Meet the deadly cast of Suda51’s new PS4 action game, Let It Die

As we approach the inevitable catastrophe known only as the “Earth Rage,” it’s time we formally meet some of the deadly denizens who will inhabit our post-civilization world and assist (or murder) you on your way up the Tower of Barbs.

The world of Let It Die is home to quite a colourful cast of characters. Seemingly ripped from the pages of a gritty, pulp comic, yet infused with a kitschy “pop” aesthetic, these characters manage to be eccentric, eclectic, and sometimes even helpful!

Uncle Death

Uncle Death (voiced by Jukka Hilden) is the first major character you will encounter on your adventure. This arcade-dwelling, skateboarding-slash-golf enthusiast literally brings you into the world as he introduces you to his favorite game ever. Luckily, he also sticks around to act as your personal guide and cheerleader. Providing a helpful reference book, some basic tips, and colour commentary on your most brutal kills, Uncle Death is never too far from the action.

He’s blunt, but also quick to compliment those who earn it. As a personal quirk, he insists on calling you “senpai” (a Japanese term of respect typically reserved for upperclassmen or those with more seniority) despite being about 1,000 years your elder. Don’t let his appearance fool you, this reaper is anything but grim. At times, he can be downright wacky, but he does seem to enjoy this violent chaos a little too much…

Let It Die

Kiwako Seto

Kiwako Seto (Daveigh Chase) is the newest recruit at the most successful (presumably only) post-apocalyptic insurance company in town, Direct Hell. Despite the death and destruction around her, Kiwako is quite skilled at her job and manages to maintain composure despite her surroundings.

She does tend to get a bit too excited upon witnessing what she considers to be a “GRUESOMAZING” death, but she never lets that stop her from politely offering her company’s standard insurance policy. You know, the one that brings you back from the dead. It’s the best seller, naturally.

When she’s not busy working, Kiwako enjoys riding around on her signature scooter, the Yotsuyama Sick TNG, and posting new (likely gruesome) photos to her Pinstagram account, @kiwa.v_v.kiwa.

Let It Die

The Jackals

The Tower of Barbs can be a pretty messy place, especially with all the death and destruction players leave behind in their wake. Luckily, The Jackals are there to clean it up and look classy doing it.

Former criminals and former champions of a top secret martial arts championship, they were hand-picked by the mysterious Yotsuyama Group. As part of their “cleaning” duties, they are required to collect dead fighters. Highly-leveled fighters command a pretty hefty price, so their corpses (and remaining equipment) could be quite the desirable commodity for would-be scavengers.

The Jackals are armed with equipment far superior to just about anything a player might come across in the tower, so interrupt their work at your own peril!

Jackal X (Verne Troyer) is a former gangster and violent brute. Short tempered and possessing the skill to back it up, his beam saber will make quick work of those foolish enough to bother him.

Y (Mark Rolston) is a former hitman and all around “cool guy.” He favors the more elegant beam gun when it’s time to dispatch his foes.

Z (Traci Lords) is the only female in the group, and her past is shrouded in mystery. Though, perhaps her biggest mystery is how she obtained such an insane level of skill with her complicated-yet-deadly beam yo-yo!

Let It Die

And with that, we have finally met a few of the charming characters players will encounter in Let It Die. This colourful cast is brought to life with Grasshopper’s signature style and even more incredible voice acting talent such as: Steve Blum, Matt Mercer, Patrick Seitz, Fred Tatasciore, Laraine Newman, Billy Dee Williams and Mark Hamill.

Let It Die will be free-to-play and is coming soon exclusively to the PS4. We hope you’ll stay tuned for more news and info about the latest installment of chaos brought to you by Grasshopper Manufacture and GungHo Online Entertainment.

How PS4 Pro enhances Ratchet & Clank

Hey everyone. Ratchet & Clank on PS4 marked the first appearance of our long-running heroes on the console. It’s a galactic space adventure-filled with exotic planets, wild villains, and an arsenal not fit for this world.

We’re pleased to be rolling out a free software update to the game to support the additional power that PS4 Pro offers. This patch should be available on or prior to the launch date of PS4 Pro.

Ratchet and Clank

For users with a 4K TV, you’ll be able to play Ratchet & Clank at a much higher resolution, and if your TV supports it, in HDR using an HDMI 2.0 cable. PS4 Pro users with a 1080p TV will see a big increase in gameplay image quality as well.

