A closer look at sci-fi romance adventure Alone With You

Hello once again, PlayStation fans! This is Benjamin Rivers, the developer behind horror game Home and the upcoming Alone With You — I wanted to share my answers to some common questions I get about the new game, as we charge ahead towards PlayStation Experience!

When can I play Alone With You?

Well, I mentioned in my last post that the game is now coming out for PS4 and PS Vita in spring 2016, but players itchin’ for some romance and sci-fi adventurin’ can get their hands on a demo at PlayStation Experience in San Francisco later this week. The demo will have two missions and two “date scenes” — you’ll see one of each per playthrough, so you might want to try it out twice.

Is this just a point-and-click adventure?

I actually get asked this quite a lot — Alone With You is definitely an adventure game, but not a ’90s-style one. It’s designed with controllers in mind, where moving around the environment feels fluid and fun. There are no complicated menus or inventory screens to manage (just like Home, which was also designed with minimalism in mind).

So, how does the gameplay work?

You accept missions from your AI companion, and as you reach your mission area, you explore. You don’t have a complex HUD, markers or anything getting in your way. If you stumble across something you can use, take or scan, the game prompts you. Unlike a lot of adventure games, you feel like you’re moving through a world, instead of pushing a cursor around.

Is there a lot of text?

Well, the game uses text (instead of voice acting) for its dialogue, sure, but you won’t ever be forced to read dozens of blocks of text while everything grinds to a halt. In fact, you’ll notice in screenshots that you can answer questions that your AI companion asks you with the Square, Triangle and Circle buttons — which frees up your analogue stick and your X button to do other things. Sometimes you can carry on a conversation even while walking around!

For the romance elements… well, let’s just get to that other question I get asked a lot:

Is this just another dating sim?

Some people see the word “romance” and worry this is going to be a goofy dating sim with a bunch of teenagers. But fear not! Alone With You is meant to use romance as one of its core elements, but in a pretty non-traditional way.

As you finish missions throughout the game, you’ll be prompted to visit one of the four key characters — Winnie, Pierre, Leslie and Jean — who are busy working in the holo-sim chamber, trying to help you succeed. These meetings aren’t strictly business, though — and depending on items you may discover, or choices you may make while on your missions, your dialogue options and the available topics of conversation may change.

You’ll spend time with all four characters, but your answers to your questions, as well as other choices you make during key scenes, will determine how they feel about you. Your time until you escape the doomed planet is finite, and you may be asked to make some tough decisions. And rather than the oft-used “visual novel” style, Alone With You’s romance scenes feel like little dynamic comic book chapters.

So who is this game even for, anyway?

Alone With You is for players who love narrative-focused games, and immersing themselves in a fictional world. The 2D art is bright and vivid, and we’re putting a lot of effort into telling little stories just in the backgrounds, as well as with the conversations you have and the puzzles you solve.

There’s a lot of backstory and lore that you can piece together, but you won’t get bogged down with it. If you love feeling like you’re in a real place, and enjoying understanding that world the more you explore it, Alone With You will be right up your alley.

Also, players who like having characters they can care about and interact with in meaningful ways will find something to enjoy here. Especially players who like the idea of romance in games, but think that other options might feel very similar. This game won’t talk down to you, so regardless of age or gender, you can still find someone to relate to here.

Puzzle adventure Xing: The Land Beyond arrives on PS4 next year

If you enjoy solving puzzles, going on adventures, exploring rich landscapes or piecing together stories, you might just like Xing: The Land Beyond.

In this first-person adventure game, you’re already dead. Your main objective in this afterlife is to figure out who you are and what you must ultimately do.

Imagine walking up to a gravestone, reading the inscription and then being transported through space and time to where a defining moment of that person’s life took place. The story is told through the environments you explore, the mysterious messages you encounter, and scattered poetry spoken in the voices of those long past.

For those of you who have been following our progress over the past three years, and those who just found out about us today, we have an exciting announcement! PlayStation has quietly been there for us dating back to our first year of development — and now we can proudly (and finally) say that Xing: The Land Beyond will be coming to PS4 in 2016!

Inspirations

When we travel to shows, we often get asked the question, “What was your inspiration for making this game?”

Puzzle games we admire like Portal and Myst are a large part of our design backbone, along with adventure games like Journey and the Zelda series. We use these games and many more as building blocks for our own ideas to grow.

Of course, games aren’t the only things that inspire us. Movies, TV shows, art, stories, and even pictures of interesting places on Google help feed our brains and give us new perspectives. If you’re interested in the specifics, check out our Development Blog.

On design

When building the game, we often take an experimental approach in order to understand what makes an immersive experience. If we all like an idea we will prototype it and test. This process allows us to not be afraid to try new things. It’s also the process that turned “lighting coconuts on fire and throwing them around” into a feature, and eventually, a core gameplay mechanic.

There are a variety of puzzle types integrated with the environments of each land you visit. On your journey, you will discover ways to control the environments themselves by controlling the elements like rain and snow.

