. Lunar Leap

The advanced version of the demo gives you access to both the ground-pounding Jupiter and lighter than air Lunar gravity abilities. Both are a lot of fun, but switching to the latter means even Kat’s normal jumps propel her much higher, more so if you charge the jump the longer you hold down X beforehand. With this in mind, try going full Superman and leap buildings in a single bound. In particular, can you make it over the high walkway connecting two buildings by the city’s main market square without your feet touching it?

5. Explore… everywhere

TITLE

While the demo points out your next mission objective, it gives you the freedom to explore the city between the triggering of events. It’s worth taking your time to use your gravity powers to explore. Can you touch any of the traffic zooming by in the skies surrounding the city? Or even locate the above oversized crystal?

6. Get the gull…without the collectables

TITLE

The Beginner demo includes a very unique chase as a seagull makes off with your tasty goods. Along the rooftop route are blue gems, that once collected will replenish Kat’s gravity gauge. They’re great for when you’re getting to grips with the game’s controls, but can you perfect Kat’s gravity falling to reclaim her kebab without blue gem replenishment?

7. Take flight then fight

TITLE

Irrespective of which version of the demo you play, you’ll come up against enemy groups that need defeated during your travels. Once these fights start, see how many enemies you can take out without touching the ground or before your gravity energy depletes. It’ll give you the opportunity to fine tune your control of Kat’s powers.

8. Soak in the world

TITLE

Gravity Rush 2 offers a lush, colourful world full of interesting people and amazing music. Sure you’ll dash through the demo the first (or second) time, testing powers and rushing to mission objectives. But make a point to come back and play tourist instead. There’s a lot to soak in. (But don’t let that stop you creating some mischief – try and startle the balloon seller located in the market square!)

Harmonix to bring remaining Rock Band DLC exports to PS4 from January

Hey friends, as many of you are aware, it’s taken us much longer than we expected to bring DLC entitlements to our European PlayStation 4 players on a handful of products, most notably some of the disc and track pack exports, including Rock Band 2.

We won’t bore you with all the technical challenges involved in carrying forward ownership entitlements across different console generations, but it goes without saying moving those challenges have been substantial.

TITLE

We’re continuing to work with the teams at SIEE to iron out any issues we encounter, as well as the submission of the content. We also wanted to give everyone a rough schedule so you know when to expect each outstanding pack and export.

  • Rock Band 2: January 2017
  • AC/DC Live: Rock Band Track Pack: February 2017
  • Lego Rock Band: March 2017
  • Green Day: Rock Band: April 2017
  • Rock Band Blitz: April 2017
  • Rock Band 2 – 20 Free Songs: May 2017
  • Rock Band™ Track Pack Vol. 2: May 2017

Voting is now open for PlayStation Blog’s Game of the Year 2016 Awards

You’ve read what developers have considered their favourite PlayStation gaming moments over the past 12 months. Now it’s time to for your voice to be heard as we open voting for the this year’s Game of the Year Awards.

PS.Blog Game of the Year 2016

And even if you don’t see your own top pick in our list of nominees below, there’s a write-in option to allow you to cast your vote to which title you believe deserves the Platinum.

Polls are open from right now through to midnight on 31st December, after which votes will be tallied and winners presented.

Best Independent Game
Best Use of PS4 Pro
Best PlayStation VR Game

When you vote, take it all into consideration!

Editor’s note: As in previous years, any game that has previously won a “Most Anticipated” award is not eligible to win a Trophy this year. That said, you can still vote for previous winners Horizon Zero Dawn and Persona 5, and we will call them out appropriately in the winners post should they place.

Furthermore, this year we are removing the year from this category. That means you can vote for any game that is currently announced, even if it doesn’t have a release date or year set.

