Hi, I’m Bryce Hsiao, global community manager for Korean developer ROI Games. Today I’m delighted to share the news that White Day: A Labyrinth Named School is coming to the West and headed to PS4 as a console-exclusive this August.
It’s the story of new Yeondoo High School student Hui-min Lee, who finds himself trapped in school overnight and chased by possessed killers and malevolent ghosts. Please enjoy your first peek of the game in action below.
Hopefully, older readers who have been following the horror genre for many years should have heard of the game’s legacy, but in case you haven’t, let me offer a brief history lesson. First released exclusively in Korea back in 2001, White Day was a first-person survival horror title. However, its propensity for delivering scares became so notorious among online horror and gaming fan groups that it soon spread across the internet and was translated into different languages by fans.
To this day, White Day is regarded as one of the most pivotal horror games ever created, which is why we’re so happy to finally bring this classic to console gamers for the first time. The console release of this remake has been a long time coming: 16 years, in fact, which is enough time for a newborn baby at the time of our original release to have grown up and graduated from school already! Needless to say, both PlayStation and gaming itself has greatly evolved during that timespan, so we’ve been hard at work to ensure White Day: A Labyrinth Named School looks, sounds and plays the part of a modern game.
ROI Games has remade it from top to bottom, overhauling its graphics and audio, replanning gameplay mechanics and even adding in an entirely new character and storyline for this version to make it the ultimate (not to mention the scariest) edition of this legendary title. And not only have we included an English language option for our western fans, but we have also localised the game for French, Spanish, Italian, German and Russian PS4 players, too.
But what is White Day, I hear you ask? Here in the East, White Day is the sister holiday to Valentine’s Day. Traditionally, on Valentine’s Day, girls give gifts to boys. One month later, on 14 March, those gifts are reciprocated as boys give gifts to girls as a sign of affection. Our game takes place on the eve of White Day, with our young protagonist sneaking into school to hide chocolates in the homeroom of a classmate he likes… only to find himself trapped in the building with dozens of bloodthirsty ghosts. Talk about unlucky in love!
When White Day: A Labyrinth Named School arrives in the West you can expect it to feature all your favourite survival horror features, including tricky puzzles, resource-based health and save mechanics, stealthy, torchlight-fuelled exploration and item management. On top of that, we have a scare system that increases the level and frequency of ghost attacks if you play on higher difficulties. Judging by the sweat pouring off our human guinea pigs, our surprises are more terrifying than ever before!
We hope you like what you see – stay tuned for much more on White Day: A Labyrinth Named School in the near future!