The technique we’re using to get to those better resolutions is something we’re calling Temporal Injection. This allows us to not only hit a much higher resolution, but also to do it with jaggie-eliminating anti-aliasing as well. The extra resolution and HDR’s ability to display even more of the colorful Solana Galaxy should combine for the best image quality you’ve ever seen in a Ratchet & Clank game.

We’re really excited about the potential of the PS4 Pro and what it means for our games. From Ratchet & Clank to our upcoming game with Marvel Entertainment, Spider-Man (working title), PS4 Pro gives us the power to release our best-looking games ever.

And for those with an HDR-enabled TV but still using a regular PS4 or PS4 Slim, our patch will also enable HDR for Ratchet & Clank as well.

We can’t wait for you to check out Ratchet & Clank on PS4 Pro!

How PS4 Pro will enhance Horizon Zero Dawn

Horizon Zero Dawn is an action RPG set in a lush post-post-apocalyptic open world in which humanity is no longer the dominant species. Machines, not mankind, rule the Earth.

We’re very excited about HDR, 4KTVs, and PS4 Pro in general, but to be clear, the game we demonstrated at the past two E3s was running on standard PS4 hardware. We’re dedicated to making a game that looks great regardless of the model it’s played on; it will look beautiful on PS4, and will look even better on PS4 Pro, particularly if you own an HDR-compatible 4KTV.

Horizon Zero Dawn

As we showed at the PlayStation 4 Pro reveal event last month in New York City, the extra power of the new hardware allows us to get even closer to our vision for a lush and vibrant living world. The extra detail in the natural environment and the enhanced colors really add to the experience.

We’ve used the PS4 Pro’s enhanced hardware to do some exciting things for Horizon Zero Dawn’s art style. For us, Horizon Zero Dawn is all about scope, scale and visual splendor. Though the game is technically post-apocalyptic (or perhaps more accurately, post-post apocalyptic) we wanted to create a vision of nature reclaiming the Earth. PS4 Pro’s power afforded us a number of interesting possibilities to expand this vision even further.

For starters, for players who still possess standard 1080p HDTVs, we’re able to offer far better image quality. We’ve got a number of techniques at our disposal. The most logical one is supersampling. This is a very high-quality anti-aliasing technique, which basically means we internally render at a higher resolution (close to 4K) before shrinking it down to the final 1080p resolution.

Horizon Zero DawnHorizon Zero Dawn

As our internal calculations are done at a resolution much higher than 1080p, more detail survives before we shrink it down to 1080p, resulting in smoother edges – virtually no jaggies – and a more stable image.

We’re also looking at enhancing the quality of our shadow maps and increasing the quality of our anisotropic filtering. This is a technique which increases the quality of texture sampling, resulting in more detailed environment textures. We still have to tweak these elements of the 1080p output quality for the final game, but we have quite a bit of power yet to play with.

In addition, Horizon Zero Dawn on PS4 Pro will fully support users with 4KTVs, outputting at a much higher resolution. We’re rendering 2160p checkerboard, which is a special technique that looks incredibly good on a 4K TV. You’re going to notice a ton of subtle details, from stitching on Aloy’s outfit, individual leafs and branches swaying in the wind, kilometers away in the distance and more detail in all machines and NPCs in the world.

Horizon Zero DawnHorizon Zero Dawn

Then there’s HDR, or high dynamic range, which is a brand-new feature that enhances the range of colours we can display. It’s very exciting and hard to explain, as it’s something which most people haven’t ever seen before, so they don’t know what to expect. You can’t print it, it’s not in cinemas, your phone’s screen can’t do it. The only thing that you can compare HDR with is reality.

We normally have to do a lot of work in the engine to take an internal high dynamic range image and then make it suitable to be displayed on a normal TV. A lot of colour fidelity gets lost in the process. If you own an HDR-enabled TV, we don’t have to lose that data and you’re looking at the image in its full glory, with brighter and deeper colours, more contrast and vibrancy, in its pristine state. The benefits are truly awesome.

For me as a developer, the most exciting thing about the PS4 Pro is that it provides a lot of extra processing power. It will be interesting to come up with different ways to put that additional horsepower to use – from finding more efficient ways to output at high resolution, to giving non-4K players more display options, and much more.