Nier: Automata demo out now, new trailer teases Final Fantasy XV, Dragon Quest weapons

As we come to the end of 2016, we thought there would be no better way to round off the year than to give you guys the opportunity to try out Nier: Automata yourselves. It’s the season for giving after all, so we’re excited to announce that the Nier: Automata playable demo is available to download from the PlayStation Store for free, right now!

The demo takes you to an abandoned factory, following android 2B’s mission to destroy a massive enemy weapon that lies within. You’ll get to use a variety of both short and long range weapons to take down hordes of enemy machines. The combat is action-packed, fast-paced, super slick and there are multiple difficulties so once you’ve got the hang of things, you can really test and refine your skills. I’d be very impressed to hear how many of you can complete the demo on the hardest difficulty!

To celebrate the Nier: Automata demo release, we’ve got a new trailer showing off some weapons you might recognise:

Eagle-eyed Square Enix fans have probably already figured out what the new weapons are and yes, the Engine Blade, Noctis’ signature weapon in Final Fantasy XV and the Cypress Stick from the Dragon Quest franchise will be usable weapons in Nier: Automata! They will both be unlockable in the final game so you don’t have to worry about downloading them as additional DLC. We’re going to keep how you obtain them a mystery for now though.

The news doesn’t stop there though! From today you can also pre-order the Nier: Automata Day One Edition directly through PlayStation Store. In addition to the Day One Edition six bonus DLC items, the PSN digital pre-order edition also comes with an additional three exclusive DLC items and a static theme.

In case you missed the news, we also recently announced the Nier: Automata Black Box Edition which includes a YoRHa android 2B figurine, a 64 page hardback artbook, a soundtrack selection CD (featuring 13 live recorded songs from Nier and Nier: Automata), in-game bonus DLC, a steelbook case and special collector’s box. It’s available in limited quantities from the Square Enix store, so be sure to pre-order one if you don’t want to miss out.

Nier: Automata demo out now, new trailer teases Final Fantasy XIV, Dragon Quest weapons in-game

Nier: Automata tells the story of androids 2B, 9S and A2 and their battle to reclaim the Earth from powerful enemy machines who have driven humanity from their home. The demo will give you a glimpse of the game’s story and there’s a lot of spectacular moments with distinct Nier style twists in it too. I don’t want to spoil any of it for you as they’ll be even more exciting to experience yourself, but I hope the demo gets you hyped to play the full game when it comes out in Europe on 10th March next year.

I think that’s enough news for one day, hopefully you’ve been able to download the demo so you don’t have to stick around here any longer, go play it and let us know what you think afterwards on our official Nier Facebook and Twitter pages!

Thanks for reading and from the Nier: Automata team – Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!

See you in 2017!

PlayStation developers’ favourite gaming moments of 2016

It’s been a truly momentous year for PlayStation in terms of games. 2016 has offered one of the more diverse 12 months in PlayStation history, whether you’re exploring exotic locales, screaming at friends in an overstressed kitchen, becoming an iconic dark knight, or punching the air after scoring ‘Play of the Game’.

With so much choice, it’s impossible to choose an easy top ten of the past year, so instead we asked those who’ve transported us to worlds beyond our imagination for their personal favourites. These are the best PlayStation gaming moments of 2016, as chosen by developers the world over.

Batman: Arkham VR

As chosen by…

“Its use of the Move controllers for accessing gadgets, navigating and interacting with items and scenery really set the standard for an intuitive and compelling experience in VR. The game is full of memorable moments but the standout for me took place in the latter part of the game in a prison cell. Without saying too much it made me feel completely absorbed into Batman’s world where I felt anxious, vulnerable and overwhelmed, but all in a good way and gave me an experience that could only be had in VR.”

Phil Nightingale, Senior Designer, Tethered, Secret Sorcery

Battlefield 1

As chosen by…

“There are a lot of speedy shooters out there these days, where you’re rushing around killing everything, but Battlefield 1 is a little slower, in a good way. It sort of matches the era that’s depicted in the game, so it was a fresh perspective on recent shooters. That’s why I really enjoyed it.”

