Fan favourite Nash to return in Street Fighter V

Hey everyone! We are happy to announce two huge pieces of news for Street Fighter V : the return of Nash, and the online beta program!

Charlie Nash has been a fan favourite character in the Street Fighter series for years and finally makes his comeback in Street Fighter V, although noticeably a little… different. For those who are unfamiliar with him, continue on for a quick history lesson.

guile-sfiv-select

First mentioned in Street Fighter II: The World Warrior (1991) by Guile during his quest for revenge; Nash was a lieutenant in the U.S. Air Force and one of Guile’s best friends. Although it was hinted that M.Bison was involved in Charlie’s disappearance in the past, it was never really fully explained…

nashfall

…Until the Street Fighter Alpha series, that is. In Street Fighter Alpha II (1996) we see firsthand that a helicopter controlled by M.Bison’s forces make quick work of Nash as M.Bison gets away. Initially presumed to be dead by both friends and foes alike, Nash’s return shows that his story is far from over.

While the mysteries surrounding his return will become clear later on, for now we’re pleased to announce that the originator of the Sonic Boom is back with quite a few new tricks that you can see in the photos below.

Sonicflipkick

Nash takes to the air and comes down toward the opponents with a sharp flip kick.

sonicgrab

Nash grabs the opponent and slams them to the ground before infusing their face with more force than he uses to throw a sonic boom.

sonickickground

Nash slices through the air with a sharp kick that knocks the opponent away!

What is Nash’s goal in SFV? You will have to wait and see.

It’s also worth noting that for the first time for a major console release, Capcom will be performing PS4 and PC online beta tests for Street Fighter V. More details, including timing on the beta program in Europe, will be revealed in the future so stay tuned for updates. Until then, SONIC BOOM!

Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor – The Bright Lord DLC launches this week

In Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor, players saw Celebrimbor’s memories of being dragged back to Mordor, forging the Rings of Power, stealing the One Ring itself, and raising an army to battle his greatest Nemesis, the Dark Lord Sauron.

Now players will have the chance to play these epic events, wield this power for themselves and learn the fate of Celebrimbor, the greatest Elven king of the Second Age and the Bright Lord of Mordor — thousands of years before he became the Wraith that denied Talion death.

When introducing The Bright Lord for Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor, the opportunity to tell such a significant story from the history of Middle-earth isn’t the sort of challenge we take lightly. With The Bright Lord, we didn’t hold back. Prepare for a new playable character in Celebrimbor (along with a Celebrimbor skin for all of your adventures), a new story campaign and missions culminating in an epic battle against the ultimate Nemesis, the Test of the Ring Challenge Mode, new powers for you to try out as you wield the One Ring, and Celebrimbor’s deadly bow skills.

We’d love to tell you more, but frankly, we just can’t bring ourselves to ruin the surprise. There’s a lot of amazing stuff in The Bright Lord that we’re very proud of, and we can’t wait for you to wield the power of The One for yourselves.

See you in Mordor!

Ninja Theory reveals who is creating Hellblade’s music

Hi all, Dominic Matthews here from Ninja Theory. Today we’re very happy to be announcing the musician that will be composing the soundtrack for our upcoming PlayStation 4 title Hellblade .

Music is such a powerful tool for driving emotion, more so than art, dialogue or plot. So it makes sense that it should be part of the creative process from the start. Like every other aspect of the game we wanted to find a style that felt interesting and different in Hellblade. The style of music says a lot about your game. A big orchestral score is probably the default choice for a lot of games and movies. It suggests a particular kind of product: the big Hollywood blockbuster experience. That is not what Hellblade is about.

Another obvious choice is to focus on the setting, which in our game is a clash of Celtic and Viking cultures. We felt that a traditional Celtic sound would put a cultural barrier between you and Senua and would make it harder for the player to embody her journey. As for the Viking side, who knows what music would have sounded like in 700AD Norway?

Rather than focusing on setting, the music should tell a story. Hellblade is about Senua’s melancholic journey into a strange land to fight a hellish clan of Vikings. Any number of style choices could tell that story. In the end it comes down to personal preference and practical reality. And we do like it dark.

When choosing a partner to create such an important part of the Hellblade experience, the musician had to be on the same page. You need a level of innate understanding that allows you both to push and explore beyond the basic needs. Ninja Theory and in particular Hellblade’s Creative Director, Tameem Antoniades, has this with Andy LePlegua.

In this new development diary video, the latest in our open development series, we explain how Andy became involved in Hellblade, the approach we’re taking to the creation of the game’s soundscape and also give you a first listen to some of Hellblade’s music.

For now, we’ll get back to creating the best game experience we can. We’re hard at work putting together a section of the game for the first Hellblade gameplay reveal. You can follow the Hellblade journey and let us know what you think of development so far by following us on Twitter, Facebook and at www.hellblade.com.

Axiom Verge hits PS4 on 1st April; new power-ups detailed

Hey everyone – this is Tom Happ, the sole developer of Axiom Verge. About a month ago, I was given the opportunity to come to PlayStation Blog and describe the dedicated Speed Run mode feature of Axiom Verge. I was absolutely thrilled with everyone’s response.

If you aren’t familiar with Axiom Verge, please check out my initial PS Blog post about the game. The tl;dr version is that you play as Trace, a scientist who wakes up after a lab accident in a hostile, alien world. You need to uncover the mystery of how that world came to the state it’s in and your role in it all. Similar to classic games like Super Metroid, Contra, Blaster Master and others, the gameplay incorporates a mix of exploration, hidden powerups, strange creatures to fight, and epic boss battles.

Let’s talk power-ups!