Big project, small team

Based on our videos and screenshots of the game, people often contact us asking about our team size, or what company we outsource the art to. We can proudly say that Xing: The Land Beyond is solely the product of just three developers, using Unreal Engine 4 as our canvas. While it’s a huge undertaking, this game is our passion project: a labour of love, determination and commitment.

 

One benefit we have from being so small is the ability to cut an idea out of the game entirely the moment we realise it won’t work, or sharpen the focus of a story that might lack depth or clarity. In the same way, we can also add new content to the game if we decide it will help define the story or enhance the gameplay, and ultimately the player’s enjoyment.

It’s always exciting when we get to bring Xing: The Land Beyond to a new audience at trade shows and events. Despite being a single-player game, some of our favourite moments attending conventions have been watching friends and couples work together to collaborate and debate puzzle solutions.

Rocket League gets free Winter Games event next month

Winter is coming… to Rocket League! Starting 14th December, our previously-announced hockey-inspired Mutator Mode, now called “Snow Day,” will officially replace the “Mutator Mashup” online playlist.

Boasting an ice-themed field and a heavy, disc-shaped puck, “Snow Day” brings an awesome new twist to Rocket League’s classic, football-fueled gameplay. We know a lot of you have been waiting a long time to give this one a try, which is why we’re so pleased to finally confirm an official date for you!

Besides “Snow Day,” 14th December will also bring several new holiday-themed Garage items! Like October’s Halloween treats before them, the items from Rocket League’s “Winter Games” are limited-time goodies unlocked by simply playing matches (it doesn’t matter if you win or lose!). Though their chances of dropping are lower than a “standard” item’s, the “Winter Games” collection is also yours to keep once you’ve found them. Fail to get all the items before 4th January, however, and you’ll have to wait until next year to get them again!

Introducing Masquerada on PS4, an RPG of magic, dancing, and death

Having spent years playing Dungeons and Dragons, one thing always annoyed me: the power differential between spellcasters and the rest of the classes. As a DM, I had to figure out a way to have magic prominent without having my fighters and rogues stacking dice in the corner as a group of my goblins were being blown up by another fireball.

So, I took away the wizards and made magic something attainable by anyone who could get their hands on a mask. Players immediately began seeking out masks that enhanced their class abilities. Combat became a dance of steel and spells. And that, in turn, became the basis of what would become Masquerada.

Translating the tabletop experience to the screen would be a daunting task, but it was made far easier with the help of Nicholas Chan, our writer. He came up with the idea of using the arts as a kind of foci. Masks provide the raw power, but you need concentration to bend it to your will. Dance, song, and the focus of sports have translated well to how these mask users, these Masquerada, control their magic.

 
Sicarios, the assassins, dance around the battlefield, flinging spells from hand and foot. Pavisierres, the warriors, call power to their core like any good sportsman, before blasting it outwards. Last on the battlefield, are the Dirges — these men and women are best described as combat chaplains. While they fight with song and magic, their role on the battlefield is to record the deaths of their comrades. Morbid, sure, but we are creating a dangerous city, where death constantly creeps around the corner. All these abilities are tied together by the masks and their innate elemental abilities.

The team rallied around this core idea and gave it a spine with gameplay inspired by childhood favourites like Baldur’s Gate, Neverwinter Nights, and Dragon Age. Tactical Pause was the first thing we talked about. It gave our combat depth, and also the added bonus of allowing people to pace how they’d like to experience Masquerada.

Past that, we tinkered much with how the game would play in real time. Obviously, we wanted to retain what we loved in the classics, but we felt like there needed to be some updating with respect to what’s going on today. Looking at games like League of Legends, Smite, and Dota 2, we tried to distil what made them so simple yet engaging.

When compared to the classics, we figured that the problem lies with choice paralysis. A player who decisively and effectively uses a small set of skills trumps the player who wields a plethora of skills but doesn’t know what to use at critical moments. With five customisable skills per character across a party of three, the players have options, but will hopefully not be overwhelmed.

I think the biggest flak I’ve gotten so far stems from the decision to completely remove the inventory system and a traditional experience point system. I understand why people feel like these things are necessary to qualify the game as an RPG… but what if they really don’t add to the enjoyment of the experience? After some extensive tinkering, we decided to take out anything that doesn’t support the two main pillars of what we’re trying to achieve — good story, good combat.

 
Of story, I must speak of songs and how important they are. Songs are written for fallen Masquerada. Their hopes, dreams, and accomplishments. This is the only legacy left behind as Ombre is a city without gods, without religion… without an afterlife. This is the world Nick and I would like to introduce you to. One of power, intrigue, and death.

Turn-based sci-fi strategy game Tharsis hits PS4 in January 2016

It’s Thanksgiving Eve, which means all the boys and girls here in the USA will be waking up early tomorrow to open presents with all their loved ones. So, let’s focus instead on one of the most beautiful traditions of Thanksgiving Eve: announcing release dates for games. We’re beyond honoured that PlayStation has invited us to take part in this year’s festivities, and we’re excited to finally be able to tell you that Tharsis will be making its way to PS4 on 12th January.