Yosuke Hayashi, Game Director, Nioh, Team Ninja

Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare

As chosen by…

“My new guilty pleasure: COD’s zombie mode. It’s strangely relaxing to kill zombies while flowing through the map. I’ve skipped the franchise for many years and so this is my first time trying this out. I’ve always enjoyed co-op survival modes ever since Unreal Tournament 2004 Invasion Mod!”

Dominic Guay, Senior Producer, Watch Dogs 2 , Ubisoft Montreal

Darkest Dungeon

As chosen by…

“There are so many reasons to love this game: the narrator, the gameplay, the punishing, brutal failure, the tense exploration, the whole theme… Yeah. I love this game. I come back to it again, and again, and again… and again. (I worry about that, though. It is brutally unforgiving. Is there something wrong with me?)”

Jason Vandenberghe, Creative Director, For Honor, Ubisoft Montreal

Dark Souls III

As chosen by…

“It’s a no-brainer: Dark Souls III has the fullest game experience, a universe that’s both rich and consistent, an unparalleled depth in all game aspects – definitely my champion in 2016.”

David Guillaume, Artistic Director, The Crew, Ivory Tower

“I watched one of our animators take part in a Dark Souls III speed challenge at EGX Rezzed and it piqued my interest to finally take the plunge and give the series a go. The sense of threat, trepidation and subtle world building sucked me in utterly. Sure, it’s punishing, but the sense of achievement after cracking a tricky section or boss is unparalleled. It’s a strange compulsion, like eating chilli. I was hooked.”

Alex Kanaris-Sotiriou, Art Director, RIGS, Guerrilla Cambridge

“There’s a lot of opinions in our company which one is the best [game in the franchise], but in terms of what’s the best series out there, I think that’s one of the clear winners. There are a lot of odd titles here and there that improved what gameplay can be in games. There’s a few shining lights out there [of that], and Dark Souls has been one of the strongest.”

Mikael Haveri, Head of Publishing, Nex Machina, Housemarque

Dishonored 2

As chosen by…

“My personal favorite gaming moment of 2016 was finding and eliminating the Crown Killer in Dishonored 2. The entire Addermire Institute environment was soaked in history and atmosphere, and the act of non-lethally dispatching the Crown Killer (with all of the surrounding circumstances, which I don’t want to spoil here) was an awesome sequence of events.”

Matthias Worch Design Director, Mafia III, Hangar 13

“I had already spent a good amount of time in the game already, and was loving it, when I came upon the fourth mission The Clockwork Mansion. Not going to lie, entering a level that involves a lot of puzzles and a constantly shifting landscape made me nervous. However, it quickly became my favourite level as I felt constantly challenged and when I figured something it out was very emotionally rewarding. Just talking about it gets me hyped up to play again, so off I go for a second playthrough!”

Lilith Newman, FX/Tech Art Producer, Borderlands, Gearbox Software

Doom

As chosen by…

“Doom was a delight to play, and a tour de force of genius level design. The whole game was a nonstop barrage of enjoyment, but it really reached its peaks during the forays into hell. What an homage to and leap beyond the original.”

John Watson, technical director, The Banner Saga, Stoic

“I really enjoyed it. I thought it had a great balance of risk and reward and the game design really encouraged you to engage with the opponent.”

Gavin McCarthy, Art Director, Way of the Passive Fist, Household Games Inc

“I’ve had a lot of fun with it – it’s not trying to be more than what it is. At the beginning of the game you have a sequence where a guy pops up on a monitor and tries to explain what’s going on, and your character just smashes it: there’s no time for story. You just take a gun and start killing demons. No nonsense.”

Andrew Kephalidis, Gameplay Animator, Watch Dogs, Ubisoft Montreal

Dragon Quest Builders

As chosen by…

“I’ve played several games, but the one I’ve spent the most time playing was Dragon Quest Builders. There’s a bit more guidance than in Minecraft, and it made me understand the appeal of the phenomena.”