Power-ups are the lifeblood of an exploration-based game. New abilities give you access to areas you couldn’t reach before and open up entire new sections of the game. They also open up lots of room for puzzles that can keep players challenged and thinking the entire way. It’s risky to talk too much about power-ups, though, since it’s definitely possible to spoil some of the surprises along the way. So for now, I’m just going to focus on the first few power-ups that you’ll find to give you a feel for the game.

The first one you’ll get is a new weapon called Nova. Unlike the first basic weapon you start out with, the Nova can be shot in two different ways. The basic way is just to shoot it like a normal weapon. It has a larger size, so you’re more likely to hit your target. But it’s slow. The second way is to detonate it while it’s in mid-air, making it split into six pieces. You can use this effectively to shoot at targets where you don’t have a direct line of sight.

Second is the drill. When you first get the drill (after defeating the first boss), you’re in a room where there are rocks blocking your path. This is to show players how and when to use the drill. Later on, though, I made sure to teach players that it’s not only rocks that you can drill through. Some other materials can also be drilled through. The more diligently you explore the world, the more likely you will be to find health upgrades and new weapons.

Later on, you’ll discover the address disruptor. I came up with this idea from the days of my youth playing with things like Game Genie or just finding glitches that weren’t originally intended to be in the game. I found it fascinating to uncover areas that I was never intended to see and corrupt different elements of the game to see how they would behave.

I wanted to replicate this feeling of discovery by creating a sort of glitch ray that would corrupt the reality around you. Every enemy can be glitched, and they all respond in different ways. This opens up a lot of new puzzle ideas for people to explore by glitching every enemy to see what it does.

Some of this has been seen before in some of the sneak previews I gave out to press over the last few months, so I’ll give you a sneak peek at one power-up that I don’t think I’ve shown to anyone yet. Without any further explanation…

I’m so tempted to talk about more of the power-ups, but I really want everyone to discover them on their own!

And now for the biggest news of all: the PS4 version of Axiom Verge is ready!

It’s done! It’s through certification, has all of its age rating stuff done, has been localised into six languages (English, French, Italian, German, Spanish, and Brazilian Portuguese), and poked and prodded by multiple playtesters. Technically, you could play Axiom Verge today.

As we speak, review codes are being prepped to be sent out to media outlets and journalists so they will have plenty of time to write up thorough reviews. I feel this is an extremely important part of the process. There’s a lot of content in Axiom Verge and I want to make sure reviewers have plenty of time to play through the entire game and savour the full experience. I’m personally really proud of what I’ve been able to accomplish as a solo dev, so my emotions run the gamut between excitement about letting the rest of the world check it out, and anxiety over letting my baby take its first steps in the wild.

Although the PS4 version is ready, I’m still working on the PS Vita version as there are some tools that are still under development that I’m waiting on. However, when Sony asked me when I wanted to release Axiom Verge, I had a tough decision to make. Should I hold the PS4 version so I can launch it simultaneously with the PS Vita version? Or should I just launch the PS4 version now?

After hearing from so many people who are eagerly looking forward to playing it, I decided just to launch the PS4 version first. But people who are mostly interested in the PS Vita version should not worry. It’s definitely coming, and it’s definitely going to be cross-buy, so if you buy it on PS4, it will be ready for download on your Vita as soon as it launches there.

So with that caveat out of the way, I am a little freaked out to announce that Axiom Verge will be available for download on PS4 on 1st April for €17.99!

It’s been the greatest experience of my professional life creating this game. I really hope you enjoy it even half us much as I enjoyed making it. Thank you for your support.

FutureGrind is coming soon to PS4

Hi, we’re Owen Goss and Matt Rix, and together we are Milkbag Games, the two-person team making FutureGrind. We are extremely excited to announce that FutureGrind will be coming to PS4!

16377550150_1b910b79a0_o

FutureGrind is a game all about skill, tricks and speed. We think it’s a bit like Uniracers meets OlliOlli. The game is played on a track made of rails that run through a 3D environment: some rails are blue, some are red, and some are white.

As the player, you control a futuristic, motorcycle-sized vehicle called a “grinder”. Your grinder has two wheels: one blue, and one red. You have to get from the start of the track to the end in one piece, while scoring the most points possible.

Be careful: do NOT let the wrong wheel touch. Your blue wheel can touch blue rails, your red wheel can touch red rails, but touch the wrong rail and you’ll cause a short circuit. Watch out, short circuiting leads to, well, a bit of a mess.

FutureGrind png

Survival is important in FutureGrind, but it’s really just the baseline. In order to succeed, you’ll need to get good at doing chains of tricks. Points are awarded to you based on how you grind on the rails. Balance on top of a rail for a Manual. Boost up into the bottom of a rail for an Undergrind. Dangle from the top of a rail for a Hanger, and so on. Rack up long grinds to increase your score. Do flips in the air for big points. Transfer between rails flawlessly to build your chain multiplier. Only skilled players will earn endorsements from The Sponsors and progress through the game.

Did I mention that the talented musician bignic is writing a complete, original soundtrack for FutureGrind?! Because he is, and it’s amazing. One of the songs is in the teaser video above, but if you want to hear more, head over to his Bandcamp page and check out the 4-track EP of FutureGrind music he just put up. It’s good stuff.

We’re really excited to bring this game to PlayStation! We’ve made great progress on the game so far, but there’s still a lot of work to do. We’ve got a bunch of different environments planned, all with multiple tracks in them, as well as new grinders and all the bits and pieces that tie everything together into a finished game. Keep your eyes on PlayStation Blog and FutureGrind.net for more news about the game. We hope that you’ve enjoyed what we’ve shown today!