For those just hearing about it, Tharsis is a turn-based strategy game about humanity’s first mission to Mars. It’s an important mission, and not just because of its potential to greatly increase our knowledge of the red planet. No, this mission is humanity’s attempt to locate the source of a mysterious signal emanating from the red planet.

To say more than that would spoil the fun, so hopefully that’s enough to pique your interest.

We started work on Tharsis more than two years ago, when it was nothing more than a physical prototype made with dice, paper, and lots of love. We spent a lot of time in this stage of development, taking time to ensure that we’d come up with a strategy game that was A) engaging on a mechanical level and B) unlike anything else on the market.

Once we felt we hit those marks, we got to work on taking the game from physical to digital. Much about the game has changed since those early days, but the core mechanics (dice rolling, dynamic “disaster” events, etc.) remained.

 
Developing Tharsis has been nothing short of a blast, but it’s also had its fair share of difficult times. As anyone making a board game — digital or otherwise — will tell you, the “balancing” phase of production can be a long one indeed. It’s a whole lot of trial and error, paired with a hearty dose of throwing things at the wall and seeing what sticks. But despite the difficulty of it, it’s something that deserves as much time and attention as possible.

Without proper balancing, players of Monopoly would be able to pass Go and collect $200 on their way to jail. Without proper balancing, the hippos of Hungry Hungry Hippos probably wouldn’t be so hungry. This is why we made the decision to take all the time we needed to get it right, and that just so happened to be two years, which is about how long it takes for Mars to orbit the Sun.

Coincidence? Completely, but still interesting.

There’s still a lot about Tharsis we haven’t discussed here. It’s a complex, systems-heavy game, and so we want to take our time with introducing you to what it’s all about. Tearaway Unfolded gets new DLC and free Dynamic Theme today

Hello adventurers! Tearaway Unfolded has been out in the wild for a few months now and we hope you are all enjoying your adventures with your papery friends! We’ve loved seeing all your photos and papercrafts flooding into tearaway.me - it’s been amazing to see all your unique stories unfolding.

Today we’ve got some exciting Tearaway Unfolded news to share with you all. We’ve been busy crafting some exclusive new goodies to get your hands on. First up, we have not one but TWO DLC packs coming your way!

So what’s inside these wonderful packs I hear you ask? Let’s unfold them and see…

Tearaway Unfolded Dynamic Theme: The Gopher Show!

Our first pack is free and contains four new avatars and a beautiful dynamic theme for your PS4. Upon opening the theme you’ll first be presented with the wintery Gibbet Hill landscape which beautifully changes from day to night.

But that’s not all! This theme has a surprise in store! Scroll down to expand the XMB menu and you’ll reveal a hidden stage show with the Gophers! This will be free and available to download on PlayStation Store from today!

Tearaway Unfolded Holiday DLC Pack!

This festive-tastic pack is filled with a wonderful array of costumes and decorations to adorn your Messenger with, just in time for the holidays!

Unwrap this yuletide gift and inside it you shall find four costumes for your Messenger which includes a jolly Santa, a frosty Snowman, a merry Elf and a friendly Reindeer! You’ll also receive seven new decorations including a Christmas tree, a Candy Cane, a Stocking, a delicious Christmas Pudding, a Holly Leaf with berries, an Ivy leaf, a beautiful Wreath and a Gift!

We also released our first SHAREfactory theme for Tearaway Unfolded last week! We are super excited to see what videos you creative folks start cutting together. If you missed our blog post last week, our SHAREfactory theme comes with the following:

Official Soundtrack

And finally, we recently released the incredible Tearaway Unfolded soundtrack on iTunes and PlayStation Store, which is available to download NOW. The soundtrack includes a staggering 50 tracks by award-winning composers Kenneth Young and Brian D’Oliveira, who have written over an hour of new music for Tearaway Unfolded.

We sat down with them recently to chat about the soundtrack and how they brought it from handheld to the console world…

“It was a real pleasure for us to revisit the world of Tearaway. Initially, we were a little nervous of living up to expectations [cough]Best Music BAFTA nomination[/cough], but once we got into the swing of things it was very much a case of picking up our collaboration from where we left off.

“Whilst we reworked and augmented some of the music to make it a better fit for the larger world in Unfolded, for the most part we were writing brand new material – there’s over an hour of new music in the game, which is actually kinda crazy, but it’s also a pretty good metric for understanding how different Tearaway Unfolded is on PlayStation 4 compared to Tearaway on PS Vita!

“The official soundtrack album for Tearaway Unfolded is a curated experience which represents the best of that music – almost two hours of infectious folk melodies, a unique blend and mash-up of styles and instrumentation, all perfectly fitting for Media Molecule’s trademark eclecticism.

“Now that it’s available on iTunes and PlayStation Store, we hope that fans will continue to enjoy breaking the fourth wall by bringing a little more of Tearaway Unfolded in to their worlds.”