Fumito Ueda, Game Designer, The Last Guardian

EVE Valkyrie

As chosen by…

“For me it was the first ‘real’ space battle I had in VR. I’m a big fan of films like Top Gun and Star Wars, especially for the epic dogfights, whether that be in fighter jets or starships. Playing a game like Eve Valkyrie for the first time in VR was incredible, you really feel like you are actually sitting in that starship cockpit. Whether you are pulling a “fly-by” up close to a massive carrier ship or dodging in between gaps in asteroid fields to chase down and take out other players in multiplayer, it feels unlike anything else you’ve played. All this with the added bonus of being able to look around 360 degrees with 3D audio is an incredible feeling.”

Mark Lintott, Technical Director, PS VR Worlds, London Studio

Far Cry Primal

As chosen by…

“To me, Far Cry Primal is without a doubt the best player experience of 2016. Being fully immersed in a wild, hostile environment alone brought some nerve-racking moments – and some long distressing nights listening to the wolves’ howling!”

Stéphane “Fergus” Beley, Game Director, The Crew, Ivory Tower

Final Fantasy XIV

As chosen by…

“Catching up to endgame content in FFXIV. Being able to play with my wife and friends from work and getting the sense of accomplishment of defeating brutal bosses with friends is hard to match.”

Jason Schroeder, Senior Producer, South Park: The Fractured But Whole, Ubisoft San Francisco

Final Fantasy XV

As chosen by…

“My favourite moment of 2016 has to be the title sequence of Final Fantasy XV. At the surface, it is just the user holding a button to push a car. But in the context of the game’s interminable development, the moment when the strains of “Stand By Me” plays over what sounded like the Final Fantasy arpeggio was sublime. It felt like a huge weight was lifted from the chests of fans and devs alike, and I was happy to be a part of it. I can’t imagine a song better suited in keeping with the theme of brotherhood and thanking fans for their dedication.”

Ken Chua, Associate Software Engineer, Rise of the Tomb Raider, Crystal Dynamics

“Finally, getting to play Final Fantasy XV! It’s been a long time coming, but Tabata-san and all of the development team made it worth the wait.”

Spencer Yip, Director, Fallen Legion, YummyYummyYummy

Firewatch

As chosen by…

“The entire game kept me hooked from start to finish. The intrigue and the characters are so well fleshed out. The beginning of the game, where you just make some text choices over a black screen while ambient music plays, gave me more emotions than all the blockbuster games out there. It’s a testimony to the developers’ sensitivity when it comes to crafting a very human, very profound narrative experience. Definitely, one of my highlights of 2016.”

Jean-François Dugas – Executive Game Director, Deus Ex: Mankind Divided, Eidos Montreal

“My favourite gaming moment of 2016 was the very opening of Firewatch. You’re presented with the back story of Henry, the protagonist, and the events that have led to him taking a job in the wilderness at Two Forks Lookout. The back story is told through simply presented lines of text, but the writing is so brilliant and the narrative so compelling that you can’t help but be completely sucked in. The simplicity of the presentation makes you pay attention to every word, making the writing hit home hard, setting you up perfectly to feel and think as Henry throughout the game.”

Dominic Matthews, Product Development, Hellblade, Ninja Theory

“I’d have to say the start to Firewatch. The opening hits me with an emotional gut punch similar to what I felt while watching the beginning of Pixar’s Up. The artistry of the forest vistas following that incredible introductory story led me to want to visit Wyoming. That desire was a first for me. Campo Santo did an amazing job and Olly Moss is a master at creating a memorable aesthetic. It’s rare when a video game can incite transference to inhabit a certain place in real life just using its pixels and rendered scenes.”

Eric Monacelli, Director of Communications, Infinity Ward.

Hyper Light Drifter

As chosen by…

“It’s got to be Hyper Light Drifter. I absolutely love this game, it has so much style. I knew from the moment I saw it on Kickstarter I would play the heck out of it. I’ve recommended Hyper Light to nearly everyone I have spoken with. You can really see the meticulous care and passion the Heart Machine team put into it. The world design, visual storytelling and ethereal music by Disasterpeace, all comes together to create an atmosphere that I want to replace my eyes and ears with. If you haven’t played it yet, you are missing something special.”

Jeff Shaw, Game Designer, Plants v Zombies: Garden Warfare 2, PopCap

Inside

As chosen by…

“Getting chased by creepy humans and rabid dogs during the intro of Inside was one of our most intense gaming moment this year. It reminded us the intensity of a normal day at E3. Joking aside, the emotion and anxiety communicated through that sequence greatly inspired us. This is one example showing how indie developers are able to push new experiences and new gameplay for the players to discover!”

Guillaume Voghel, Producer, Mordheim: City of the Damned, Rogue Factor

“I was amazed by Playdead’s Inside. The art direction was just brilliant, and the gaming experience was very pleasant and frictionless. This game is full of very interesting, moving moments, and the last part is just totally mind-blowing. If you think that games with horizontal scrolling are dead, play Inside and you will be surprised at how talented people can take an old concept and make something original and meaningful with it.”

David Cage, Director, Detroit: Become Human, Quantic Dream

NBA 2K17

As chosen by…

“In 2016 I’ve had a great time with NBA 2K17. How you enjoy games is also linked to who you play them with. This social aspect is very important for the games I work on. And this year I was able to play NBA 2K17 with my seven year old son; for the first time he is getting better than his dad!”

Nouredine Abboud, Senior Producer, Ghost Recon: Wildlands, Ubisoft Paris

No Man’s Sky

As chosen by…

“I think for me it was waiting for No Man’s Sky to come out; that was definitely the most memorable moment for me this year, I couldn’t wait for it to come out.

“The game made me feel really happy. The pacing was just what I needed. It was calm, ambient. I could explore and take on whatever it had to throw at me at my own pace and in my own time. There was no pressure and that was really refreshing. It reminded me a little of Animal Crossing New Leaf. That sounds like an absurd comparison but I love those sorts of games where you can plod along and do things how you want to but with no time pressure or no big bosses to deal with – I can make the game my own and imprint my own stories on to it.

“It was really exciting and is still really exciting to play and to watch others play. I love the sci-fi genre in the way it makes you question existence and being and No Man’s Sky really ticks those boxes for me. I’ve particularly enjoyed watching my partner play it; there’s something calming and peaceful about watching someone else play and discover and commentate along the way. You sort of feel like you’re going on a journey together, but in the safety of your home, on your sofa.”

Michelle Ducker, Producer, Dreams, Media Molecule

Overcooked

As chosen by…

“Realising how Overcooked, the most fun party game this year and my GOTY, is also a huge test on friendship and relationship! Come on, I get shouted at for not cutting the onion fast enough! Love it!”

Audrey Leprince, co-founder of The Game Bakers, Furi, The Game Bakers

Overwatch

As chosen by…

“Pulling off 10 victories in a row using an all Mercy team in Overwatch was pretty epic and chaotic at the same time. Trying to fill the niche roles using only a support character was a fun and challenging experience. The coordination of keeping each other healed and powered up was something to behold, especially when the opposing team focused their efforts on one individual.”

Matt Grise, Associate Producer, Rise of the Tomb Raider, Crystal Dynamics

“It’s been awhile since I played a shooter game, and it was really interesting as a developer to play a game were you don’t really notice any flaws. The last game that had that was Journey. You play Overwatch and ask “where are the edges, where are the cracks, where can I see there’s been a shoddy job?” But it’s just so polished. And the sound is amazing. You can hear who it is coming after you based on the footsteps. It’s so expressive. It’s a joy to play.”

Martin Kvale, Audio Lead, Mosaic, Krillbite

PlayStation VR

As chosen by…

“It’s not a particular title, but the PS VR release was definitely my best PlayStation moment of 2016. It’s been awhile since I have seen gamers get so excited about something, and seeing everyone scrambling to get their hands on one felt good. It was the first time in a while I had seen such long lines outside of stores for gaming, and it was quite exciting to see.”

Katsuhiro Harada, Project Director, Tekken, Bandai Namco

Rez Infinite

As chosen by…

“I was a massive Rez fan when it first came out years ago, and bringing it to VR has ignited that for me again. This is the best that the game has ever been, and has completely immersed me visually and aurally for weeks now. I play it after a long day of developing MEA.”

Michael Gamble, Producer, Mass Effect Andromeda, BioWare

“A sensory rush greater than getting your pants stuck in the doors of a Tokyo subway train. Crashing through a nightclub. In The Matrix.”

Andy Robinson, Writer, Yooka-Laylee, Playtonic Games

The Witness

As chosen by…

“My best PlayStation gaming moment of 2016 was the several times in The Witness that I thought my brain would crack and fail. A few times I would start in on a puzzle, thinking at first, “What is this? There’s no way to do this!”, only to break through the preconceptions I had about how a puzzle worked and have the impossible turn into common sense.”

Ian Milham, Game Director, Rise of the Tomb Raider, Crystal Dynamics

“I thought it was cool, thought it was interesting. It wasn’t a regurgitation of something else.”

James Austin, Director, Boundless, Wonderstruck

The Last Guardian

As chosen by…

“It has to be The Last Guardian. Mainly because it’s now seen the light of day. But also because it’s a very personal story. We haven’t learned too much about the game. It’s about the relationship that you, playing as a boy, make with Trico. So it’s going to be something that’s very unique to everyone who plays it. And my experience playing it has been phenomenal, very personal and it literally made me cry at the very end.”

Dave Thatch, Senior Director, International Software Development & Special Operations for SIE Worldwide Studios America

Titanfall 2

As chosen by…

“I was rodeo-ing an enemy Titan and the pilot ejected sending us both flying sky-high. Then he grapple-hooked me out of mid-air and melee drop-kicked me for the kill. Yeah, my favorite moment was one where I died. I don’t know if that happens all the time with awesome players, but it’s only happened to me once. Either way, I was honoured to play my part in such a glorious moment.”

Brian Hayes, Creative Director, EA Sports UFC 2, EA Canada

“The time travel section of Titanfall 2 is the most fun I’ve had with a game all year. Looking down through a glass floor at a room full of bad dudes and realising that I needed to hop time once to fall in, then again to avoid falling into a pit of fire only to be stuck in the room with the enemies, was very, very cool. Honestly that entire game is nothing short of brilliant from start to finish- a masterpiece of level design.”

Dave Crooks, Game Designer, Enter the Gungeon, Dodge Roll

“I really enjoyed the Titanfall 2 campaign mode, the gunplay is very satisfying, the environments look amazing on the PS4, and the setting brings back memories of one of my all-time-favorites, Silent Bomber (PS1, 1999).”

Mathijs de Jonge, Game Director, Horizon Zero Dawn,Guerrilla Games

Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End

As chosen by…

“Offroading with my jeep in Uncharted 4. It was fun to take a moment and relax in an otherwise intense game, and enjoy the incredible craft of what the Naughty Dog team put together.”

Jake Solomon, Creative Director, XCOM 2, Firaxis Games

“It’s just such a great game. I loved every moment.”

Masachika Kawata, Producer, Resident Evil 7, Capcom

“Definitely Uncharted 4, particularly the Madagascar chase scene- such a well put together and dynamic set piece!”

Chris Davis, Founder, The Escapists, Mouldy Toof Studios

“The intro sequence with the toy gun really made me laugh.”

Sébastien Arnoult, Producer , Steep, Ubisoft Annecy

“It’s been a great year for gaming, but for me, the standout moment has to come from Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End. Towards the end of the tower collapse level on Liberteria, there’s an action scene featuring Drake, Sam and Nadine where you get to experience what is for me, is one of the best looking, most fun and expertly choreographed sequences in recent video game history. I must have played this section a dozen times and it still leaves me coming back for more.”

Tim Wileman, Producer, Lego Star Wars The Force Awakens, TT Games

“Apart from launching Batman: Arkham VR, the biggest moment of 2016 for me has to be the Madagascar section in Uncharted 4. Naughty Dog’s accomplishments here are spectacular: gorgeous views, great character interaction, and a wonderful sense of freedom. It all adds up to a hugely memorable section in an already incredible game.”

Gaz Deaves, Social Marketing Manager, Batman: Arkham VR, Rocksteady

“I had a great time playing Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End this year. The environments are amazing and the gameplay is a blast from start to finish.”

Sarah Hebbler, Executive Producer, Rocket League, Psyonix

“My best gaming moment for 2016 is Uncharted 4. Having had the opportunity to work on the franchise with Uncharted: Golden Abyss for the Vita, Nathan Drake has a special place in my heart. The series has redefined storytelling with video games, and Uncharted 4 was an incredible send off for the characters and the journey that they took us on.”

Eric Jensen, Sr Game Designer, Days Gone, Bend Studio

“It was one of those things were I had to take a couple of days off work just to play it. The scene that I remember the most, and honestly it’s perhaps everyone’s favourite scene, it was going from that puzzle/church thing where things were falling on you and then there was that chase scene all the way through the downtown of the city. You get on a truck, then you’re knocking people off it, then you’re on the dirt bike, then there’s a tank chasing you… That entire sequence was really memorable to me, because my wife – she’s not so much of a gamer – walked in just as I got to that part and just sat there awestruck as I was going through a 15 minute series of amazing events. And it was like ‘oh my god, is this a movie?’ ‘No, I’m playing right now!'”

Scott Campbell, Creative Director, Starblood Arena, WhiteMoon Dreams

“I beat Uncharted 4 and loved that. I play a lot of games of all types of genres, but the sheer production values of something like Uncharted again raised the benchmark.”

Hermen Hulst, Managing Director and Co-Founder, Horizon: Zero Dawn, Guerrilla Games

“I played and loved a lot of games this year. One of them: Uncharted 4 was everything I hoped for and expected in an Uncharted game, and when I was playing it I couldn’t believe the production values. I mean, look at the leaves, alone! Goddamn those leaves – as a developer the standard for leaves was just raised to a crazy point [laughs]. I really enjoyed the game. ”

Tim Schafer, Co-Founder and Designer, Grim Fandango, Double Fine

Uncharted: The Nathan Drake Collection

As chosen by…

“I’m torn between the [Uncharted: Nathan Drake Collection] and 4. I’ve only just started Thief’s End, and I’d forgotten how good [the originals] were. I don’t have a lot of time to play games, and certainly games of 10, 15 hours. So to get back into it was quite an effort, just in terms of carving out a bit of time, making sure I was in the zone to play games. It was nice on a personal level to connect back with them and get ready for Uncharted 4.”

Mark O’Connor, Producer, Wipeout Omega Collection, Sony XDev

The Playroom VR

As chosen by…

“My favourite gaming moment of 2016 was playing The Playroom VR with my family for the first time in a home environment. After spending so much time working in VR as part of my studio life it was an incredible moment to share in their shock, wonder and amazement of what this new technology can deliver. We must have played Monster Escape about 20 times in a row, swapping the VR headset and screaming with excitement as the monster gets launched into the sky at the end of the level. Amazing.”

Andrew Wilans, Lead Designer, EVE: Valkyrie, CCP Games
